Background: The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected President and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Philippines attained their independence. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986, when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile and installed Corazon AQUINO as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel RAMOS was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph ESTRADA was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, in January 2001 after ESTRADA's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and widespread demonstrations led to his ouster. MACAPAGAL-ARROYO was elected to a six-year term in May 2004. The Philippine Government faces threats from armed communist insurgencies and from Muslim separatists in the south.

Last week, we went for another 6-hour bus ride to Bataraza, a town in southern Palawan. We took a walk into some bushes to visit lowlander tribes, as opposed to the highlander mountain tribes we visited last time. The culture is very similar to those tribes in the moutains, except that these people are mroe civilized. Clothes are normal, most of them can speak Tagalog and are either attending school or finished high school. It's mostly the customs and the values that are tribal, and the family system. Throughout our 3-day stay, us guys hauled logs down the hillside. These were [View Full Entry]

On Wednesday, I and the rest of the DTS crew when island hopping to Snake Island, about 1-hour bangka-ride off of Honda Bay. The island has it's name from the long winding sandbar jutting out of one side. We rented a few snorkels and swam above the coral reef, where we could see literally hundred of fish of all sorts of colors. If you feed them bread, they will it nibble it right out of your fingers. I have seen beneath the sea in pictures and in nature videos, but it doesn't compare to seeing it in real life. I took [View Full Entry]

Welcome!
Welcome!
A really warm welcome from all the staff at El Rio Y Mar
The night previous to travelling to Palawan the group went on another bender in Boracay, minus ourselves - either we are boring or sensible! We knew we had an eventful half day of boats, jeepnees and planes ahead, unbearable for some seeing the state they were in All went pretty smooth, apart from the having to unpack all our luggage on the runway due to our western body weights hitting the kg limit alone. Understandable when you look at the size of the plane! Finally we arrived at El Rio Y Mar. All bad thoughts of luggage arrival and hangovers were [View Full Entry]

There's not a whole lot that I could write about and grab any attention from this past week. It's been delightfully slow here. Last night we had a birthday cake and movie night for two of our aging residents. It was a fantastic hoot of a time. Anyways, on to more entertaining things... In exactly a week, I will beginning outreach phase. It's a vague term, yes, but I will try to describe it, at least what it will mean for me. First of all, we will be relocating to another part of Palawan for some time. Perhaps 2 weeks. Then [View Full Entry]

Tribal Outreach Asia » Philippines » Palawan
As part of DTS, we went for two weeks to an area of Palawan called Ransang, where we did minor outreach to tribes in the mountain. This is journal-ized description of those days. Saturday, Feb 02/08 We left the Santa Lourdes base at 3AM. I walked with half the group for about 45 minutes to the highway and more, until we got picked up by the multi-cab who took the first group to the bus stop. The bus ride was typical at first, but then got pretty bumpy as we approached more remote areas. These buses are built like army tanks. [View Full Entry]

Dinner?
Dinner?
Puerto Market
Well it’s bloggin time again…it’s not always the easiest thing to do, but since it’s the closest thing to responsibility I have right now...I really can't complain! After the last blog entry, we checked out the market in Puerto Princesa. Lots of colours and characters, and lots to take in. It’s always amazing to see “what’s for dinner.” Everyone loved showing off their catch, produce and products and tried their best to explain what it was to these two tourists! The next day we left Puerto Princesa and headed north to the small town of [View Full Entry]

The Island Province of the Philippines, Palawan. It never occurred to me that Palawan would be so beautiful. The Island just stretches for miles. The landscape is captivating and the ocean is unbelievably pristine. It's definitely worth a trip. The beach is amazing. The sky is so blue that it gives the entire area its glow. The marine life is so diverse and the surrounding emits a kind of unique solitude. This is how nature courted me to submission. [View Full Entry]

Giants in Palawan! Hello again to all our family, friends and blog trackers alike! No, there are no giants in Palawan (that we have seen yet?), but we did get to watch the Super Bowl this morning (7am, Monday) and got a good dose of North American sport... great game! As you probably have figured out, we are now on the island of Palawan on the far west coast of the Philippines with the South China Sea on the west and the Sulu Sea on the east. Some of you might remember "Survivor Palawan" from way back when, well we are [View Full Entry]

Pictures: Sabang & The Underground River 1 Sabang & The Underground River 2 Last weekend, as previously hoped, me and two others from the base went to the Underground River in Sabang. When we hopped off our tricycle to Brgy, we faced the option of riding the top of a jeepney or taking an air conditioned bus. Without a moment’s hesitation, I chose the natural A/C atop the jeepney. The others wanted the adventure too, so we climbed th [View Full Entry]

Pictures: The Croc Farm Last weekend, three others from the DTS and I went to the crocodile farm and animal reserve. It was not half bad, despite the fact that the crocs were not in the wild but rather secured within the cold confines of plastic tubs and concrete walls. Obviously, this is where an endangered animal had to be to saved from the obliteration of it’s race, but I didn’t really sense the viciousness I hoped I would. I like to experience things for what they are, and viewing ferocious animal [View Full Entry]
