The separation in 1947 of British India into the Muslim state of Pakistan (with two sections West and East) and largely Hindu India was never satisfactorily resolved, and India and Pakistan have fought two wars - in 1947-48 and 1965 - over the disputed Kashmir territory. A third war between these countries in 1971 - in which India capitalized on Islamabad's marginalization of Bengalis in Pakistani politics - resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. In response to Indian nuclear weapons testing, Pakistan conducted its own tests in 1998. The dispute over the state of Kashmir is ongoing, but recent discussions and confidence-building measures may be a start toward lessened tensions. To be updated

A wildness about Pakistan is evident in the name of the regions over which the government has teetering control. Provinces such as Sindh and Balochistan may be one thing. But when added to the likes of the more lawless sounding Northwest Frontier Province, you’d expect scenes out of the Wild West. In many cases, that’s exactly what takes place! My favorite region of Pakistan by title alone is the Northern Areas, leaving the foreigner with the impression that its inhabitants are a part of the nation when it suits them, but do not wholly buy into Pakistani integration. I met t [View Full Entry]

Hello Pakistan. I haven't taken all the photos I've wanted to. Some people are very sensitive about cameras here and I am also sensitive about taking pictures. Thus, this is only the tiniest visual slice of things happening. Nonetheless, enjoy. [View Full Entry]

From the border until mid afternoon in downtown Lahore, I had not grabbed much to eat. By two o’clock I sought anywhere in the downtown area with a functioning generator and preferably with a chilled dining area to offset temperatures over one hundred degrees. Within the first three minutes of scanning for an eatery on Regal Chowk I confirmed (by my own standards) that Lahore was truly the cultural capital of Pakistan. I saw the sign behind a row of trees across the median-divided boulevard. The letters were on the standard yellow background inside a brown oval. I followed each one [View Full Entry]

The halfway point of my time on the Subcontinent is the first reminder of my journey’s mortality. No longer is it acceptable to extend stays a night or two in a given village or hill town without earnestly pondering how my limited remaining time will be spent. The days now dwindle downward to a finishing point. As I sit on the apex of my travels, I am at once rejuvenated under the realization that time is not limitless and that there is much left to do and to accomplish. From this day forward when each day passes, I will look back [View Full Entry]

Hunza Valley Asia » Pakistan
It's Tuesday evening and we are back in China (Tashkurgan) after several days in Pakistan Hunza Valley -- mostly with limited or no Internet. Pakistan was wonderful -- amazing to see the mountains, and experience the grandeur of the Himilayas and the greater than 7500 meter peaks here. We did our own climb yesterday -- 500 meters, rugged and scrambling, to a place called Eagle's Nest. It was beautiful. David was terrific; an excellent hiker and climber -- except he was a bit nasty complaining that his grandpa was too slow (both up and down). We had some excellent meals in [View Full Entry]

Guns. Many guns. Asia » Pakistan » Northern Areas
So after trekking over the Pakora Pass, we spent about 4 days living with a family from Pakora, recovering from the rigours of walking. Unfortunately that meant that only 7 days were left until the polo tournament started. The idea of walking all the way to Shandur therefore went out of the window, and was instead replaced with "well, let's just see how far we get, and then get on a bus when we run out of time." So freed from major time constraints, another trek was found - this time the 5 day walk over Punji Pass - another 4700 [View Full Entry]

Shandur or bust Asia » Pakistan » Northern Areas » Gilgit
So sitting in Karimabad it's easy to start dreaming about the world of adventures that awaits in Pakistan. Getting off your arse to actually do them is, however, a different story. K'bad is just such a nice place and the people are so great that you just never want to leave. Nonetheless, over an evening of Hunza Water (the local alcohol of choice, made from Mulberries) and locally picked medicinal herbs (cunningly made into a lovely green custard - see photo) a plan was hatched that would see a group of us attempt to walk the 220km or so from Gilgit [View Full Entry]
