Volunteer Work/Homestay

 Asia » Nepal » Chitwan
So today we're in Narayangarh, the city closest to where we're doing our volunteer work. I didn't think we would have internet at all the whole time we're here but so far we have. Saturday is our day off so we decided to go into the city and there's not much else to do besides use the internet and wander around. And everyone else in my group wanted to use the internet so here we are. We started our work yesterday, half of us in conservation, half in the orphanage and then we will switch every day. I started in conservation. [View Full Entry]

I'm trying to figure out how to respond to comments and I think I just have to leave my own comment on the same entry. So it's easier for me to get your comments than it is for you to find my responses. But if you ask a question or something just check back on the entry that you commented on and I will respond at some point! [View Full Entry]

Rampur

 Asia » Nepal » Chitwan
We left Chitwan National Park this morning to go start our volunteer work! We're still in the Chitwan region, but about an hour away from the national park. We're living with families in pairs. Very basic, but still nice. Our family even had mosquito nets set up for us! The toilets of course are just a hole in the ground and we have tried out the shower yet, but I think it's a real one, not just buckets of water. Our family has a grandma, mom, dad, and 3 kids, 2 girls and one boy. One girl is 17 and she [View Full Entry]

20,000 Lakes

 Asia » Nepal » Chitwan
This morning we went to some museums. One was about the Tharu culture and the other was about Chitwan National Park. It was really interesting to learn about the different Tharu ceremonies and ways of life. We got to see some of their tools and cultural dress. The National Park Center had information about all the different animals that live in the park. Supposedly they even have hyaenas! But it's really rare to see them. In the afternoon we went cycling on 1-speed bikes to 20,000 Lakes. It was pouring rain the entire time which, as I said before, was actually [View Full Entry]

Chitwan National Park

 Asia » Nepal » Chitwan
Our day started with a spide. A huge spider. Literally as big as the palm of my hand. It was in our bathroom and we didn't want it to go into our beds or suitcases so our only option was to smash it. Plus it was really fast so there was no hope of catching it. So we shut the door and armed ourselves with shoes and then I chased it around the bathroom before successfully smashing it and throwing it outside. Mission accomplished! After breakfast we rode elephants looking for rhinos. There were four of us on each elephant riding [View Full Entry]

Mountains and Rhinos

 Asia » Nepal » Chitwan
Just spent about 30 minutes typing when the browser disappeared. So this is going to be shorter and sweeter than intended. We are now in Delhi. Back in hot, sticky, down and dirty India. But ... about a week ago we finally left Kathmandu after the national transport strike had ended. We caught the first bus to Dumre and from there walked/rode the back of a tractor full of gravel to the mountain village of Bandipur. Bandipur was beautiful. Really beautiful and the people extremely friendly and welcoming. We filled two days there with walks and short hikes and an excursion [View Full Entry]

2.6.2008 CHITWAN Po priletu do Kathmandu nas privitalo trochu destive pocasi. Na hezkem, novem a vylidnenem letisti jsme svizne prosli vsema kontrolama a u informacniho okynka jsme si vzali mapu mesta a okoli a zjistovali, kudy kam. Potrebovali jsme se dostat do kancelare cestovky, u ktere jsme si dopredu zarezervovali pobyt v Chitwanu. Dvojice za prepazkou byla nesmirne ochotna a napomocna a dokonce nam vse vytelefonovali (meli jsme trochu zpozdeni a kancelar uz mela zavirat) a zjistili, jak nejrychleji se tam dostaneme. Pred halou jsme odchytli taxika (tuctuc), ktery nas dovezl skutecne na misto, na ktere jsme potrebovali (celkem zmena oproti [View Full Entry]

Driving the Elephant Royal Chitwan National Park in southern Nepal, is home to an impressive array of wildlife. Birds, deer and boar are joined by tigers, rhinos, bears and crocodiles and seeing it all from the comfort of an elephant is pretty exhilarating. My resort was quite simply the most amazingly comfortable and luxurious place in the World. In reality, it was probably just “very good”, but after several weeks of eating only Dhal Bhaat every day and a cold dribble of water for a shower, I was suitably impressed. With the promise of exciting jungle safaris and wild animals [View Full Entry]

Ok, yes I know they are cute, a straightforward visit to the zoo always brings about the onset of ahhing and cooing every time the elephants come out and do their stuff. However, to roll about, swim or get closer than 10ft from these impressive beasts, is in my eyes, bonkers, and you have to be somewhat half baked to do this as the thought of being squashed like a pancake is enough to make me keep my distance. Yet Chitwan National Park and the local town of Sauraha give you the chance to do all these things. Our elephant for [View Full Entry]
