I decide to make the day trip over to Macau via the fast jet and don’t regret it. My assumption of Macau is a gamblers paradise and not much else right? Well like my initial impression of Hong Kong as a shopper’s paradise only was wrong so is that of Macau. Macau until 1999 was occupied by the Portuguese and the influence is evident throughout the city and the historic center. Both Portuguese food and Portuguese architecture has influenced the look and tastes throughout the city. Even though the casinos are a big draw card of Macau, earning more revenue the Las Vegas, it’s possible to explore some nice sights of the city without stepping foot into the casino. I decide to take the free bus available at the jetty to get to a random casino ... read more

This is my first time in Macau as a real tourist. When I was little, I came to Macau with my family a few times. However, my father would spend the whole day in the Casino, abandoned my brother and I in those beat up arcades. Sad.... read more

Having felt as though I'd missed out on a lot of the things I wanted to see and do in Macau, I decided to take another trip over the Gambling islands. My intentions were to visit the same attractions that I had planned to the previous week, without rushing or missing any. So, the first step was to get up earlier and leaver earlier then before, last time I was on a ferry at 10:30, this time at 08:30. As is a great custom of mine, I slept on the ferry, an hours trip is perfect for a little recovery nap. With my hood over my face to block light, and iPhone playing the sounds of Arcade Fire into my ears the droning of the Chinese was was drowned out. I woke up shortly before the ... read more

After a day of being lazy again - which followed a day of mountain climbing - I decided I would get up and head to Macau for the day. I left the house around 09:00 and headed to Shueng Wan - not sure if that's the right spelling - but the Macau Ferry port anyway. I arrived a little before 10:00, and purchased my ticket for the 10:30 boat, and then waited for a little while to see if the German guys from the mountain would show up. After about 10 - 15 minutes they hadn't so I went to get breakfast before I got on the boat. $26 got a Sausage McMuffin, Hash Brown and a half decent coffee... $26 is just over 2pounds... very tastee in deed! I munched that, and headed for the ... read more

After the night train from Xiamen, I took the bus to the coach station in Guangzhou. That went very well and by that way I had a nice tour through the outskirts of Guangzhou. The bus stopped right at a ticket booth for the bus to Zhuhai, the border town to enter Macau. So within no time, I was on the next bus. Then I had to take another bus to the real border. It was a bit of a search, but finally I found it. Having crossed the border, I realized that I didn’t write anything down of the hotel I had booked beforehand, so I tried to find a place where they have internet or wifi, but these two things are very scarce in Macau (strange!). When I finally found a tourist information office, ... read more

We had a sleep in and another buffet for breakfast. Our first stop yesterday was the Ruins of St Paul's. This must be the main tourist attraction in Macau as there were people everywhere taking photos. It is weird because the front of the building looks perfect but that is all there is. It only a few metres thick. From here we walked to Mount Fortress and had a look at all the old school cannons. There is a great view of the city from up at Mount Fortress. Our next stop was the Macau Museum. They were scanning for H1N1 at the entrance but we both made it through ok. It was now lunchtime so we stopped to get some food including a couple of famous Portuguese egg tarts. The eggs tarts were so good! ... read more

Armed with only our "Wikitravel" knowledge of Macau and Zhuhai, Hubby and I went ahead with our "semi" backpacker journey to these 2 places. Good thing he has a few days off from work due to the National Day celebration in China and also due to the Mooncake Festival. Day 1: We hired a private car to take us to Zhuhai which is a city in the mainland that borders with Macau to the south. Our specific target destination in Zhuhai is the Gongbei District because this is where the Macau border crossing is located. The driver picked us up at 6.30AM to avoid the morning rush and so as a result, the drive to Gongbei only took us 1.5 hours compared to maybe 3 hours if we left later on in the day. It was ... read more

Aloha Earthlings, I have sat down to write this blog entry three times now. I really hope I get through it this time... I’m not sure what to write anymore. The ‘strangeness’ of my life isn’t strange anymore. I have to think about is interesting, when it used to be painfully obvious. Life as I know it involves eating pig spine, dealing with typhoons, flirting in Cantonese, and putting on long sleeve shirts in 70 degree weather (SO COLD!). Okay... that does sound weird. They tell me the seasons are changing but I don’t believe it. We have gone from really hot and muggy to really hot and muggy with more clouds, whoopty-doo. I have kept busy since we last chatted. The big headlines would read; New Apartment Old Building!. . . New Stickers for a ... read more

I checked the weather reports last night, and it seems that a Typhoon warning is in effect - We've already seen results of it, and it is only getting worse. Since that is the case, I decided to see Macau a few days early. I think that if it were not for the weather warning, I wouldn't have chosen to go on a Sunday. Too busy. There were many families with suitcases on their way to Macau - sort of like going to the cottage in reverse. I would have definitely chosen mid week. I went to the Hong Kong-Macau ferry terminal in Sheng Wan to buy a return ferry ticket. There were so many different ticket sellers that I chose what seemed to be the cheapest one. First of all, it ended up being exactly ... read more
