Published: July 22nd 2008Asia » Philippines » Luzon » Metro Manila » Makati CityWARNING!! You will notice that there some grammar, tense and spellings that are incorrect, those were intentional for your enjoynment. thanks , rex Hi. Here's some photos, stories and advice from our trip to the Philippines. It was really a humbly experienced going back to the Philippines. To have a church family there was the best part of our trip. And to see how solid the brotherhood of the barkadas in Happy Valley Homes1, it really showed, no matter how long or far you've been, it still the same walk, laughter, jokes and kindness to each other. Once again, I'm thankful for Kuya dann and Ate Rose for treating us like their own brother and sisters. My wife Aileen was very impress with their generosities and hospitalities. I will never forget our first trip to subic, the ... read more
On the Road in the Philippines
Published: April 2nd 2008Asia » Philippines » Luzon » Metro Manila » Makati CityI have spent a long time in the road in the Philippines. 3 hours a day, back and forth to the office. I have read so many Filipino billboards and signs that I am starting to learn Tagalog words and am even starting to get jokes that make reference to local advertising campaigns. There are only a few highways here, and the rest of the time you are driving through little villages, and farmland, and would-be suburbia. So, it can be slow.going, and yet it is pretty entertaining. The first 45 minute is highway driving out of Manila, and then it's small towns in Cavite, always crossing bridges across huge gaps with tiny rivers at the bottom. There is a constant scene going on outside. Little kids playing hide and go seek, girls walking home from ... read more
Day Seven- Maybe the worst day of my life
Published: December 27th 2007Asia » Philippines » Luzon » Metro Manila » Makati CityAn Extreme Low Point In My Life Finally we get to go home!! We woke up early (5 AM ish) and checked out. The front desk attendant was sleeping in a chair and we had to ring the bell to wake her. I still wasnt feeling well and sipped some water before I left. When we got to the airport we had to wait in so many lines. I started to get REALLY sick. I finally asked a guard where a bathroom was and I almost blacked out trying to find it. Everything got all fuzzy. I threw up in my mouth and finally made it to the BR. I was scared because the BR wasn't really convenioent to get to and dad was waiting in line (one of many) to check in. I had ... read more
Day Six- The Wedding
Published: December 27th 2007Asia » Philippines » Luzon » Metro Manila » Makati CityA very long day Phill made eggs with mackerel over rice for breakfast. I'm getting tired of "things on rice" for every meal. We all got ready to go to the temple. Phill looked so good in his suit. We went over to Chona's and she was still getting ready so she scurried upstairs. The man we hired with the van was late but we got to the temple alright. They all went in and I waited. I walked around a bit but didn't really feel well. I think the food finally caught up to me. I waited in the temple annex. It is a building next to the temple with a large waiting room, offices, bathrooms, and an eating area. I was still tired so I took a bitty nap. When they were done ... read more
Day Five- Fort Santiago
Published: December 27th 2007Asia » Philippines » Luzon » Metro Manila » Makati CityThe Walled City Phill and chona went to order the cake. They are getting married tomorrow. They are getting one with their faces airbrushed on it. Ithink it is funny. We got a taxi to take us back to the country affair store. Inside of the store is another little store called the CTR store. It is owned by a member of our church and sells church related handicrafts. Yesterday we didn't have cash so we went back today. My father purchased a liahona and a creche set carved out of wood. He also bought be a case for my scriptures, it is royal blue with gold thread elephants it is beautiful. We got another taxi to take us to the old walled part of the city. It took forever because traffic is so bad. ... read more
Day Four-Bad Traffic
Published: December 27th 2007Asia » Philippines » Luzon » Metro Manila » Makati CityWith Christmas getting closer traffic is getting worse I forgot = Last night when we were watching TV a random chubby little girl without a shirt on appeared out of no where. She saw that they had visitors and was suddenly embarrassed about being half naked and covered her little chest with her hands. When one of the little boys came down she flashed them and laughed. She was really cute and funny and didn't listen to a word anyone said. She had to have been four or five years old. This morning we had pancakes and bananas for breakfast. Phill bought the bananas from a street vendor. Phill speaks a language called Illongo but is pretty good at picking up Tagolog. The bananas here have a much more complex flavor and are more yellow. It ... read more
More Wedding Preperations Like I thought both dad and I woke up early. It is about 5:30 AM, Manila time. We are sitting in the next room reading and writting because phill is still asleep. People outside are starting to stir again and come to life. Metro Manila is a bunch of cities all around the actual city manila. It is the commercial heart of the country. Everyone comes here to work or go to school. Apparently it is very expensive though. I'm guessing not unlike New York City. It is now light outside and I can hear roosters crowing in the middle of this huge city. Someone is also playing shania twain. The linoleum in Phill's apt is colored to look like carpet. Now someone is blasting UB40's Red Red Wine. I like this song. ... read more
Day Two- Sunday in The Philippines
Published: December 27th 2007Asia » Philippines » Luzon » Metro Manila » Makati CityDay Two "Change yourself, change your fortune." I woke up to my noisy father sighing and making wierd old man noises. He is a strange man. Chona and her mother brought over breakfast. It was fried eggs, fried rice and a sort of hot dog thing. We also had bread. It ws really great. I think it is like camping, anything tastes better when you are hungry. The shower felt so good. It took some configuring to make sure didin't get my clothes wet but it was fine. Chona got us a taxi to get to church which is pretty normal here. Not a lot of people have cars, but we've noticed the ones who do usually have pretty nice ones. Chona's sister has one but there wasn't enough room for all of us in ... read more
The Journey Begins
Published: December 26th 2007Asia » Philippines » Luzon » Metro Manila » Makati CityMy Journey to the Philippines: Day One 12/14/07 Start: Spokane Washington Dad arrived last night. We are both excited and a bit nervous. Sondra Hildreth (a girl from church) was a sweetheart and gave us a ride to the airport at 5:30 AM. I like using my passport, it makes me feel important. We are now on the plane to Portland, Oregon waiting on the runway for the engine to warm up. No joke. I snowed last night in Spokane. It will be an interesting change in weather by the end of the day. We are flying thus: Spokane to Portland to Tokyo, Japan, to Manilla Philippines. there are two layovers about three hours long. Dad says the flight from Portland to Japan is only about ten hours long. Which is a relief I thought it ... read more
Finally in the Philippines It is so beautiful here in a National Geographic way. I love soaking it all in. Reading travel books seems so hollow now. There are so many people everywhere. People drive like they line up. If you aren't cheating you aren't trying hard enough is like their national motto. It is hard to express in words what it is like. In the states you would say Phill lives in the Ghetto. It is pretty normal here though. All the apartments are stacked together. There are always people everywhere, cars everywhere. It was dark when we got to Phill's apartment so we couldn't see much. My little brother Phillip served a mission for our church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, for two years in the Philippines. Right before he ... read more
