July 6&7 So I did what I was expecting I was going to do. I rushed through the past two cities, Fukuyama and Onomichi, and wound up in Hiroshima last night. I went to Onomichi instead of Tomonoura because there was no rail line going to Tomonoura, just some obscure bus line that I honestly didn’t feel like messing with. Since I was kinda swinging through both cities pretty quickly, I only visited a history museum and park in Fukuyama, and a pretty extensive park in Onomichi. I was forced to take a bus at one point during the trip yesterday because there had been an accident, not really sure how bad, on one of the train lines. The bus system proved to be really difficult since there were no instructions in English, and they used ... read more

Tokyo...impossible to describe in one word! Exciting, bustling, bright, loud, serene, traditional...12.2 million people! It is described as city that everyone must see once in their lifetime. I agree! Those of you who know me well, generally know that I'm not a big fan of large cities. I find them intimidating and overwhelming, an assault on your senses and peace of mind. However, I had a fair idea of what I was in for before I visited Tokyo. When I first arrived in Japan last August, I spent three days in one of the busiest areas of Tokyo, Shinjuku, in a fancy hotel, attending seminars for my new job of teaching English as a Foreign Language to high school students. Really, the only glimpses of the city I saw were when I went out for dinner ... read more

06/7/4 Happy Independence Day!! One of the teachers from Britain surprised me while I was eating lunch to congratulate me, and I had been surrounded by quiet (in the kitchen) for so long that I about jumped out of my skin. Charming guy, really. From Nottingham. I have to say, not celebrating the fourth didn't bother me a bit. Mainly because I never got really excited about it to begin with. I saw a Japanese guy wearing a beret the other day!!! It was so funny. His facial structure was very similar to someone else who used to wear a beret, too. If his skin tone hadn’t been so decidedly Japanese I’d have done a doubletake. But seriously, you don’t usually see things like berets. American culture is quite admired here, but French culture is ... read more

The past couple of weekends have been so busy - so busy in fact I'm separating our shenanigans into two blog entries. The start of June was very quiet. Quiet in the sense we didn't get up to much, but not quiet at home because we both came down with a horrible chest infection and the flu. There was nothing but coughing, sneezing and wheezing coming from our house for about 3 weeks. But we are pleased to announce that we are finally better and hope to stay that way for long time. (Note to future travellers to Japan - medication here is a LOT weaker than at home, so come prepared!) Our friend Matt from Australia has been out in Japan with his Japanese wife, Mie for the past couple of weeks. He came out ... read more

Ishizuchi Mountain was my second mountain climb in Japan. It is the tallest mountain in Shikoku (the central-south main island of Japan), at 1982 meters. It is a holy mountain, as climbed by many Japanese as a religious pilgramage. Our group of 20 people spent 24 hours together...we climbed, we got wet, we prayed and we partied. The invitation for the climb came from my iaido (martial art) teacher. He and his friends were doing the climb, and asked our class to join them. Dana, Daniel and I tagged along, and I'm really happy that we did. We met at 10:30p.m. on Friday night. We drove on a bus until about 3a.m., when we arrived at the bottom of the mountain. We took a ropeway at 3:30a.m. about half way up, where we also got dressed ... read more

I had such a good day today I wanted to write about it before too many details escape me. I recently read about some rural Japanese towns not far from Kobe which are famous for the pottery that is produced in small studios by local craftspeople. So after consulting 3 different sources and getting 3 different sets of directs I decided to visit one of the commmuities, Aino. To tell you the truth I´m not sure if the towns named Aino or just the local train station that I got off at, but nevertheless they make pottery there so I know I was in the right place. A scenic 1.5 train ride from Kobe, I found myself literally in the middlle of nowhere, with just fice fields as far as the eye could see, but I ... read more

Thursday 7/6/06 Wow. What a day, what a night! Ok so yesterday was the release of the 2nd to last chapter of fruits basket!!! Ahhhh!!! However, all my attempts at getting to a bookstore failed!! The store near me was closed in the morning, and then, at lunch, our classes ran late so I barely had enough time to get something to eat before the bell rang. (In Japan even offices run on bells) Then, after work was the welcome party for all the interns. There were maybe 20 of us there and it was AWESOME!!! Hayakawa san arranged the whole thing. It was at this great Izakaya in downtown Gifu. The drinks were superb and the food was fantastic. I drank a teensy bit too much and was slightly tipsy by the time dinner was ... read more

I have a few hours to kill, now, so I thought I’d do a post. Before I left Stanford, a lovely and brilliant lady by the name of Killeen Hanson mentioned that I should occasionally post some of the content in my temp file. This file, as I have mentioned to some of you, acts more as a semi-permanent repository for clipboard data than anything else, but often records my life to some extent. I was browsing through it the other day, and rediscovered a half-finished poem I had written when I finally could throw out my HATEFUL old Gateway computer. If you know me, you've probably heard me rant about this computer or seen the demonic rituals I was forced to engage in to convince the Dark Spirits to allow a boot-up. Entitled "Extempore Effusion ... read more
