Day 4 The circular fountain was centered in the plaza that lay at the end of a cobblestone street, lined on both sides by colorful buildings that once housed various Portugese businesses but today are occupied by shops like Haagen Dazs and the Body Shop. Macau has a distinctly old world, European feel at its core and for the day, I felt like I'd left Asia and could have been roaming the streets of 18th century Lisbon. We tried to spend our time seeing the old town rather than the glitz of the casinos and Gucci windows that greet you when you arrive via ferry. So begins our day in Macau... We woke up early to catch the ferry and it couldn't have been easier. There was no need to buy our tickets in advance and ... read more

Pre-MacauEvents Just another "we will miss the flight!" scare; feels like crying just the thought of it(a.k.a huhuhu, i don't want to waste PHP9,000++)! Of course we still made it to the Airport ;) we were the last ones to board. Just to be informed that our flight will be delayed for 30 minutes. Our plane finally took off at around 8:30ish. It was just a small plane, just as small as the ones used in the domestic flights. More than an hour after taking off, we were informed that our plane was having technical difficulties and that we were going back to Manila; the last thing I would want to hear in the middle of the flight - it freaked me out! The flight attendants couldn't assure the fate of our flight. Just as we ... read more

June 16-18, 2007 Found my way from the Guangzhou train station to the shuttle bus that takes you to Macau. It was suppose to be at this big hotel but because of renovations they moved it across the street at some exhibition place. I had trouble finding where to buy the tickets cause it was tucked away in the parking lot. The ride was about 1h30mins if I remember correctly. Got off at customs and while waiting in line met this Mexican dude who was visiting a friend. We took a taxi together into town. He was pretty cool, works for a in communication and PR for Jaricho, a Mexican production of traditional dances and music (http://www.jarocho.net/). The taxi dropped off at the Grand Lisboa that was being built. We parted ways when I had to ... read more

We took the Macau ferry from Hong Kong to spend the day. Our first stop was the Macau Tower, which provided great views of the surrounding area, even though it wasn't a very clear day. It was fun to watch the people bunji jumping from the top of tower. There is also a skywalk thing they have, where you can walk outside along the ledge surrounding the tower (secured in, of course.) It's a pretty neat idea, even if that ledge did get in the way of some of my pictures. We stopped at a random restaurant for lunch, and the food was amazing. Macau is known for it's salty cod and Portuguese custard tarts, known as natas. So good... We had a taxi take us to the Ruin's of St. Paul's Church, and we're all ... read more

“There is a problem with the engine” said the Captain not long after we had passed the half way point aboard our ferry from Hong Kong to Macau. Quite a commotion followed; the hosties weren’t quite sure what to make of the alarm or the reaction of the people on board, namely Chinese people who were terrified the ferry was going to sink. Lots of life jackets were donned and photos taken. A few people became quite irate when there was another pipe made “We are sorry for inconvenience but we will now be arriving three hours later than expected”. This resulted in some instant noodles that are usually for purchase, being made up to keep the masses happy. This was quite a process and the handing out of the noodles was not in any particular ... read more

Everybody visited the same places today but at different times. Some of the highlights were the Ruins of St. Paul which is an icon for Macao, next to it is the Monte Fortress with great views of the city. Also visited was Fisherman's Wharf which is a complex of areas featuring different architecture, restaurants and shops such Portugal, New Orleans, Old Macao. Took to the bus to Cotai between th islands of Taipa and Coloane and visited the Venetian. They had great shopping and food arcade. We found a great new casino game, video roulette. A covered roulette wheel is surrounded by 8 video screens on which you bet. The boys thought they were great fun. That night we went to a neat little Portuguese restaurant and with dinner drank some vinho verde, a very popular ... read more

Hi Everyone, Lots has happened since my last entry. This trip has been a whirlwind so far. Hopefully I form a fairly coherent story of what's gone down. On December 30th we took the ferry from Hong Kong over to Macau. While Hong Kong is a former British colony, Macau is a former Portugese colony, and it's where Sheena's Mom grew up. It's also becoming the Las Vegas of Asia. We took the ferry with Sheena's brother and sister - both of whom threw up on the trip. Gross. Strangely enough, we had to go through customs to go from Hong Kong to Macau - I guess they're still pretty separate territories, despite both being part of China now. From there we decided to go across another border into mainland China for some factory direct shopping. ... read more

Today is a very foggy day and we checked out of our hotel at noon, hauled our luggage to the MTR and headed for the piers. One hour hydrofoil ferry ride and we arrive in a even foggier Macao. After checking in our hotel, we head to Largo do Senado. This is a large square which has been a hub of Macao for centuries. It was beautifully lighted for Christmas. We had a huge Chinese meal in a fun restaurant there. One of meals was a whole chicken and its' head was included to show it was fresh. The kids didn't have lunch and it was like the locusts landed at their table. They got a couple of the adults' meals and before we could retrieve them -everything was gone. We broke into groups and headed ... read more

Day 3 of the trip. Stef and I went to collect another stamp in our passports, we headed off to Macao for the day. With it being the Christmas vacation, HK was very very busy. I had been advised to book the return ferry to Macao in advance, good job too as the boat was full and the lines were long!! So, we booked our tickets on our first day, HK$300 return for the day trip. We had an 11am ferry. We got to the terminal for 10:40 and the queues were large. Even tho we had tickets I was positive that we had dudd ones off a douche bag seller that'd run off with our money and we would never see it again. I was wrong. The line was long, but I do not think ... read more

My last visit to Macau was a great week-end back in December 2002...long time a go, a week-end spent eating, partying and playing golf. This visit was a little different....as you don't party the same way when you are travelling with an 8 years old kid! We had two main goals for these 30 hours in Macau...Cirque du Soleil and Fernando's! Both done, with great fun. First, the new direct flight from Saigon with Viva Macau, the local low-cost. Had no idea what to expect...ended up with an old 767, empty, but not bad...I was just worry that the airline could go bankrupt before our flight was due! So safe on this one! We dropped the luggage at the Westin Coloane before heading for lunch. I've been here before, but only to play golf... And we ... read more
