Hey everybody!Hope you are all doing good,as usual :) I'm sitting in Vang Vieng,Laos! We arrived here today and are going on to Luang Prabang tomorrow according to plans.. I left Langkawi last Wednesday and flew langkawi-kuala lumpur-bangkok in one day! I met up with Marthe, a girl from Norway! I booked two nights at a guesthouse outside of the city - next time i'll book it in the town lol! We only had two days but I think we saw enough of Bangkok! Bangkok is soooo huge and noisy, you cant escape tuktuks and people wanting your money! The first day we booked tickets up to the laos border before we got lost in some back alleys. It was in the middle of the day but frustrating enough! We was supposed to find the skytrain, ... read more

Laos I had planned on leaving for Laos the day after my birthday, but after a late night I needed a day to recover. So on the 31st I was off with Bob and Kath (from the trek) heading for Chang Kongh which lies on the Mekong river bordering Laos. After a long bus ride we arrived in time to find accommodations, grab a bite to eat and prepare for the border crossing in the morning. The next day we stocked up on supplies (including a case of Beer Chang) and headed across the river. We had planned on cruising to Vang Vien on a slow boat down the Mekong over 2 days. Unfortunately we arrived just in time to miss the once daily slow boat, so we had to spend another day looking over the ... read more

I thought I'd start out with a little insight into how my mind works. This is important in two ways. One - it is cathartic for me to write these things down and, second, it gives each and every one of you empathy for Aneta. She spends each and everyday with me (and forever) and listens as I share some of this with her. I feel particularly empowered as I am reading a collection of David Sedaris short stories which make my neurosis seem quaint and quite mainstream. Today I was thinking about how jipped I feel about the whole Malaria thing. Maybe the whole medical travel thing. Firstly, let me say that we are grateful for our relative health during this trip barring some skin infections and stop offs for immunizations. But, really, the "exotic ... read more

Happy as we were to hop off the 'chunder' bus, our first glimpse of Vang Vieng wasn't quite what we'd expected. Rather than dropping us off at the bus stop, our mini-bus pulled up outside a guest house of a friend of theirs - pretty standard practise in Asia, where everyone is on commission to everyone else. The interesting thing about this guest house was that it was on the main street of Vang Vieng, a street that had all been torn up & covered in gravel in the middle, with big piles of rubble all over it, and massive 1-2 m ditches on each side. To access any shops or guesthouses, you had to walk over tiny wooden planks across the ditches Good fun with packs on. Anyway, we got to our guest house, a ... read more

The bus from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng was memorable - unfortunately for all the wrong reasons. There were in fact 2 minibuses departing at the same time. We ran into our South African friend from the border crossing, Claudia, who had luckily got on the nice new minibus. We were on the old decrepid one. Read no Aircon & highly cramped. Being one to get carsick & being the first person there I put my day bag in the two front seats - behind the drivers seat then stood outside stretching my legs while waiting for everyone else to turn up. Unfortunately 3 nice friendly chinese men saw that those were the best seats - in fact they looked like first class airline seats and (no joke) had as much space as the whole 6 ... read more

We loved Luang Prabang and were reluctant to leave after a few relaxing days. It comes a close runner up to Chiang Mai on our list of favourites. Laos is so beautiful with its stunning hills with limestone peaks. Gorgeous and much of it untouched. We've tried to spend as much time as possible doing things in the outdoors, and the weather is flawless. Cool mornings and evenings, but hot days. Our last 2 days in Luang Prabang we spent at a gorgeous waterfall 30km's from town called Kuang Si Falls. We took a taxi there- the ones i've mentioned earlier with the benches down either side in the back of a converted pick up truck- with erin, evelyn, andrew and tess (a couple). Most of the roads arn't paved here and are dusty and full ... read more

The Canadian boys were slow to get up. The Lao lads were chipper and smiling. They had not mixed their drinks the night before. I watched as the fishing family boys went out in their dugout to catch breakfast. Their catch was wedged between a piece of split bamboo and cooked over the fire. It was scrambled eggs and bacon for us. After more meandering down river and shooting some more rapids, we came to the mouth of the river. The Lao government is building a hydro-electric dam here which will end the river rafting and displace many people. The river flows into a lake which itself was formewd by the construction of another dam. The lake is quite pictoresque with a maze of small islands, the remains of submerged hills. We were met by our ... read more

I woke up in the middle of the night with the runs. Shit!!! I won't be able to go rafting. I took my medication and we repacked the bags just in case I had to stay behind and find my own way to Vientaine the next day. At the last moment, I decided to go rafting. Things seemed to have settled down. We loaded into a pick-up truck with the box being lined with benches along the sides, a metal frame held up a tarp to protect us from the sun. Our guide had said the company we were to go with cancelled so he set us up with another outfit. Our rafting companions were a deaf German couple and 4 young lads from the Prairies. None of them had been rafting before so we were ... read more
