March 14 - March 17 Up early and at the airport- bit chilly, no fog- a good thing for flights. It is a total bun fight at the airport, people and bags everywhere but it all gets sorted out and we are through to the waiting area. It is really nice to see so many familiar faces- the French from Angle are there, the German doctor and dentist are there, the Germans from Namche.... even the Korean guy on the horse from yesterday morning (horse is nowhere to be seen), it's pretty sociable. First plane comes in at 0710 then 3 more planes in quick succession, they all fly off again bar 1. Apparently it is foggy in Kathmandu so we're all running a bit late. I find it pretty exciting watching these little planes coming ... read more

Tara Air Flight 113 sped down the runway, for what seemed a very long time, until the nose of the plane dipped upwards and then we were airborne. It didn’t take long to climb up into the sky and my nervousness dissipated as we put distance between us and Kathmandu airport. The view from my window seat was pretty impressive, especially as we travelled over the Kathmandu valley and could see the low clouds below. I caught glimpses of snow covered peaks out of the left hand side of the plane when those passengers were charitable enough to sit back for a few moments. We levelled off after around 25 minutes into the flight and this brought spectacular views of the scenery ahead from the pilot’s cockpit windows. It was impressive seeing the distance hills approaching, ... read more

... says one of a group of beaming children in this poor but tranquil farming area - their joy palpable, their enthusiasm infectious. A simple greeting, but a complex flow of thoughts and emotions ensue. Their words carry not a hint of judgement of, nor expectation from, this person who has come so far, from a land and life they can hardly imagine, and almost certainly never visit. I cannot know what I may have brought to their lives, more than a smile in kind - but they have given me something impossible to quantify: a ray of hope. And ... Nepal IS an impossible land: an impossible richness of natural wonderment juxtaposed against the impossible chaos that is Kathmandu, with its impossibly overloaded busses and the impossible burdens carried on the backs of women (a ... read more

After landing in Kathmandu we boarded a bus to take us to the terminal at the airport. The terminal was 100 feet away. Immigration was a bit of a gong show and I managed to lose one of my forms …well … technically, Nepalese immigration lost it, but one doesn’t argue these kinds of things. When we walked into the baggage area we were absolutely delighted, delighted, that sitting in the middle of the floor were big blue and red bike boxes. Hallelujah! We arrived at the hotel and headed for a quick walk to Thamel, the tourist district. We built up our bikes and one of the doormen from the hotel was very interested and wanted to help. He also wanted to know how much the bike cost. This becomes a recurring theme throughout the ... read more

22/10 to 29/10: Kathmandu and around Dhulikhel We arrived in Katmandu during the Dasain Festival - one of the biggest festival in Nepal. Celebrating the victory of the goddess Durga over the devil forces, they sacrifice a goat or a buffalo in her honour. They install swings at the entrance of villages and people will have a Tika on their forhead. Nepalese people were travelling back to their family home therefore shops were closed and not so many people in the streets. Streets have no tarmac and are very dusty but it was still nice to wander around. A good place for shopping if one need any trekking gear from The North Face, etc - fake of course ! but still ok quality. The architecture of the buildings is interesting and typical Newari Style: carved wood ... read more

When I was 15, I joined a group of bright and highly driven high school students in Washington, D.C. to attend Close Up, a program designed to give the upcoming generation an inside look at its government in action. For those of you who didn’t know me at that age, let me tell you a little about myself. I was basically a nerd. Not a typical nerd, I didn’t wear thick spectacles and I knew how to act in social situations, but I loved to learn. I loved to be by myself, to read and do my homework. And I loved to be right. Correspondingly, I loved to argue and to put myself into situations where I could demonstrate just how right I was. And if I was proven wrong (or if the right combination of ... read more

Hello All It's now monday after work on the second week of building. We have two sites where we are extending existing buildings, the walls are stone and clay mud, taken directly from the earth right next to the house so we are a model of resourcfulness. The only set back is the water, being the end of the dry season they are in very short supply, and the watering holes are a fair old trek to get too. Also there is not a scerik of natural flat ground! The people here are hopelessly friendly and welcoming. we are getting to know our home partners very well, and spent the last friday afternoon dancing on the site. The food is amazing, and the scenery pushes the boundaries of my vocabulary. Our weekend was spent l looking ... read more

Why being connected? Why are beings connected in general? Some people say that all the misunderstandig is due to lack of awareness which directly results into a lack of love. (or maybe it already starts with lack of love) But what does it mean, love, awareness? Have you ever heard your heart beating in a way that the whole universe could rest and find shelter there. If you can do that 24 h per day then you are a buddha, some people say. Human and non human beings being connected... Lets give up our fearful concepts of life. There is no need to have concepts anyway...... read more
