We must apologise for the lack of communication over the last two weeks but Internet has not been easy to come by and has been slow and expensive when we have managed to track a cafe down. It took 2 days of travelling from the Western coast of Thailand to get to the beautiful Perhentian Islands in Malaysia. We walked over the border in to Malaysia in the stinking heat, caught a taxi to Kuala Besut and then a speed boat to the island of Kecil. We managed to talk two Norwegian students into going to the Perhentians so we could share the taxi cost. They turned out to be a bit aloof and snooty but at least we scored a cheap ride. We arrived there late in the afternoon to find that there were only ... read more

As we were waiting for the night train to the Perhentian Islands to leave KL Sentral, we came to talk to a young man sitting beside us. He turned out to be an Indonesian currently working in London and was on his way to a beach holiday with his fiancé. He was very nice and refreshing, and when we left for our platform we told him goodbye in Indonesian, which left him quite surprised. We could only get to the platform and on the train half an hour before departure, the platform was closed up to that time. Trains in Malaysia are comfortable and always on time, but the network is not very extensive. There are actually only two lines, one on the western side and another one on the eastern side, whereas these lines run ... read more

Hello guys, Ok, so spent 5 days in the Perhenthian Islands which was very cool. Did loads of diving and saw loads of cool stuff. Turtles, Giant Moray Eels and swam with sharks... Elliot and i then went our seperate ways for a few days as I wanted to go back to Railey for some more rock climbing and he wanted to go to Phi Phi for some diving. Railey was just as amazing as before and when my arms stopped working an i could not climb anymore I jumped onto a boat for Phi Phi. I liked Phi Phi, it's more of a night time kind of a place as not much happens during the day. Elliot did 3 dives there and was not impressed so I didnt bother. What then did have was a ... read more

I think the pictures speak for themselves, we spent a week in the perhinthians before going to singapore. It was a small relatively undeveloped tropical paradise. No cars and only partial electricity. We did another snorkelling trip where we saw turtles and sharks and nemos, it was great.... read more

Once again I'm playing catch up with my travelblogs! James and I spent about six days on Perhentain Kecil Island, one of the two main Perhentian Islands. We arrived in early July and we would probably have spent longer there if we had not had to make our way up to Bangkok for mid-July. Nonetheless, six days was time enough to recharge from the exertions of mainland Malaysia and to generally just chill out on this small isolated beach. I doubt I'll ever find a beach and sea that I like more than this one. In the six or seven weeks that have passed since my time there I haven't found a place that can challenge its number one spot on the 'Chris List', although some have come close. It's also pleasing for me to have ... read more

No, I haven't been eaten by a whale shark... I've just been away from the computer for a while saving my money and taking the Open Water diving course. The diving has been amazing here. I had four dives and already I saw 5 sea turtles, a rare eagle ray, lots of colorful fish and corals. I took the course with 3 German teens visiting their older sister, one of the Spice dive instructors. Every time we went underwater it was like a circus and we spent more time trying to clear our masks after laughing so hard than we did doing the practice drills. To be honest the whole diving theory was a complete bore to me. I just don't have a lot of interest in the equipment or whole concept of diving. But taking ... read more

After 3 days of lounging around the island I've decided to get moving and take a dive course. At 3 o'clock this afternoon I'll make my first attempt at scuba diving! I went out on one of the dive boat yesterday and snorkeled for an hour or so. It was great! I saw a school of squid and a big group of bone head (?) parrot fish. Can't wait to see more. It looks like Kaze the Japanese wonder cat has settled in just fine and follows Tasha everywhere like a dog. I've made friends with a few lovely German girls and I've really been enjoying sitting on the decks of Spice Divers listing to people talk about their travel adventures and diving stories. The water here is so clear and the sand on the beach ... read more

Our speed boat pulled onto the white sands of Long Beach yesterday evening. It has been a little over 24 hours here and already I feel at home. The Perhentian Islands are truly paradise!! My first day was spent lying on the beach, hanging out on the couches at Spice Divers and reading a book on the porch of my bungalow. I've been enjoying seeing Natasha and Mazlin in their natural elements, too. It's very VERY laid back here. Lots of nice people and good food. I think I'll stay a week...or maybe two...... read more

I write this final journal entry from a busy internet cafe on the Khao San Road, oh yes, back in the steamy noodle metropolis of Bangkok one last time. I spent the day on the pool deck of that same hotel I snuck into three months ago on my first days here... I can hardly believe how quickly time has passed. In 12 hours, I'll be on a 747 Jumbo Jet bound for home... but not before stopping in Taipei, Anchorage and New York. At noon on Wednesday, if all goes according to plan, I'll touch down in Halifax after three months of South East Asian Adventures. I set out on this journey to find something. I'm not sure what it was, but I THINK I've found it. I feel satisfied, fulfilled and ready to come ... read more

Happy Happy Summer! While all you Connors/BRCC/extended family folk were partying in Hackett's Cove this Saturday, I was on a midnight train bound for Malaysia. And don't think I wasn't thinking of you! Since I last wrote from Bangkok, just after leaving the lovely lovely Laos, I've continued on my journey...south. Wayyyy south! Back in May, (seems like a lifetime ago!) I visited 2 of the 3 islands located in the Gulf of Thailand: Koh Tao and Koh Samui. (You may recall the food poisoning/parasite incident? That was there.) Anyway, since I missed out on Koh Phagnan, the one in the middle, I dropped in (sounds so casual, eh?) on my way to Malaysia. I knew that two Swedish girls I befriended in Laos were going to be there as well. Anyway, Koh Phagnan is the ... read more
