In 1603, a Tokugawa shogunate (military dictatorship) ushered in a long period of isolation from foreign influence in order to secure its power. For 250 years this policy enabled Japan to enjoy stability and a flowering of its indigenous culture. Following the Treaty of Kanagawa with the United States in 1854, Japan opened its ports and began to intensively modernize and industrialize. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Japan became a regional power that was able to defeat the forces of both China and Russia. It occupied Korea, Formosa (Taiwan), and southern Sakhalin Island. In 1933 Japan occupied Manchuria and in 1937 it launched a full-scale invasion of China. Japan attacked US forces in 1941 - triggering America's entry into World War II - and soon occupied much of East and Southeast Asia. After its defeat in World War II, Japan recovered to become an economic power and a staunch ally of the US. While the emperor retains his throne as a symbol of national unity, actual power rests in networks of powerful politicians, bureaucrats, and business executives. The economy experienced a major slowdown starting in the 1990s following three decades of unprecedented growth, but Japan still remains a major economic power, both in Asia and globally. In 2005, Japan began a two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. To be updated

From one Atomic bomb devastated city to another! We caught the train to Hiroshima and, as in Nagaski, we arrived around midday so left the bags at the Dormy Hotel and headed off to the Peace Park less than five minutes walk away. Although we visited Hiroshima two years ago, and had spent time exploring the Peace Park area, it's somewhere you almost feel drawn to. The Hiroshima Peace Park, a large park in the centre of the city, consists of the A-Bomb Dome, Childrens Peace Monument, Rest House, Peace Memorial Museum, International Conference Centre, National Peace Memorial Hall, Memorial [View Full Entry]

Nikko in the rain Asia » Japan » Tochigi » Nikko
Let’s go..Nikko !! Leaving the buzz of Tokyo we travelled two hours North of Tokyo to Nikko. Using my flash JR pass (Japanese Rail pass) for the first time, we boarded the super fast bullet train. I have been on trains, fast ones, in Europe. But I have never been on a bullet train. Like all train tickets, the carriage number is printed on it, but unlike most places the carriage number is also clearly labelled on the ground. The platform even has a box so you can line up, so when it comes you can hop on the train without [View Full Entry]

Day 10 Arriving early on the 8am shinkansen (2 hours) from Kyoto, we went straight to yet another K's House where we had a flash double room this time, with our own bathroom, TV, A/C and huge bed! After dropping our bags off we headed straight to the Green Arena for the Sumo Tournament. The performances included displays of comic sumo and traditional sumo songfests in addition to the normal sumo bouts. There were some BIG boys there...over 2m tall and over 200Kgs...we both got photos with a couple of them! It was really interesting to watch and the crowd was [View Full Entry]

When our train arrived at Nagasaki station the only bit of history we knew about the place was that the second atomic bomb was detonated there on 9 August 1945. At the time I was two months short of my second birthday and Kev was a babe in arms at not quite six months old. Now that we are about to leave we know a lot more about this fascinating city. Arriving at our hotel around midday, since our room would'nt be ready until 3pm, we left the bags there and headed off to discover a little bit of Nagasaki. It [View Full Entry]

Mount Kōya - Temple stay Asia » Japan » Wakayama » Koyasan
Shukubo experiences at Mount Koya, or Kōya-san (高野山), have been described in this forum more often, but I enjoyed my stay so much that I feel obliged to describe my own experience. The Okunoin Cemetery, Kongobuji Temple with the Banryutei rock garden and the area around the Konpon Daitō which make up the main sites in Mt Koya all are fabulous and have all well deserved entries in this forum and therefore I want to focus mainly on our temple lodging, or shukubo, experience. We had booked the Sanboin shukubo which has a 1200-year history via [url=http://www.sanb [View Full Entry]

Magome-Tsumago Pass Hike Asia » Japan » Mie
In Gifu Prefecture there is an old walking trail that connects the two towns of Magome and Tsumago. My school took all the first year students on a class trip there today and I got to go with! It was a perfect day for hiking - a bit cool but not too hot and SUNNY! The hike itself was 8 kms long, most of it uphill, but it was totally worth it! The scenery was beautiful and it was a really good opportunity to talk to my students outside of class. I even ended up making 'friends' with students from a [View Full Entry]

Day 6/7/8
A few hours on the train north to Nagano where the 1998 Winter Olympics were then another hour on a private train and we landed in rainy Yudanaka. It is a sleepy little town, but beautiful! We stayed at the Shimaya Ryokan which was a traditional family run hotel with it's own onsen. Our room was traditional with tatami mat floors and rice paper walls. It's all quite low and Chris was banging his head on the ceiling every few minutes. Because it was raining when we arrived we chilled in our room and then went for dinner at [View Full Entry]

Day 8 - Temples, Shrines, Temples, Shrines... Last night we checked into K's House Kyoto which is close to the train station in the south side of Kyoto. We dropped our bags off and headed to down town Kyoto and walked millions of miles up and down streets of restaurants, stalls and shops. Up early as usual with a big day planned. We first headed down to Kyoto station and got a train to Fushimi Inari-taisha Shire with their 4km of red tori gates. "The magical, seemingly unending path of over 5000 vibrant orange torii gates that wind through hills behind [View Full Entry]

My Summary of Japan.. Asia » Japan » Tokyo
For those of you who would ever want to visit Japan, I'm just going to let you know now that it's really not as scary and overwhelming as you think it is. Obviously the culture change is a bit to take in at first, but like any place once you settle down and know whats what, it's pretty simple to deal with! Aside from the fact the place itself is just eyeopening incredible, the people themselves make this place pretty damn special. The fact you look different from everyone else is NO issue. At first it's kind of intimidating and you [View Full Entry]
