Let it be known, Kyrgyzstan is about scenery, and with that I mean scenery of epic proportions. Now that I have clarified that point, all it would really take is a trip to the Ala Archa national park to illustrate the point indicatively. On a day out with a hired driver, those 'epic proportions' referred to were also present in this day out's first port of call, the Dordoi bazaar market, situated 6km north of Bishkek. This market is dubbed the largest of its kind in Central Asia, and just has to be experienced to be believed. In terms of size, we are talking one kilometre of market stalls, end to end, and the main bulk of the market's substance here consists of one-on-top-of-the-other Chinese cargo container crates, used for storage and as a means of ... read more

Ala-Archa National Park, Kyrgyzstan - 14thJuly 2012 – mile 10.229 Our legs are in shock – they have been asked to do some walking, they are not used to a whole day without the motorbike to carry them round! Ala-Archa is a spectacular canyon only 40km south of Bishkek in the Tien Shen mountains. To be fair most of Kyrgyzstan is spectacular – 97% of it is covered in mountains and the tallest peaks of the old USSR are found here. We're only walking up small peaks. Its very pleasant climbing up through the spruce and juniper woods, past all the wild flowers. Every now and then we pop out of the wood and get views of the steep sided mountains surrounding us with their snowy peaks and glaciers. If you're a real ruffty-tuffty you can ... read more

It was a public holiday for the Kyrgyzstan Independence Day. We left Bishkek for the Ala Archa National Park. It was strange not having the Brits on the truck but we collected 10 new people and the truck was full. Dave (driver) had trouble with his Turkistan Visa. My Uzbek Letter of Invitation had not arrived (I offered to write one!) but I couldn't do anything by staying. Dave stayed and the rest of us headed out camping. Ala Archa is a beautiful spot not far from Bishkek. A lot of locals were there due to the holidays. We set up camp and then headed up onto the glacier for some walking. We were over 3000m so walking was hard work - but it was a beautiful place (photos will be coming). We did a 6hr ... read more

I've just had a wonderful day in the mountains. My feet have just had a really shit day in the mountains and hate me. Lots of sun, again. Lots of majestic scenery, again. No horses though. And no people, which was the bit I liked best. I was absolutely and totally alone for about 8 hours in the most amazing landscape. Bliss. Just as well really, because there was no-one there to hear me yell "fucking hell fuck fuck fuck" repeatedly while I was fording a raging torrent of a stream of fresh meltwater, barefoot. Did my feet ever hurt when the blood finally got back to them... That's why my feet hate me, that and 25Km of walking and scrambling.... read more

Our next adventure was about 35 km from Bishkek... climbing in Ala Archa. Because our previous unsupported trek was six days, we ate most of the food we brought with us. So this time... we took up the kitchen sink, hiring a porter to help carry up our things. We planned to stay for seven days and climb both rock and alpine routes , so there was a lot of food and gear. Toby and Scott, new friends we met through the Alpine Fund (non-profit organization that takes kids climbing) came with us - so it was a little bit of a party. The hike in was about 5 hours of up, up, up. Packs were heavy, but eventually, all of our stuff arrived at the Ratsek Hut, where there's a little tent city, friendly Russians, ... read more
