So, we are finally in Vang Vien. Vientienne is being crossed of our list due to a meeting of government officials. They are prohibiting tourists from entering the city. Oh well, that gives us more time on the islands. Remmember how I said Natalie riding her bike was funny??? I take it back. Her falling off the bike is funnier!!!!!!! It was so inevitable, though. There are pictures on her blog. She is hiding her head in shame. Hahahahaha. Last night we went out to a club. The only club in Luang Prabang that allowes dancing. It was insane. There was line dancing, and no one touched each other. If they did, they laughed hysterically. We participated in the PG rated dancing for some time, and then went on our way. Our hotel was amazing, except ... read more

Well since i last wrote we have left vietnam and are now in Laos. After Sapa we managed to get a train back a day before our flight so no worrying about missing it but it did mean we had to spend another day in Hanoi which was rubbish. We had another argument with a taxi driver who drove us around the whole town for a 5 minute journey. Its so frustrating and lets just say we are glad we are finally out of there!! We flew to Vientiane the capital of Laos and as soon as we stepped off the plane we noticed the friendlier atmosphere. Even the guy at immigration smiled and said hello!! We spent 2 days in vientiane where we had our first roast dinner since we have been here, which was ... read more

Today is going to be a relaxer. Waking up and seeing your body scarred with bites swollen and red is not comforting. I'll do nothing...except ritually bathe my sores in lotion all day... these gigantic hot itchy marks that pock my skin were wells of blood for some flying thing... Eventually I change my mind.. I move to the Chanthrom guesthouse next to the Organic restaurant and after a wonderful organic breakfast, (Organic Lao Coffee is awesome - of course I had the Mulberrry and cocunut milk shake and Mulberry tea for breakfast as well), I rent a bike and ride out to the organic farm 3 km North of Vang Vieng on the Nam Song river (www.laofarm.org). The grow all maner of veggies but specialise in Mulberrry the leaves of which are fed to silkworms. ... read more

Route 13 I'm takin't the bus south from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng in the direction of the capital of Laos, Ventiane..It's a 5-6 hour trip to go about 200 KM along rte 13 infamous for attacks on buses in 2003 (Sit next to Danish guy Jinse, and some Irish behind (Michele from Kerry, Paul from Dublin, and also English guy called Derek) We've got a guy with an AK47 - we're ok! The road is narrow and very very windy with breath taking views. of mountains. Suddenly there is a loud bang and all the Farang are awoken from their music players, books and slumber. Smoke rises from the seat next to me....We pile out and see the huge whole in the tyre which is promptly fixed by the bus staff, one driver, one assistant, ... read more

We made it up to the small town of Vang Vieng a couple of days ago. Actually I think it's the province of Vang Vieng, and we're in some small town who's name I do not know. Vang Vieng is situated on the Nam Song river and one of the popular things to do is go tubing down it. So yesterday, that's exactly what we did. After paying and signing a waver we were shuttled in a tuk tuk 3km upsteam with our tubes, at this point they dropped us off and we were free to float at our leisure. The side of the river is lined with a multitude of small bars. As you pass by they'll yell "Beer Lao, Beer Lao!", and if you imply that you'll stop they'll put out a long bamboo ... read more

Vang Vieng, Lao PDR - one of the highlights of my time away, to be sure. I walked through clouds of tropical butterflies! It was just glorious. So so beautiful. Lucky me was sent to Laos again for work, from Monday 6 - Wed 8, and so took Friday before off and spent the weekend there. Vang Vieng is a beautiful town, situated on a river, and surrounded by these dramatic karsts - limestone rocks, with many caves within, and covered in green trees and shrubs. It's a really small town, catering mainly to travellers, though I was there in low season, so there weren't too many of those grubby backpackers. ;) I just adored being there. I was staying in this lovely bungalow, with a great porch, overlooking rice fields and to the looming karsts ... read more

Laos is now my favorite place in the world - I know I don't have much to compare with, but it will be hard to beat. We started off with a two day boat ride on the Mekong from the Thailand border to Luang Prabang, which included a night in a small town called Pak Beng (we're pretty sure it means "rat town" in Lao - yeah, we had some night visitors). There are some waterfalls outside of Luang Prabang that are just too beautiful to even be real, and we spent the day there. You can climb to the highest level and jump off rock into the pool for swimming, while looking at the waterfalls above and below. The lowest pool had a rope swing to launch yourself into the water - great day. As ... read more

After arriving in the capital of Vientiane we took few days to tour around the city with beautifull temples and markets. Then we where off of Vang Vieng a short stop over to Luage Prabang.. Vang Vieng turned out to one of the highlights of laos, from it weird town center (which was heavily into the tourists attention) to the untouch villiages outside town center. Clare and I took a day trek around the caves and villages.. Here a some of the photos that I took.. (I say some because I got a little "happy" with the photography)... read more
