Our day started with a spider. A huge spider. Literally as big as the palm of my hand. It was in our bathroom and we didn't want it to go into our beds or suitcases so our only option was to smash it. Plus it was really fast so there was no hope of catching it. So we shut the door and armed ourselves with shoes and then I chased it around the bathroom before successfully smashing it and throwing it outside. Mission accomplished! After breakfast we rode elephants looking for rhinos. There were four of us on each elephant riding on a platform on its back. It was fun and we could see pretty well from up on top. We went through the jungle and got sufficiently covered with branches and spiderwebs. But we managed ... read more

Just spent about 30 minutes typing when the browser disappeared. So this is going to be shorter and sweeter than intended. We are now in Delhi. Back in hot, sticky, down and dirty India. But ... about a week ago we finally left Kathmandu after the national transport strike had ended. We caught the first bus to Dumre and from there walked/rode the back of a tractor full of gravel to the mountain village of Bandipur. Bandipur was beautiful. Really beautiful and the people extremely friendly and welcoming. We filled two days there with walks and short hikes and an excursion into the largest cave in all of Nepal. We were a little sad to leave, but time to move on. Next stop was Pokhara. We got out of that little tourist trap pf a town ... read more

2.6.2008 CHITWAN Po priletu do Kathmandu nas privitalo trochu destive pocasi. Na hezkem, novem a vylidnenem letisti jsme svizne prosli vsema kontrolama a u informacniho okynka jsme si vzali mapu mesta a okoli a zjistovali, kudy kam. Potrebovali jsme se dostat do kancelare cestovky, u ktere jsme si dopredu zarezervovali pobyt v Chitwanu. Dvojice za prepazkou byla nesmirne ochotna a napomocna a dokonce nam vse vytelefonovali (meli jsme trochu zpozdeni a kancelar uz mela zavirat) a zjistili, jak nejrychleji se tam dostaneme. Pred halou jsme odchytli taxika (tuctuc), ktery nas dovezl skutecne na misto, na ktere jsme potrebovali (celkem zmena oproti Indii:-) V kancelari uz bylo vsechno pripravene, dostali jsme vouchery a zbezne informace a vubec vsechno tak nejak prijemne fungovalo. Z cestovky jsme vyrazili pesky do Thamelu, centra Kathmandu. Tady n... read more

Driving the Elephant Royal Chitwan National Park in southern Nepal, is home to an impressive array of wildlife. Birds, deer and boar are joined by tigers, rhinos, bears and crocodiles and seeing it all from the comfort of an elephant is pretty exhilarating. My resort was quite simply the most amazingly comfortable and luxurious place in the World. In reality, it was probably just “very good”, but after several weeks of eating only Dhal Bhaat every day and a cold dribble of water for a shower, I was suitably impressed. With the promise of exciting jungle safaris and wild animals then, I promptly had a HOT SHOWER! This memorable event taking place a full 51 days after my last. Immensely pleased then, I soon met the rest of the guests at the resort - namely ... read more

That is at least my rendition of it. That would have been very cool to see some lions, and tigers, and bears, but there are no lions, and very few (Bengal) tigers, and (Sloth) bears remaining at the Chitwan National Park, as they have a problem with poachers. Regardless, in my relatively short stay in Chitwan, I got to see elephants, rhinos, crocodiles, deer, and peacocks, along with many other birds. One of the craziest things was definitely seeing two rhinos while walking through the jungle. These huge animals look almost fake. A mixed breed of tank and dinosaur. None of the people I had spoken with prior saw any while on foot so I didn't expect to either, even though I kept my hopes up. We were all excited when we saw them, but made ... read more

We spent our last week in Nepal in Chitwan National Park, near the Indian border. We stayed at a nice hotel (with air conditioning! a real luxury, and a great relief in the hot, humid jungle). They arranged daily activities for us, including a cultural tour of the town, jungle walk, jeep safari, elephant-back safari, native dancing, and a bath with an elephant in the river. The jungle walk was interesting because our guide only had a stick as a weapon. In Kruger, guided walks always had two guards with big rifles. In Chitwan, they have rhinos, elephants, tigers, and sloth bears -- and it's generally harder to see what's surrounding you in the jungle. Luckily we made it safely through the walk! On the elephant-back safari, I got to "drive" the elephant for a little ... read more

Hi y'all, Sorry It's been all quiet on the Eastern Front, but I 've been holed up in a remote village in the middle of the middle of nowhere for the last few days. Now I've managed to find an internet cafe in the nearest town ( 2hr local bus ride - which is 200 people on and in a bus designed for about 50 people and 30 min walk!!) that has machines powered by hamsters!!! So that now I have pictures to post ( with my NEW digital camera) I cant do it! Anyway I have been at an orphanage in the south of Nepal ,and will be there until the 22nd May. I have been doing various things such as planting trees badly, doing washing - badly, and being ill - not too badly! ... read more

Arrived at Chitwan National Park on Saturday, a lovely place , and a whole world away from the chaos of Kathmandu. Didn't feel too good on Saturday evening, I think it was a case of severe man-flu ( or common cold) and as a consequence didn't feel too bright having to get up at 5.30 on Sunday to go canoeing!. The canoeing was great, apart from the torrential downpour that seemed to start as soon as I got in the canoe, and promptly stopped when I got out at the other end. After the canoeing we had a 3hr trek back through the grasslands to the lodge, which was fine, but the only wildlife we managed to see was a single wild chicken!! On Sunday afternoon, we got to ride around the National Park on the ... read more

So amazingly I am writing this relatively unscathed following quite the adventure on a 2 day Nepalese road trip to Royal Chitwan National Park. Picture this...Groat Road for 4 1/2 hours, on roads kinda like around Westmount in the spring only worse (i.e. potholes, huge holes in the road, parts of the road that are mostly boulders, parts of the road missing, you get the idea??), where there is a mountain on one side, and cliff on the other which sometimes had a barrier to prevent falling into the river or canyon, but mostly didn't. Then picture a place where by law you are supposed to drive on the left hand side of the road, but really it is however you can get there the fastest. Truly I am not even doing it justice. Oh, did ... read more
