July 5 This morning, we slept in until close to 9 when the owner came to our door trying to get us out of the building. I have yet to meat a Japanese person who will be direct with you. Seigo was the closest I’ve come to seeing someone be direct, and I believe that is because he is just from a younger generation. I wanted to see Kurashika, which I hadn’t seen yet, and Max was headed back east so we took the same train. We talked for a bit, exchanged contact info, and we both told each other to look the other up if we were ever in their neck of the woods. When I first met Max, I actually found him a bit annoying, but we actually became really quick friends. It’s a ... read more

Happy belated Canada Day!!!!! On Sunday I invited some of my Japanese friends over to celebrate Canada Day. It´s funny how being in another country for an extended period of time can bring out the patriotic side of someone. When I am in Canada, it feels like any other day except I have the day off from work and there are some fireworks in the sky at night. Not so this year, in the week leading up to Canada Day I found myself gabbing away to myself to my classes about Canada and Canadian culture, thankfully Japanese students are so polite they let me yammer away. I think most they were amazed that a country that has the second largest land mass in the world is only inhabited by 33 million people while their country is ... read more

Oh, Japan. It was incredibly anti-climatic arriving today. My Japanese is definitely lacking, but I can still get around. And I note that I forgot an umbrella during tsuyu (rainy season). How silly of me. I’m too tired to note anything else. The Japanese are a silly people, much like Americans are silly people. They are entranced by the fact that I am a twin. When Adachi introduced me to the teachers at Hekinan school, he introduced me as the new teacher, from America, who was a twin. Anytime anyone finds out, their eyes widen and they are very interested. Also, at the moment the World Cup is going on, and even though Japan is out of the running, most people seem to follow it. I was watching TV the other day, and they had a ... read more

On Danny's 4th day here, which also happened to be July 4th - although not really a big deal here in Japan, we went to Asakusa. Asakusa is known for its famous Kaminarimon Gate, as well as it's beautiful temple and 5-storey pagoda. Unfortunately though, when we visited the temple and got our fortunes this time, Danny and I had bad fortunes, but Larry had "best fortune" twice in a row!! NOT FAIR! After visiting Asakusa's history, we decided to search for another conveyor-belt sushi restaurant, because Danny could just not get enough of it! Well, after a few phone calls to the Japanese girls that Larry works with and many attempts at asking the locals on the streets, we finally found a place. A good place too....In fact, one of the plates that Larry tried ... read more

July 4 Max wanted to tag along sightseeing with me for a day, but didn’t want to go to Kurashika since he had been there a few years back. Instead, we traveled to Takahashi with intentions to spend the night. When we arrived in Takahashi (which actually translates to tall bridge), we walked into the travel’s info stand that was part of the train station. Apparently, the youth hostel, which was marked in my travel book, didn’t actually exist. The guy at the desk even called the number my book listed although it just turned out to be a regular, overpriced hotel. The cheapest we could have stayed there would about been around $60, and neither of us really wanted to fork over that much cash. We just decided to finish sightseeing in takahashi, take the ... read more

July 3 Today I’m okayama. Tomorrow, I’m traveling to Takahashi before Kurashika. Beyond that, there is not change in my schedule. So I opted out of taking the bullet train this morning because of how expensive it was. About twice as expensive as taking the local express train, which takes about 3-4 times as long. So I was on the train this morning for about 3+ hours when it really shouldn’t have taken nearly that long. O well. Also, the express train was running about an hour late. This is the first time I’ve seen any train in japan be more than 1 min late. According to my guide book, in Okayama, there is a third best public garden in all of japan. The Korakuen. After exploring the gardens, I decided to buy a ice cream ... read more

Monday 7/3/06 Wow, What a weekend, well, Saturday actually…!!! The day started at 10am when everyone met up at Mos Burger in Gifu station. Our group for the day was me, Charlene, her friend Helen, Mike and Asai. It was so much fun! Everyone rented bikes from this little place next to the station so we could tour Gifu. Well, everyone except me that is, because I had one : ) We spent the next three hours seeing loads of stuff around Gifu, some that Mike had shown me before, and some that he hadn’t. Mainly the tour consisted of a few temples, some really pretty parks (Gifu Koen being the main one), the river, and Gifu’s famous daibutsu--which is this giant Buddha statue. Getting to see all the temples was great and at one of ... read more

Well, the quarter had finally begun to wrap up - it seems that the SCTI midterm season is virtually contiguous with finals season. Which is regretful, because it lumps virtually all of the graded assignments into a few super-stressful weeks. Which, for me, are over with my last final (EE) having just wrapped up on Tuesday. Finally! After that, I have three intense days of summer vacation, followed by moving into my new apartment (!), followed by going to work on this upcoming Monday. And thus will begin the summer. Hardly anything of note has happened in the last few weeks: I worked hard, got a lot done, learned some academic stuff, but had very little time to party. I gave a presentation on J-Pop as my final presentation for Japanese class, and wrote a 1200-character ... read more

July 2 Today I spent my day exploring more of Kobe. It started off with me sleeping in. I know that I shouldn’t be sleeping in when I’m backpacking across Japan, but it was one of the few opportunities that I had. I’m also still catching up on sleep from studying abroad. Slept in, read my fiction book for a bit before getting up. I’ve only been reading my fiction book before getting up and right before going to sleep. Any other down time is spent studying out of my grammar book, but I don’t really have much down time to begin with. It’s 9:30pm now so I’ll probably study and bit, read my fiction book, and go to sleep. Tomorrow I’m headed for Okayama. In Okayama there is supposed to be a really cool garden ... read more
