After making the mistake of returning to KK from Kinabatangan (after leaving our luggage here) we decided to fly to Semporna to save some time. The flight was meaningless and hardly got off the ground before landing but it served a purpose, so it wasn’t meaningless. We hadn’t organised anything here so we managed to hitch a ride from the airport to Semporna. The bus dropped us off outside some stilted huts hovering over the sea. This place is full of them. Some of them HUGE. Anyway – this seemed like the tourist hub and there was a queue of people trying to book accommodation and trips to Sipidan and Mabul. We were not expecting this and this brought on a bout of panic in Laura especially after being told there was no accommodation left and ... read more

We hadn't heard of the islands Sipadan & Mabul when we were in the UK planning our trip but as you venture out to this part of the world then you will often be asked the question "so have you dived at Sipadan?" The reason for this is that Sipadan has been voted one of the world's best dive spots and is famous for it's huge limestone drop off that is crowned by the island itself. Here in this area you find huge shoals of fish, sharks and turtles and a whole host of other marine life you probably won't find elsewhere. Access to Sipadan and the other islands in the area is via Semporna, a very rough around the edges town on the South East side of Sabah state in Malaysian Borneo. After coming across ... read more

We spent three days on the Seaventures dive rig exploring the underwater worlds of Mabul, Kapalai and Sipidan. The rig was pretty basic and still smelled like a rig or ferry. It is a rusting hulk planted about 500m off the coast of the island of Mabul. It was strange walking around it, I kept feeling like it should be moving like a ferry, it was hard walking down the corridors in a straight line, talk about sea legs (or not!)! Our room was pretty basic, twin beds and a bathroom that desperately needed ripping out and replacing. But the rig as a whole worked as an accomodation block and man-made dive site. The staff and food were good, three meals a day, plus "afternoon tea". The diving wasnt as good as we were expecting though. ... read more

June 11th Today, we decided, was "Snorkel Mabul Day". We started by snorkeling part of the northern reef. We just walked to the end of one of the jetties and hopped into the turquoise water. We saw a lot of life including the biggest Trumpet-fish we'd ever seen. Even though this side of the island sees a lot of boat traffic, the reefs between the jetties are still beautiful. After lunch, together with Esther and Fiona we charted a little boat to take us to the south-eastern reef. It's only about 300m from where we stay but a bit of a mission to get to without a boat. This reef is absolutely gorgeous with a deep drop-off, beautiful coral and tons of life. Highlights were a Blue-spotted Stingray that allowed us very close for a photo, ... read more

June 8th Today was the big day... Diving the legendary Sipadan Island. Unfortunately Ferdi had a feverish night and woke with a terrible cold. We were lucky to get the permits to Sipadan so we didn't want to give them up. We packed our snorkeling gear just in case he couldn't dive. The morning was off to a dubious start and would get progressively worse. First, we almost missed the boat cause they were leaving early and in the rush to get to the boat we forgot our water and sodas at the dive shop. Then we had terrible weather with big swells which slowed us down considerably, instead of taking 45mins to reach Mabul Island it took us an hour and a half. Here we dropped off a few passengers and picked up a few ... read more

From Koh Lipe to Langkawi Island we had an interesting travel with a speed boat. The sea was rough and the boat at difficulty in crossing the waves. We all got wet our legs were aching by the strech of the muscles. We stayed at AB Motel ( RM 80 ) on the Cenang Beach . We had sea food and duck at dinner at Orkid Ria Restaurant. We caugth the night train from the mainland (Arau) to Kuala Lumpur (KL). We had a perfect sleep on the train. Early in the morning we arrived at KL. We wandered few hours at Bintang Area and then took the bus to the airport for our fligth to Tawau (Borneo Island). Upon arrival at Tawau we shared a taxi to Semporna (RM 95 total) where we had a ... read more

After visiting Kota Kinabulu and deciding not to climb the mountain but to save our pennies and go learn to dive we took the horrible night bus to Semporna. After arriving at 4am and wandering around town until we found a hostel with 24 hour reception we managed to book ourselves a little trip to Mabul island. We've just returned from a week with dear Uncle Chang on Mabul island. Mabul is famous for three things, Uncle Chang, the diving and the tanduay (see pics). We had an amazing time, met some amazing people and saw some amazing things, sharks, turtles and nemo to name but a few. Dom completed his open water diving course which means he can now dive anywhere but due to my ears I just snorkled, (I say 'just' but the snorkeling ... read more

I was planning to go to Singapore on the 1-2 day train and fly out to Brisbane....I swear my intentions were honourable. But then it all started when I said Lisa should come with me on the train, we'd have a giggle and she could explore Malaysia and possibly Indonesia. Her plan ws to stay in Thailand and head up North. So she pretty much decided within 10 minutes that she wisnae doin that and she was comin with me instead. But then, she asked a very naughty thing of me. So I said yes and re-booked my flights to Brisbane (at no extra cost - woopee!) for the 21st December so that I could see some of Malaysia with her. Man what a good idea that turned out to be. It was also an expensive ... read more

Our mission Borneo is world's third largest island and filled with authentic people, amazing culture, extra-ordinary nature and details you wouldn't find any where else. The plan was simple - dive Sipadan Island, explore the Sabah jungle and climb Mt. Kinabalu. Mabul Of course the profit goes into the the pocket of the already rich owners. The locals, who have customary rights to the land, are left with scrapes. After our night in Kuala Lumpur (details in another blog coming soon), we took the early morning flight to Tawau. We got picked up by Chok and reached Semporna after an hour of drive. I needed to withdraw come cash but the only A... read more
