Landed in KL from Christchurch late Tues night, bus driven at, tortoise pace by driver who nearly produced his kidney by his coughing. Hotel Sentral found after asking 2 people, happy to see us despite almost being 1am, small but comfy room with working air-con, fridge and great shower. Hot and humid, BBQ Malaysian for breakfast and off to colonial area. Some impressive buildings but tend to have great facade but not the interior to match. Food stalls on street or down alleys are cheap and tasty, sometimes just have to wait until it's in your mouth until you know what it is you're eating. Chinatown is mixed bag, several temples worth viewing, Buddhist & Hindu , but otherwise old shops with original Chinese frontage selling hardware or Christmas decorations. Several helpful entrepreneurs offered latest DVD's ... read more

Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur: Unfortunately (yet quite sensibly) we had decided to cut our trip short. The original plan was to fly into Bangkok, spend 2 days roaming around integrating with the locals and then catch a sleeper train to Kuala Lumpur. Mother nature had other ideas, and decided to put a large part of Bangkok under water. We didn’t want to take the risk of getting out to Bangkok and then finding that where we were staying was in a state of crisis, so a few days before departing Heathrow, Natalie cancelled our reservation at the Bangkok hostel and got a flight out of Bangkok airport a few hours after we arrived. So, on the 1st November we flew out of Heathrow en route to Bangkok, via Mumbai as it worked out cheaper stopping off. ... read more

There's something about humid climates that compels you to stay cool and unmoving much like a reptile that's found shade on a hot summer's day. One such day in Kuala Lumpur, three of us were lazing about and watching 2001: A Space Odyssey, which two of us had never seen. When we reached the end credits, my friend said, "I feel that WTF feeling you get after a David Lynch movie." I laughed in agreement and felt chills run up my spine, literally. As I prepared for bed, I realized those chills weren't just a reaction to the movie. I felt odd. Not quite sick, but uncomfortable as the chills persisted. Am I getting the flu? I wondered. In the middle of that Sunday night, I woke up with a hot fever and the chills spread ... read more

The annual pilgrimage has started again, although this year there’s a little twist in the tale. Opportunities being what they are, are too good to resist at times so with that in mind I took a little diversion on the way over to chicken this year and dropped in on a couple of friends in Bali on the way. Well if you call flying over them to KL and then traversing from one terminal to another before jumping on the bird again to fly south for the summer dropping in. But it was an enjoyable catch up and a revisit to a place that I’d been to a few too many moons ago. It had changed a fair bit, I’m sure at one stage we were walking down a road that was a dirt track last ... read more

So, last night turned out to be a little bit eventful. Why? Because I pulled back the bedsheets to find a fat, crawling, blood-sucking bed bug, that's why. So, at midnight, I found myself picking up my suitcase and heading for the exit. I know I'm not the best of backpackers - glampacking is far more my scene and, having done so much solo business travel in the past, being by myself and not meeting fellow travellers is a small price to pay when you're staying in a luxury hotel. However I've got to draw the line at having blood drained from my already-pickled-with-mozzy-bites legs by this little critter. The man on reception was shocked, sympathetic and showed me to another room - this time an en-suite garden apartment. I didn't want to stay a minute ... read more

Having woken from my slightly limited slumber (albeit limited by my mission to finish 'Gypsy Boy', which I succeeded in doing at c. 2am), I decided to try out the communal shower facilities at my home for the next two nights. I've admittedly been a bit scared of this 'shared bathroom' malarky, preferring the luxury of a private bathroom (irrespective of whatever black mould/cockroaches such private bathrooms throw at me). But it isn't half bad here - the showers are red hot and the (one) toilet is clean. I have to trek outside to reach them which, in the monsoon rains of the afternoon/early evening, is a bit of a flipping nuisance, truth be told, however for the money (under £20 per night - cheap by KL standards), you can't argue. Breakfast is included for this ... read more

The journey from Samui was via a three hour propellor driven plane. It was tiny! I had been on a plane of its size before, when travelling around the Caribbean with my squash buddies in 2007. But, unlike me, this was Charlie's first experience of being on a plane so small.. The Fireflyz plane had two comfortable seats either side of a central eisle. We were given chocolate muffins and a drink during the flight! Malaysia is a richer country than Thailand and therefore, the currency is stronger and things cost more to buy. Thailand is geared towards the traveller/tourist as people have been flocking there for many years to see the culture and beautiful scenery. KL is a city of many tall skyscrapers that is trying to pull the whole country forward to becoming a ... read more

I had a bit of a late start this morning, but finally got myself ready and headed out the door a little after noon. First stop lunch. I did a bit of research before so I could get some good food on my way to the conference hotel from my hotel. Surprisingly, a food court in the bottom of a shopping center came highly recommended. I went. Food courts here, as I have mentioned are a bit different than what you would expect at your local mall. This one was more like a maze with stalls that just made a few dishes and did not have a full kitchen. The food is also markedly better than your typical food court fare. It is like getting the yummy food off the street, except in a lot cleaner ... read more

I have only been to foreign land a few times before. I have been to USA, Los Angeles and Colorado Springs besides Macau and Hong Kong. To neighbouring country, I have been to Thailand up to Haadyai, Singapore and Brunei. In November 2011, I will be going to make my first step on Indonesian soil, to attend the 26th Sea Games to be held at Palembang. This will be my first visit to the most populated country in South East Asia. ... read more

As you can tell we have become a little lazy on writing our blogs lately. We took the city bus from our hostel in Melaka to the Sentral Bus Station for only 1 MYR a person=31 cents, a much cheaper option for the 2 of us than the 15 MYR taxi ride into town. The little things you learn along the way. Transportation in Malaysia was quite cheap as we arrived at the bus station 40 minutes early for our bus we were switched onto an earlier bus and given some money back from the bus company. The new ticket was only 9.2MYR=$2.85 per person from Melaka to KL on Wednesday morning. The bus ride was around 2 hrs long to KL. When we arrived in KL we could see a storm approaching and the skies ... read more
