Cor and I spent a few days in Kathmandu before deciding to head out on a week trek in the Annapurna Conservation Area. We spend our first few days wandering the streets, shopping more than we had hoped, and doing some sightseeing. We instantly found Nepal a much needed change from the people of India. Everyone in Kathmandu, despite the insanity of the streets, were much more relaxed towards us and we felt so much more at ease of wander around without the fear of being hassled. On the second day we went in Durbar Square which is full of old temples and historical landmarks, a really interesting few blocks in the middle of an enormous urban city. We also went to Boudenath where we got ourselves lost looking for hidden monestaries. After a few hours ... read more

There are two pages of photos. We spent the last couple of weeks trekking in the Himalaya mountains. The Annapurna Circut, it is called, is somewhere between 200 and 300 kilometers long, depending on who you ask. The trail starts at about 2,700 feet and we hiked up to the tallest mountain pass in the world at about 18,000 feet. It was not easy, in fact it was super hard. The first day was kind of easy. After a four hour bus ride we had lunch with some friends we met in Pokhara, and decided to take a jeep to the end of the road, where the actual trail starts. The price was a ripoff, but it was fun passing other trekkers in a jeep with a full stomach. Everything was very green and we hiked ... read more

We had decided, along with Sue, that we would do the same trek Parshu Ram (Harry) had taken us through on our previous visit here. That is, a 10-day trek up to Muktinath & flying back down from Jomsom to Pokhara. Last time I did this walk I felt, at the end, I did not want to do much more than I had, & this time, with a back 5 years older, wanted to carry less of a load. Costs for our 10-day Muktinath trek Trek Permits 6000R=$107; Guide 9000R=$161; Porter 5000R=$89; Sleeping bag/Trekking stick hire 800R=$14; Maoist "voluntary" donation 3000R=$54; Van to take us to start point 1500R=$27; Plane Flights 16530R=$295; Flight Tax 840R=$15; food & accom get paid as you go. Well class, last time we met I had been telling you about how I had begun the ascent into the Annapurna range, tried to defy some commies (and lost), and had just gotten my first glimpses of the really really high mountains. It turns out that I had no idea how much better views can get. It's time to move onto graduate level mountain views. Day 6 (11.04.07) - Braga (3500m) - Holy Crap This was easily the most beautiful day of my life. There were two options from Pisang to Braga...the low easy route along the river, or the high not-so-easy route which supposedly has tremendous views. A cloudy morning dampened my mood a bit, but I went for the high route anyway in hopes that things would clear. This was one of the better ... read more

Well...it came a bit later than planned, but I finally made it to my trek. It was long, crazy, and filled with experiences (and photos) - so I'm breaking it into multiple entries. Welcome to Part I...the first 5 days. Rather than summarize it all into some general story covering the whole thing, I thought I'd go with the approach of copying what I wrote in my journal every day on the trail. This will hopefully keep the entry to a reasonable length...otherwise I'd go on all day. When writing by pen and paper, I generally write like a 6 year old because my hand can't keep up with my mind. They end up being short sentences with often fragmented thoughts. So I'll touch it up a bit - which means many of the sentences will ... read more

Somehow I managed to wake up before the sun rose. I'm still not sure how. But I did, and, my down sleeping bag and my cameras in hand, I headed out into the frigid cold to watch the show. All around, the mountains were awash in pre-dawn blue light. Though people were scattered everywhere, I found a quiet spot on my own on the edge of a deep valley carved by a glacier. Like everyone else, I waited, my cameras at the ready. Then, it happened. Suddenly, the very tips of the mountains in front of us lit up with the sun's first rays. We couldn't see the sun, but the tops of the mountains could. Slowly, the light spread down the slopes, finally illuminating the whole ridge. It was spectacular. After an hour, my toes ... read more

As soon as I opened my eyes, at first light, I pushed aside the curtain and looked outside. Yahoo! The mountains had decided to let us see them today! It wasn't long before I was on the trail, going the last couple of hours (actually, it took three...) to the end of the line, South Annapurna Base Camp. The plan was to spend the day there, spend the night, watch the sunrise in the morning, then start heading down. This would be the last time, on this trip, that I would be this close to the mountains, and I wanted to take the time to savor it and enjoy it. The whole way up, I just kept snapping pictures and looking behind me in awe at Machhupuchre, the Fishtail Mountain, which was being backlit by the ... read more

I quickly discovered where I had gotten the energy for the trip down to the hot springs -- it was borrowed from what I had in storage for today's hike. I was exhausted today, probably from all the ups and downs the day before, and the worst up and down of all first thing in the morning. The trail went up a steep hill, which was fine, because it was early in the day, and I knew I had to go uphill in order to get to the great views at the end of the trek. But then the trail went DOWN the hill on the other side. Looking back at it, you can see clearly where the trail could go AROUND the stupid mountain. Instead it goes straight up, and straight down. I'm guessing only ... read more

It’s been a while since I’ve blogged, but for much of the last month Sarah and I have been out of contact trekking around the Annapurna range in the Nepal Himalaya (the name coming from the Sanskrit for snow, ‘Hima’ and an abode, ‘Alaya’). Our trek commenced on 5 October (the day before the England v Australia rugby World Cup quarter-final), and we returned to civilization on the evening of the 23rd. It felt like a long-time to be away from telephones, emails, a decent place to shave (see the photos!) and vehicles - I was amazed to return to find England had reached the world-cup final, although equally shocked that Hamilton hadn’t won the F1 crown. On our trek, we walked well over 200km, reaching a maximum height of 5,416m as we crossed the Thorong ... read more
