The Miag-ao Church was built in 1786 by Spanish Augustinian missionaries and was declared as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Baroque Churches of the Philippines" in 1993. On the front facade, which is flanked by two watchtower belfries, one can see the unique blending of Spanish and native influences. The central feature of the bas-relief facade is a large coconut tree which reaches almost to the apex. While an integral part of the Philippine landscape, the coconut tree is also the subject of lore. According to an old Philippine legend, the coconut tree was t... read more

I stayed at Harolds Pension which is probably the best place I've stayed at in the Philippines and the cheapest after initially only going to say for three nights I changed my mind to five as there is loads to do here, including awesome diving at Apo Island and the worlds best muck diving. The first afternoon I had a walk around the town and the waterfront. Then the hostel was having a BBQ night so at 6pm they took us to the market to buy whatever we wanted I had some fresh tuna with egg plant and pumpkin. Then they seasoned it for us and cooked it, I ate too much but it was delicious. I met everyone else staying at the hostel and we spent the evening sat on the roof top restaurant ... read more

This year I headed to the Philippines for my week vacation. Many had suggested that I should visit the country since I got to Gwangju. It was a well-deserved week of relaxation. I arrived in a drizzly Manila at two in the morning. The metered taxi from the airport to the hotel took around 30 minutes. I only stayed in Manila one full day and two nights at the Leesons Residences Hotel in Malate. The whole time I was in the city it did not stop raining. I did very little sightseeing, starting first with a trip to the National Museum. Just outside of Intramuros, the museum exhibits wonderful historical, archaeological, and ethnographic material on the Philippines. After spending the morning in the museum, I made my way to Intramuros, the oldest district in the city, ... read more

The time came for us to finally leave Max and his lovely family. Max kindly dropped us off at the bus station where there was already a bus waiting to take us to our next destination. The bus didn’t have air con, but it had lots of open windows to let the breeze through. As we were pulling away from the station I noticed our bags were still laying on the ground. I had to stick my head out of the window and shout at the top of my voice before someone realised and stopped the bus to put them in the luggage compartment. It seems that leaving your luggage with the person in charge of loading the luggage was not good enough - we would have to be more careful in future. After a while ... read more

"Charming, sweet and refined" is how I would describe the city of Bacolod in Negros Occidental, Philippines. Like a genteel lady, Bacolod unwittingly seduces its visitors with attractions that evoke charm, good taste and generosity. It's no surprise then that it has won the hearts of those who have visited it (including mine). Pride of Heritage Foremost among Bacolod's charms is its colorful history and heritage. "The City that Sugar Built" was home to many men and women of privilege - individuals who were generously rewarded by the production and supply of sugar across the Philippine Islands. Well-preserved ancestral homes reflect both opulence and propriety as well as the ostentatiousness and vanity of the sugar barons and their families. Thus, visitors to Bacolod get to see period style houses that will pique the interest not only ... read more

We left Dumaguete and Harold helped us catch a bus heading for Sugar Beach. When we arrived at Sugar Beach with a boat and a small boy who was very angry that his brother made him sail us for a low price, we met some locals singing karaokee at the first part of the beach. They invited us in, but we were too tired and just wanted a place to stay. We found a really nice bungalow at Driftwood Village for 600 pesos. Nice, small and cozy place. A real Robinson feeling over the place, everything was made in bamboo and wood. We spend the next day in real Sugar Beach style. Lazy and not doing anything. We stayed by the beach in some hammocks, it was a really nice sunny day. We had lunch and ... read more

We got up at 4:45 which was really early for us, but we had to catch the ferry at 6. We were lucky to get a room at Harolds Mansion which is a very popular backpacker place there. We had to pay 500 pesos for a room, which included breakfast and 30 minutes of internet a day. We had some breakfast and packed out. After this we went to CENTROP ZOO. Here we were lucky to meet a guide - it was his day off, so he showed us around for free, I guess he didn't have anything to do. We only payed 10 pesos at the entrance. He was very proud of his job, he was in charge of the worms and rats which they used for feeding the animals, so he was breeding them ... read more

Our island hopping led us onto the island of Negros where the beautiful Sugar Beach is. We thought it would be a crime to visit the Philippines and not laze on one of the many gorgeous beaches that are here (this is how we justified yet another beach excursion for us!!). To get to Sugar Beach was a bit of an experience, we had to jump off the bus en route to Sipalay City and barter for a tricycle to the shore – from here we were guided by some kids to a river and one of them then rowed us across in a small paddle-boat! We were worrying that this might look a bit like child exploitation but we made sure they were tipped generously! From the other side of the river you walk around ... read more

Didn't hit the "PUBLISH" button till now. Thought we're too old to care, anyway. Just having fun. So here's the story Blame it on all that revelry. Such carefree celebration. I never had problems with drinking. Those bubbles are my friends. They liven up an otherwise dull night. Or day. Ahem. Whoever said you can't drink while the sun is out? Not. Just. A. Wedding. The solemnity of the wedding ceremony was highlighted by the groom's speech in the Ilonggo dialect. Whoever tutored him with that most charming speech taught this Swiss national truly well. It took a lot of effort to learn the dialect , but while it was not his native tongue, the groom certainly professed his love straight from the heart. The formalities over, the wedding reception among family and friends was more ... read more
