Although famous for being an American sport, baseball is actually quite popular in Japan, surpassing even soccer. As such, there are many professional baseball teams in the capital, including the Yomiuri Giants who boast the most impressive arena in the city. One of the best ways to experience the Japanese love for baseball is to catch a game at the Tokyo Dome. Fans come out in large numbers and go into a frenzy when a player hits a home run, culminating in a festive atmosphere worth being part of. The Giants are the oldest (12-26-34) professional sports team in Japan. Being a Giants fan since they moved from NY to San Francisco, I must see the Tokyo version of the Giants at the Tokyo Dome. I arranged for tickets, delivered to our hotel front desk for ... read more

You would think drinking in a bar in Japan would be roughly similar to drinking in any bar around the world. Not so, according to the experts, of which I am not. But I saw this list and discussion and decided to investigate further. Thanks to CNN Travel and Nick Coldicott for these insights. Here they are: Don't talk to other guests. In my case, it would be rather difficult, since my knowledge of Japanese is limited to thank you (arigato), and good-bye (sayonara). 2. Acknowledge the bartender. He is your friend... read more

Left the remote Ryokan early this morning whilst the clouds still covered the peaks for best coffee so far by the Iya Valley, it came with a fluffy pancake and trying to persuade the birds to feed from our hands. Explored the rope bridge, falls etc before the most stressful drive ever along the single track road full of switch backs, rock falls and sheer drops. That cube shaped car was a challenge to drive, both in the mountains and other motorways, I’m not a fan of a Seat Smile. Naruto whirlpool’s weren’t quite swirling before we headed to Kobe and a cancelled Shinkansen due to an earthquake meant we were in the commuter train to Kyoto. Bit of a shock to be back in a city but we’re staying in another Ryokan in quiet streets ... read more

Here are some rather unknown things about TravelNoire: Japan Has Over 6,000 Islands-but the majority of the population lives on four islands, Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku. 40% of Publications Sold in Japan Are Manga-a world wide phenomenon, comic book story telling has become big business. Anime Was Once Used as War Propaganda-during WW2, anime was used to send messages, boost morale, and promote nationalistic sentiments. Nakizumo Crying Baby Festival Is a Yearly Tradition-can you believe sumo wrestlers compete to make babies cry? They say "crying babies grow" and the loudest crying baby is declared the winner. Savoteur: There is culture shock, and then there is culture shock. Many travelers confess that adventures in European countries don’t scratch their itch of wanting to feel truly in a different world. Luckily, Tokyo, Japan, fits that bill quite nicely. From the neon lights to the history to the bizarre examples of modern technology, a trip to Tokyo is genuinely one-of-a-kind, making it a no-brainer place to visit for two weeks. Yes, I agree with Saboteur, Europe is too much like the US. After all, our country is a reflection of Europe, at least in its origin and founders. Japan, and countries in the Asian corner of the world present a very different culture, cuisine, and people. And I just realized most of the travel websites are quite Euro-centric. Just a guess on my part, but ... read more

Early exit from Matsuyama in our cube shaped hire car, teen navigating, I’m driving like an old lady, gah automatics. We can’t get Bluetooth to work so local fm radio it is and not dissimilar to the pirate stations of SE London. Great views over the Seto sea and pals who have just started the same bike ride before we headed into the mountains and a day white water rafting with Happy Raft in Otoyo. Staying a night higher up in the mountains and it’s now totally dark outside, shame that there is too much cloud to see the stars. Mushrooms gifted from the grand father next door. 😋... read more

I am headed to Japan because it is my mother country. It was home to both sets of my grandparents, who came to the US at the end of 1800s and beginning of the 1900s. I am going to show my best buddy, Mr. Mike around my home country. We will focus on food, Michaelin stars, hole in the wall joints and big city walks, and less on temples and museums. From the MoneyFesto: Japan really has the best of both worlds, and its juxtaposition is what entices travelers in the first place. You see, Japan not only has a rich cultural heritage and unique traditions, with ancient temples, shrines, and tea ceremonies for visitors to learn all about. But Japan also has cutting-edge technology and futuristic cityscapes like no other place on the planet. url=https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fsamplingamerica.com%2F10-foreign-cities-that-feel-like-america%2F&data=05%7C ... read more

Japan, specifically Tokyo, has the best food and restaurants in the world, seriously. Tokyo has 226 Michelin star restaurants…and the second best city, Paris, has just 96. I firmly believe it is impossible to have a bad dining experience in Japan…I ate at an obscene amount of restaurants while I was in Japan and only one was not remarkable in the food department. (And that was the evening with a Geisha dinner in Kyoto.) And while restaurants and bars are nice and all…the street food is also mind-blowingly good! I honestly almost liked eating street food better. There were so many delicious options. We decided to have at least one Michelin dinner in Tokyo. I chose Fushkino in Shinjuku. First, I had to apply for a reservation, and pay a booking fee that will not be ... read more

Already I’m behind, so many pictures and so much we’ve seen. I’ll do a photo dump of the rest of the Shimanami Kaido and maybe add some more coherent words later. As expected, Stan hasn’t shown any inclination to do this so it’s just my waffling. Suffice to say we have loved the two days doing this ride, staying at WAKKA was just amazing, we’re slightly obsessed by bridges and the cycling infrastructure is brilliantly done. Yes we did use e-bikes but it’s a holiday thought I’d love to bring my trusty Orange on this ride the on ramps can be pretty steep as we easily overtook the Lycra gang but they catch us back on the downhills and straights. Now in Matsuyama where we have rain so taking it easy today. ... read more
