Perentian Island - Pulau Besar Thank you all for your useful comments on my recent plea for help over the Mozzie Bites. Does fruit get classed as sweet Alan?, ah well, spicey for me from now on. I thought John Leonards was excellent and was up for trying it until I read Jen's and realised that they like 'smelly'. I laughed out loud I'm afraid at Jen's, and the memory of her standing on the jetty at Manukan near Kota Kinabalau, with her arms crossed while 'sweaty steve' carried her luggage along the pier. It is impossible for me to keep from being 'sweaty' carrying a 16 kilo backpack and possibly a 2 kilo front pack (depending on the book I am reading) in 30 odd degree's. I would have liked nothing better than to find ... read more

So after a pretty horrible train journey from Thailand (and very disconcerting looking out the window to see the Thai army patrol the stations of southern Thailand with M16 machine guns), we arrived in Malaysia to the pouring rain, a great welcome after the sunshine of Koh Phangan. Met up with a kindly Malaysian man on the bus to Kota Bharu whose ravings ranged from his travels to Pakistan and Iran, to the wonders of Vitamin C suppments (while insisting we try them...) and finally to the sinful nature of Bangkok and how he has recently found God. So with all the fun of the diving in Thailand, booked a dive package on the Perhentian Islands (tropical paradise off the coast of Malaysia) to do our advanced diving. Booked with Dive Tribe, a geat dive company ... read more

Our arrival in Georgetown was met with a search for a room in sweltering heat that eventually ended after stumbling across a not too scummy guest house. The standard of accommodation in Malaysia seems to be the worst value for money compared to everywhere we have stayed so far, and it took a while to find a place that didn’t resemble a prison cell or smell of dead things. After securing a couple of nights at a friendly guest house, we took a stroll around the colonial streets of Penang’s capital. Georgetown possesses a diverse mix of race and religion and both China Town and Little India represent the huge mix of different cultures present throughout the whole country. The main religion here is Muslim, although both Hinduism and Christianity have a following but as a ... read more

In this modern day and age it is said that before we retire, most people will have had five distinct careers.* With an expected working life of 45 years that's one every nine years. Ten years since I graduated and now I've hit my second, professional diver. A grand title. After months of training and lots of hard work I've reached the lowest wrung of the PADI professional career ladder, I am a divemaster. I found a job on Coral Bay, Perhentian Kecil - at Dive Tribe. Island fever hit the previous divemaster, hit her hard and left her reeling. Island fever is the result of spending too long on a very small island, a special tropical edition of ground hog day. Same food, same music, same weather, same sand - sounds and looks idyllic, but ... read more

Unbelievably chilled out! I spent a whole week on Perhentian Kecil, or "the wee island" as I referred to it. I found out just today that Perhentian literally means "resting place" (not in a morbid way!) and I can't think of a better place to relax to the max. My new travel buddy Stacey and I landed a pretty good chalet in the first place we tried on Long Beach, which was lucky given how hard it can be find accomodation there at the minute. We had a couple of days of swimming in lovely warm, clear water and toasting ourselves on the beach before our diving started. I really enjoyed doing my Open Water PADI course, once the super-boring videos were over. The fish and the coral were ah-mazing! Highlights of the Perhentian Islands... * ... read more

If you're wondering why I haven't been writing much lately, it's because I've succombed (sp?) to the island life. Man - is it ever easy to get sucked in! Anything other than laying in the sand and floating in the aqua green waves is just not worth doing (except maybe eating!). I'm even behind in my journal because I couldn't be bothered to pick it up. But today I've had a few hours to kill waiting for a bus - so I'm getting caught up at last! The Perhentians have been my fav place so far, I think. We met a really solid crew of peeps here and have had a great time chillin' on the beach. We've met some super cool Americans, a Swede, and an awesome Canadian couple who've been teaching and living over ... read more

Heya all, thanks again for all the messages, great to hear em has got the taste for beer!! Were now on perhentian besar, at the tuna bay resort, which is a lot posher than i thought it was gonna be, like a real hotel really, not just a shack that im used to. The weather has been amazing so far, but it is only our second full day. Got a wee bit sunburnt yesterday...spent too much time snorkelling, but when theres a coral reef just off the beach it would seem rude not too. So many fish, its like being in an aquarium, apparently there are turtles around aswell, havent seen any yet but im going to go for a swim later this afternoon. Food is incredible, just having loadsa bbq'd fish...mmmmmmmmmm Nothing much else to ... read more

Hi Everyone, Perhentian Islands, just 2 small islands 1big 1small the big island is only 5miles long and 2 miles wide, fabulous diving, snorkelling in the warm warm sea 29 degrees plus cheap good food and the downside, (has to be one at least!!) the beer was expensive!!! 1pound twenty pence a can but the best "apres diving" bar we have found. It took 5 hours in a minibus from Cameron highlands to reach Kota Besut, 45 k south of the main town of Kota Bharu. From here its 3/4 hour by fast boat. We had debated on coming to this side of Malaysia as there's some trouble on the Thai side of the border and we were advised not to cross the border just north of Kota Bharu, However we've spoken to so many other people ... read more

So usually i'd just start the blog with us arriving in Pulau Perhentian, however on this occasion i will have to start with our journey from Taman Negara.... We arrived back on our motorised kayak to the dock where a guy had previously booked us on a coach to the jetty, a boat to Perhentian and our hostels on the island, this was our first mistake, TRUST NO-ONE! When we arrived back he advised us that our coach was running half hour late, no problemo mate still more than enough time... An hour later we were started to get a tad annoyed as the man advised the bus may not be here in time ad we may need to take a cab. Fine as long as we don't have to pay anymore, but he was attempting ... read more

Rick says: Right hello everyone and welcome to another fascinating log of the web variety. We've had an amazing time in Malaysia (and Singapore) since leaving Oz and done sooo much and all in less than a month!! There is a huuuugee amount of photos for you to trawl through if you wish, but please do as I just couldnt stop adding more and more pics to this good damn thing! In a nutshell: Singapore - 4 days, clean (apart from Little India where we stayed!), fairly cheap, hot & humid, skyscrapers, colonial, they all spoke English, Tescos and M&S!. So a nice easy introduction to Asia. Malaysia - There for just under a month and on a whim decided to fly to Malasian Borneo, Sabah. And what a great decision it was cos it was ... read more
