Day 8, July 2, 2009, Thursday, Beishembi Surprise, surprise, we are still in Cholpan-Ata at the Cafe Chebek and the motel with the empty swimming pool. Our plans to return to Bishkek were changed around noon. Emil called from America to tell me that we were not going back to the city until Friday. When we had first worked on a bit of a schedule for me during this month without him we had discussed staying at the lake for about a week. Apparently when he found out that his mother had only scheduled 4 days, he changed everybody's plans. Timurlan and I were not sure how we felt about it yesterday. After all, we were all packed and ready to go back. But we decided to make the most of it and took yesterday as ... read more

Day 4, June 27, 2009, Saturday, Ishembi: Another early morning for me, awaking at a little before 5 am. I forced myself back to sleep and managed to make it to 6 a.m. I am just constitutionally become an old man and waking at the same time each morning. Also, in strange beds, I seem to always wake up and not be able to go back to sleep right away. But, it gives me time to think and read, and usually write some. This morning though, I discovered that Timka had taken the computer to his room upstairs and I did not want to disturb anyone, so I just waited until now. It is about 8:30 a.m., the household has begun to rise. Ainura and Dinara, Asi, Alderit, Timka, Dushen, Timka's father, now his mother and ... read more

As we set off on our next adventure to Son-Kul Lake , I began to see why Kyrgyzstan has been dubbed the Switzerland of Central Asia. We drove through lush alpine mountains on hairpin roads all the way up to a pass at 3500m. By the time we reached that point, it felt like we were really disappearing into the sky and the 360 degree views were incredible. Situated at 3016m, Son-Kul Lake is frozen between November to May and in summer, the temperature of the water reaches a maximum of 16 degrees! Being one to go swimming wherever there is water, knowing that the water was going to be cold was not enough to discourage me. When we arrived to our yurt camp though, I walked down to the lake and this particular spot was ... read more

Wednesday 11 June - Karakol to campsite, 78 km (610m climb) Breakfast in the courtyard, rather disorganized; bread and their very runny jam, then some cheese and butter arrived, then last the hot water for tea and coffee. There was meat soup that hardly anyone wanted. Today was not a nice ride - the road surface was bad in many places, and the last 30 km mostly very bad. There was a head wind some of the time, too. The road was quite hilly. I got very tired and hungry and stopped and ate my supplies, but then a few km further found everyone had stopped for the official picnic, as the lorries with the camping equipment had not arrived. Hung around a long time, had a walk down to the river. The landscape here is ... read more

I felt a distinct frisson of excitement as I boarded the flight and took my seat. This was no ordinary flight. Not only was I about to experience the unparalleled luxury of flying business class on Aviakompaniyasi Kyrgyzstan, but I was taking my first ever flight on a Tupolev, or to be more precise for airliner geeks, a Tupolev TU-134A. I tried to put my finger on what I was enjoying the most. Was it the miniature doorway that was around shoulder-height? Was it the interior that was straight out of a 1960s BOAC advert (if you ignored the carpet, which was straight out of a yurt)? Or perhaps it was the way the lights dimmed and flickered every time the pilot adjusted the flaps. Maybe it was the galley we passed through on boarding, which ... read more

KARAKOL, KYRGYZSTAN - (July 2007) Fri 6th - Sun 15th July 2007 - (Karakol) After several days hanging around in Bishkek waiting for my Tajikistan visa to be processed, I decided to go to a town called Karakol which is located at the eastern end of Lake Issyk-Kul. Lake Issyk-Kul which is set amongst the central Tian Shan mountain range is 170km long by 70 km across and is supposedly the second largest Alpine lake in the world after Lake Titicaca. During Soviet times, several health spa towns sprang up along the lake's shore and the lake is reputed to be one of Kyrgyzstan's premier tourist destinations because of the spa towns, and also because of surrounding mountains which are said to have some wonderful trekking opportunities. The journey from Bishkek to Karakol took most of ... read more

Ok, so I'm not actually in Issyk Kul, but it is the only place in Kyrgyzstan that the Travelblog lists, I felt like I should list it as where I am at least once. And I was there for 9 days and I would have added to the blog had I not been in the least frequented area of Issyk Kul, the very small town of Tamchy. It was probably chosen as the place for the American School camp because it is much cheaper than any other town on the lake. It's beautiful! It's somewhere over 6000 feet above sea level and surrounded by mountains. Unfortunately I didn't get out and about very much. I was teaching English at the camp for two hours every morning, and then spent time at the beach or watching a ... read more

We are staying at homestays again and we got divided up into three, after dinner we were serenaded with local music by our gracious hosts, beautiful music and skillful playing. I bought a quilt carpet at the felt factory we went to , the lady demonstrated how to make the felt rugs as well and she made one whose design is the likeness of Gisele our truck. We had a quick lunch afterwards and then shopped for dinner cooking, we drove not far and we reached our camp site on the shores of Issyk Kol, it's a big lake and we will camp on different areas of it as we got around in a loop til we hit Bishkek in a couple days. Our campsite was gorgeous, i cooked the adobo but not really successful. It ... read more

The exact date doesn't really matter, so I'll leave it at today's date - this is just a little post to say hello, everyone. :) Sometime in August 2001, in Kyrgyzstan, we watched a yurt being built for us to sleep in, in an orchard near Lake Yssyk-Kol. When it was finished, the sun was low in the sky ... so I could make this little self portrait. ... read more
