I've learned a lot of Naval history on this tour... names of ships especially. I took the opportunity to go to Mt. Samat, a 90 meter cross shrine on top of the mountain, dedicated to the memory of those lost in the Bataan Death March. I had heard of the Bataan death march but never read the history. In case you haven't, here is a summary. World War II The Bataan Death March began as a plea for life. Men were tired, weak, lacking food and the 70-mile march from Mariveles (on the tip of Bataan) to San Fernando was a trial that tested a man, broke him, or got him killed. On April 9, 1942, American and Filipino troops on the Bataan Peninsula on West Luzon Island in the Philippines decided that they would not ... read more

Brian and I were given the amazing opportunity to stay with a family for a week in small town Philippines. Our friend and co-worker here in Taiwan, Kristina is a Filipina Canadian who hadn’t been back to her home country for seventeen years. So when we were given a week off from school, her and her husband decided it was time to go back to the homeland. And in some very fortunate circumstances, they deemed Brian and me worthy to spend that week with them. We stayed in the Bataan peninsula, infamous for the WWII Bataan Death March. The peninsula is on the Philippines’ big island, which has very few tourist attractions and the peninsula itself has nearly none. In fact, when I tried looking for a one night getaway hotel at a beach in the ... read more

SIEP Leaps 2 at Water Front Morong Bataan This is one of the unforgettable trip that I had. June of 2008, SIEP marks its 2nd year anniversary. All was set, and it's rain or shine. Yeah right... make that with or with out Super Typhoon.. Go as it was planned!!! That's the spirit... so there we were, 30 people all in all. Due to budget constraints, we went there thru rented PUJ (in fairness, Aircon nman). Morong Bataan is 4 hrs away from Manila. We passed thru NLEX, and had 2 major stop over beacause of flat tire. (Lucky stars are not our side during that day). As a frequent user of NLEX, I think it will be very much faster if you'll pass through SCTEX (though tolls will not be budget friendly). Amidst of Supertyphoon ... read more

This beats many a collector's dream. I am not sure whether to thank the collector, to envy him, or what. We accepted a friend's invitation to spend the weekend in Pilar, Bataan and prepared ourselves for a somewhat dull weekend visiting the local market, Mt. Samat War Memorial Shrine in Pilar, Bataan, and enjoying fresh fruits in season. "Ciudad de Acuzar" was not part of our itinerary. Neither have we even heard of this heritage town where the owner's collections included many historical turn of the century houses, town hall, school and chapel! Just 3 hours north from Manila The drive northwest of Manila via an expressway and paved roads took more than 3 hours. Pilar is a sleepy town in Bataan. Right beside a ricefield with a view of Mt. Samat, our host's house promised ... read more

John Thomas Lynch, my grandfather, has been an enigma to me all my life, not only because he is the man I was named for yet never had the opportunity to meet, but because no one besides my Uncle Kevin ever had a conversation with him about his war experiences. It’s hard to write this particular blog without going into too much history about the U.S. military campaign in the Philippines, mainly involving their strategic withdrawal from Manila to the Bataan peninsula and the island of Corregidor and subsequent surrender of all U.S. & Filipino forces in the Philipines to the Imperial Army of Japan, but I’ll attempt to make it brief. I’ve heard the stories since I was a small boy about my grandfather’s role in WWII and despite all the papers and essays I’ve ... read more

One thing you will notice very quickly about the Philippines is the importance of correctly and respectfully addressing others. An older sister is called Ate (“AHH-tay”) and an older brother Kuya (“KOO-yuh”) - these are terms also used as an appropriate address for your friends or office mates. And when Ate and Kuya don’t seem to be formal enough, a polite “Sir” or “Ma’am” seems to be the answer. So I was fortunate to spend almost a week living with my Ate Rona, a social worker at the Provincial DSWD office. Rona lives in the city of Balanga, one of the 11 municipalities served by the provincial office, and is the former Center Manager of one of the SCALA Centers that was set up last summer. The purpose of my visit to Balanga was to absorb ... read more

after searching for so many blog sites and got "blog lag", i came back to where i started blogging in. wheeww! this site makes me feel more comfortable. last year, i had a northern exposure of luzon. lucky me i have to be there because -- my job calls. though i enjoyed the 12-15 hours journey across the valley and searching for the high seas, i had had this regret about my memoirs last year. and everybody knows that nothing beats the first time, the feeling of awe and "wow" :O the sad part is -- the experience was never, never put on a journal like this! i have lots of pictures, lots of videos but my reflections about everything that the lord allows us to see and feel, i believe must be treasured on a ... read more
