After spending the night in Kota Bahru we took the early morning mail train along the 'Jungle Railway' - so called as it runs through the rainforest of Taman Negara National Park. As the sun rose spectacularly from the darkness, local folk frantically loaded the train with their goods for market - fruit, vegetables, even mattresses, thankfully no livestock. We managed to find some seats and got plenty of "what are those crazy white people doing on this train?" looks from the locals. This train was not fast. I don't think it even met the criteria for slow, maybe sub-slow. At times I could have walked along side and kept up. Not only was this train sub-slow, it stopped everywhere. Some stations were nothing more than a bench placed at the track side - no platforms, ... read more

Transport to Taman Negara (TN) took us the best part of a day. We took a more gentle ride by speed boat from the Perinthians back to Kuala Besut on the mainland, then made the 8 hour minibus ride to Taman Negara. The journey was such a contrast to the bus journeys we had experienced in Indonesia the previous week! We had only 4 in our minibus so enjoyed numerous seats to relax on! We spent much of the morning leg eating fake/halal Pringles! After a lunch pit stop at a fancy hotel I managed to eat a whole loaf of "amazing" bread! 1 hour before we arrived at our jungle base camp, Kuala Tahan, we stopped at a town called Jeruntut for a short while where tour agents attempted to flog us some overpriced package ... read more

the lion sleeps tonight, well there isn't any lions but there is tigers. However they are deep deep in the jungle and I will not have time to get into the deeps of the jungle so no worries about me being attacked. Before i go on, i feel like i should just straighten this out, i know that some blogs are missing from new Zealand and these will eventually appear but i want to have my blogs as up to date as possible as my parents are worried about me alone in Asia (arh bless) and have a feeling that i will get myself into some situation that only the British embassy can solve and as i don't have a phone i thought i should be as up to date as i can be, please remember ... read more

Hello everyone, how are you all? Hope you've been enjoying the bank holiday weekend! It's been a while since we've done an up to date blog so this one covers quite a lot of areas throughout Malaysia. However, I've got a treat in store for you this time as this is Stu's debut blog. Enjoy.......! We arrived in Kuala Lumpur on the 12th May after taking a pleasant coach from Penang. We found the bus surprisingly cool with good air conditioning and it was a nice change not to leave the bus feeling like you had just gone for a swim at the baths. Actually we nearly didn't make the bus to KL as Michelle had a last minute craving for "something chicken". This was inspired by our first sighting of an Asian McDonalds. Unfortunately the ... read more

1st May Jumunjy Party! T (bar owner) asked if we would dress up as devils again for their party - well, of course, does a bear xxxx in the woods? oh yeah, we didnt need much encouragement to don the outfits once again for the grand finale. I had to overstay my Thai visa 3 days but wanted v much to go to T and Bim's party, as we love Jumunjy Bar! This time our numbers were depleted, no Satan I'm afraid, he was out on Koh Tao diving - totally unreliable is Satan, and there was only me and Shay! however, we recruited 2 angels (the outfits were still lying around, bit worse for wear around the house!), we got our friend Sam, and Duck - our lovely lovely gay mate from Sports Bar next ... read more

I left my lovely home in Chiang Mai. it was a very sad farewell, but it was time to move on. I got to the airport and everything went relatively well except that I hadn't known about air asia's 15kg baggage limit (guess you should read the fine print when flying a budget airline). my bag was 18.1kg. I was able to remove enough stuff that i was able to check my bag without having to pay. yay. i left on my jet plane and was excited to get to malaysia. i get through customs and all that without a problem and decide to take a bus that would take me directly to my hotel. it is supposed to be a 1 hour journey and after about 45 minutes, we approached the big city of Kuala ... read more

The bed was a raised platform of hard, widely spaced wooden slats. Ours was one of eight and they were all located in a concrete room about ten meters square, the roof was wood and tin and in one corner was the toilet. The toilet was filthy with mud and crawling with insects, the shower, such as it was, was fed from a tank in the roof and leaked, sending a constant stream of water down the concrete steps that grew mould, moss and harboured whole colony's of ants. One wall of this concrete box had a four meter slit in it which served as a window and the only means to view the outside world (it was here that we were forced to spend most of our time) and the whole structure was raised five ... read more

After a fairly long bus & train journey from the Cameron Highlands, we arrived at Taman Negara Rain Forest! Our main objective was to find a hostle and fast. the rain was BUCKETING it down and we werent really up for trecking about the town with our bags on in the rain... We all checked out a hostle that was 1.30GBP A NIGHT. this suited us just fine being on a budget and all. but Lisa and Diana were put of very much so by the bathrooms! which we thought were quite nice lol. So they ventured out in the rain and found a hostle for the same price as ours but it had internet, nicer bed, hot water and air con. all of which our hostle didnt have!!! That evening we set out with a ... read more

Hello! We are in Taman Negara National park the Eastern side of Malaysia, where we have spent two nights so far, plus a further one tonight before KL tomorrow morning. I never never been to a rainforest, and it is spectacular. The power of nature is evident in such abudance in the rainforest. As we found out yesterday.... We caught another minibus from the Cameron Highlands on Monday with our new friends Diana and Lisa an American and Australian respectively, after about 8 hours travelling and a short delay in a small town outside the park we arrived in the pouring rain, wanting to sit in the van a while longer because it was so wet. We were turfed out pretty quickly and left to find ourselves shelter. We stumbled upon a cheap hostel and decided ... read more

We left Kuala Terengganu a little apprehensive about the journey ahead of us and with good cause. Taman Negara is notoriously difficult to reach and for us it was no exception! Following a 7hr night bus journey from Terengganu to Kuala Lumpur, we loitered in the hotel lobby of the 5* Crowne Plaza Hotel (they were not pleased to see us!) and boarded a second bus after 3hrs that would take 3hrs. Having reached the small town of Kuala Tembeling we embarked on a 3hr boat journey in an uncomfortable wooden long boat and then- finally- having reached Kuala Tahan and the headquarters of the national park, we took one final 15 minute boat journey to our camp. I was really excited to have arrived and, despite the exhaustion, the boat journeys were really scenic and ... read more
