Our bus trip from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng was very scenic. To give you an indication of the type of terrain we were in, a 189km trip took 6 hours in the bus. The mountain ranges were absolutely magnificant but very slow going (to be honest I was quite fine with the slow ride - I have heard many horror stories of crazy bus drivers taking this route very quickly and I am not sure that my nerves could have handled this). Vang Vieng is a little town nestled in amongst the limestone cliffs. I was determined to stay somewhere where we would have the limestone cliff as a backdrop and we ended up finding these really cute little bungalows right on the river with the big limestone cliffs just opposite us (the most expensive ... read more

Vanochtend toegekomen in Vientiane.

Arriving last night, we discovered Vang Viang is reminiscent of a Mexican beach town, albeit no where near a beach or the ocean. It’s real laid back: no air service here preserves it from being over-touristed, reserving it for the diehard backpacker. Vang Viang is a valley floor surrounded by karsts. These mountains with their crag-like tops are stunning. I’m hoping to upload a digi-pic or two, soon. I’ve never seen mountains like these - they are amazingly beautiful. All the restaurants have these raised platforms with 2-3 steps up to them used for seating. You kick off your flip-flops, step up to cushions and pillows and a very low table. You sit cross-legged or with your legs extended under the table. Most of the restaurants play American sitcoms at night, like Friends and Family Guy, ... read more

Vientiane was fine for 2 nights, but would not of wanted to stay any longer, picked up my Cambodia visa, apparently the guards get creative if you get it on the border so just got it sorted there, took the easy option of a 'tourist bus' up to Vang Vieng, the big route 13 is sealed, but very slow hilly route, but not unattractive. Arrived in Vang Vieng, it's very touristy in a backpacker way, but good base for a few activities and relaxing too so I'll camp here for maybe 3 nights before getting up into the real Laos, may not be another entry for a bit, internet getting slower and more expensive Very much liking the pace and attitude here, and the view from my bedroom window of the craggy hills is to die ... read more

Not much to say about the flight apart from the fact it was absolutely fine. Delayed for an hour but all good. It was Skips B'day the day we flew in, so once we arrived in LP we booked ourselves into Phousi Guest House II, which was again cheap as chips. $5 for ensuite room with a very laid back atmosphere exactly as described in the lonely planet. Went for a very nice lunch & a few beers. LP is alot more touristy than Vietianne with guest houses & tour operators everywhere. On Thursday we got our own Tuk Tuk to the Tat Kuang Si waterfall (U$12) which is about an hour out of the city. It was lovely, also great to drive through villages & the country side. Absolutely stunning! Kids are all adorable & ... read more

We walked this morning because the trash fire smoke and exhaust was still hanging in the air. An iron-lung might be a helpful travel aide while in Laos. Our morning exploration only confirmed that we were in a very, very rundown city. Vientiane is actually the capital of Laos, but we saw nothing capital about it. We did run into a river-side, open-air dance hall of sorts. The locals were doing something in the vein of aerobics. As we continued, paralleling the Mekong River with Thailand on the other side, to our delight we spotted the morning monks, and much to our distaste we encountered smells that were both foul and unbearable. We decided that we would leave Vientiane today. There were two buses out: 10a and 2p. I was thinking the first one, but Barbara ... read more

We breezed into Luang Prabang after a short 3 hour bus ride and decided it was time for a little spoiling. We checked into a midrange guesthouse proving we really are hardcore travellers, midrange meaning sat tv, hot water in private bathroom and our own balcony (well it was until people moved into the room next door but we scared them out of using it). A week in the rough (and it wasn't even rough) and we went running for home comforts. Anyway Luang Prabang is grrrrreat, it is the former capital of Laos (now Vientiane) and the whole city, due to its preserved state is a UNESCO world hertiage site (yes another one...we are hitting one a week at the mo). The city despite being over run by tourists is an oasis of calm, there ... read more

Nong Khai in Thailand was a typical border town really, okay to stop off and prepare to move on, but that's about it, still the guesthouse had great character, esp the proprietor, very helpfull in a madcap type way. As I had sorted my Laos visa during my week in Bangkok I got into Laos the easy and cheap way, a direct bus from Nong Khai terminal where you just hop off and get your stamp on one side of the bridge to leave Thailand, then hop back on bus, over the bridge, and you get your stamp to enter Laos, then the bus continues the 20km to Vientiane. You notice very quickly how the road condition deteriates as you drive into Laos. As the only Westerner on the bus I got some attention on arriving ... read more
