Wednesday 2-16 to Saturday 2-19 (Continued) But onto Kathmandu! Armed with Lonely Planet, we headed out to explore the city and its open markets, hidden temples and colorful shop fronts. The most impressive places to visit were the various Durbar Squares. Hundreds of years ago, Kathmandu Valley was split into three small kingdoms: Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan (all World Heritage Sites). Each kingdom had a central palace surrounded by temples and markets, known as durbar squares. These ancient cities were beautiful, with ornately carved temples covered in hand crafted metal works and stone carvings of both Buddhist and Hindu figures. More than any other place we’ve visited so far, Nepal has been a fluid blend of Buddhism and Hinduism, which amazes me because Western religions pride themselves on being different and separate one from the other. ... read more

Buddha was born in Nepal. Or rather Siddhartha Gautama, who would become Buddha, was born in Lumbini, which is now included in Nepal (but such a country as Nepal did not exist in the Buddha's time). It should not be surprising, then, that Buddhism is an important part of Nepal's religious landscape, despite there being a significant Hindu majority. Apparently, something like 80% of Nepalis identify as Hindu, while only 10% identify as Buddhist. However, these percentages don't clearly tell the story. For one thing, it obscures just how pervasive Buddhism is in the country. There are Buddhist stupas everywhere - including a few from the age of Ashoka, the famous Indian king who adopted Buddhism after having a change of heart over this earlier, blood-thirsty warrior ways and who supposedly had 84,000 stupas build across ... read more

From Pokhara we took a tourist bus to Kathmandu.. It’s been the best transport we’ve had in all of our travels… A cruisy 6 hours ride with 2 toilet stops. What do we want more! Arriving in Kathmandu we saw a big smog cloud hanging over the city! We where back in the choas. Barking of the dogs, honking of the cars, people everywhere!! Kathmandu Kathmandu is the capital and the largest city of Nepal. The city has often electricity cuts, traffic jams and is regularly paralysed by political madness. We found ourselves a nice little hostel in Paknajol, instead of Thamel. Thamel is known as the tourist centre of Kathmandu boardering the "old city" of Kathmandu. Determent to explore the city the next day we went to “the Monkey Temple” also called "Swayambhunath" Our first ... read more

Kathmandu I couldn't sleep last night, as i was so excited to head out on another motorcycle adventure.  At 4:30am i was Skype chatting Kennedy and Stacey while emailing Shawn in the office.  Eventually, i went back to sleep. After a quick breakfast at 7am, i headed out with a change of socks and my wallet.  On my way to get the bike, i stopped to grab some cash. Yesterday the atm blocked my bank card because i was confused and tried my pin too many times.  This morning my Visa was inside an ATM about to get me cash when the power failed.  Actually, it did not fail; every morning here there is 2 hour rolling power time out.  If only i knew...my Visa remains inside the lifeless belly of the Atm. I rented the ... read more

"We met Tsering at the border when we crossed over from Tibet into Nepal. He chatted to us while we waited for our bus to Kathmandu. Tsering invited us to visit his school there later in the week. He was on holiday visiting his family. He said we could come to the school to find him and guess what? WE DID! At the school Aiden and I went to the classrooms and had a look around. It has a good view at the top! There's lots of rooms to hide in! The children looked happy and they were studying hard. They made some good posters to put on the wall to share their learning. I asked what we could do to help and Tsering said he wanted to paint a new picture on the wall. First ... read more

The first thing that came to our mind when planning a trip to Nepal was trekking. We had wanted to do some of the world famous treks. The Annapurna Circuit or Langtang were high up on the list, but after my little hospital stay in Tibet, I wasn't overly keen to experiment with altitude again! We eventually decided on the Helambu Trek mainly because it didn't require long bus rides and the maximum altitude is 3640m. The most difficult aspect of the trek was choosing a trekking agency. Every second shop in Kathmandu is a trekking agency and every fourth guy who approaches you in the street is a 'guide' (The first guy is usually trying to sell you dope, the second is selling Tiger Balm and the third is trying to coax you into a ... read more

Even though I hardly slept due to a horrible bout of hayfever, I managed to drag myself out to explore Kathmandu's sister cities - Patan and Bhaktapur. And yes I did have cold & flu and hayfever tablets to pack - but in typical Casey fashion, I left them at home along with my panadol, sunscreen and my hat! Awesome effort! Haha! Myself and another "Builder" from Sydney set out with our private tour guide and driver at about 9am. A 20 minute drive had us arriving in the Kathmandu Valley city of Patan. Patan has a population of approximately 200,000 and is the third largest city in Nepal. It is a World Heritage Site and home to the former royal palace (Nepal was a Kingdom until 2008 when it became a Republic). To get into ... read more

These photos would have been better with the text but hopefully with the notes underneath each one, you can make sense of them. I tried to up load a video of the two drivers but it didn't work. I couldn't believe it when on the way to the village, the drivers friend squeezed into the seat with him and one steered while the other did the gears. I was not convinced that it was the best time for a driving lesson but just prayed that I was not destined to leave this life while in Nepal. I am not able to receive sms's while in Nepal so look forward to your comments via this blog or an email now and then. Buffy X... read more

I had promised Raju last year that when I next came to Kathmandu I would go with him to visit his family in the village of Kavre in the mountains. The nearest town that you would probably find on any map is Sindhuli. It is south east of Kathmandu and took us an hour by taxi to Banepa, then we took a big beaten up bus for about 4 hours to the village then walked for about an hour down from the top of the mountain to his house, along what you would call goat tracks, beautiful but at times precarious. I had never been off road on a bus before and that is what we did. Bus route? No way! The views where something to behold but I often had the feeling that I was ... read more
