Utsunomiya, vibrant, sensual and quite simply just rammed full of gyōza! Embedded between a number of swanky café’s and bars dotted around town you’ll find a number of gyōza joints offering up various adaptation’s of the Chinese dumpling. Legend has it that a number of Japanese soldiers during WWII obtained Chinese dumpling recipes whilst occupying Manchuria, upon returning home to Utsunomiya they set about putting these recipes into commercial effect, one thing lead to another and then all of a sudden there were all sorts of recipes flying about the city, a gyōza boom was born, of which now has essentially typecast Utsunomiya as the best place in Japan for gyōza! People flee from all corners of Japan to smash these regional delicacies into their faces. Oh, and the things they do to a gyōza in ... read more

This is my old trip pictures when I went to Japan. To Nikko, you can easily take a train from Utsunomiya, about 40 min and you can just keep sitting until the Nikko. There was a restroom inside the train. There were shuttle buses going around the city, or you can walk 20-30 min to the Toshogu shrines from the station. I saw lots of free water section. There was a ticket office, actually the ticket was only for Toshogu and I had to buy another tickets for different places. It costed about 3,000yen total I think.... read more

Well, this will be the last blog for this trip. I am sitting in my hotel in Tokyo waiting for the worst effects of Typhoon Wipha to pass before heading to the airport and (hopefully) catching my flight home to Sydney. On Tuesday I headed off to the World Heritage site of Nikko. I incorrectly thought that the journey from Nagano to Tokyo was going to be my last trip on the shinkansen, but it turns out that the quickest way to Nikko using the rail pass involved a couple more. It was interesting to see that the shinkansens I was catching were actually 2 connected to each other, which I hadn’t seen before. I guess they split somewhere further up the line. I arrived at Nikko and headed to the tourist information first, just up ... read more

Up at 6AM to ensure the departure and make the first leg of our way to Nikko from Sado Island. Our travel was like this: Bus,Bus,Bus,Jetfoil,Taxi,Bullet Train,Bullet Train, Train, Taxi, all before 5PM. Ready to go and we waited for the bus at 7:40 AM Sunday. 7:42 AM No bus. Panic... because we have 20 minutes to catch the next bus. We rush back to the Ryokan and sure enough the lady there knew exactly what to do. We hopped into her minivan and off we went to the next bus. We made it with 3 minutes to spare. This bus arrived. Whew. The rest of the travel was punctual by all modes of transportation and we arrived at our last leg by 4PM and were about to get into the Taxi when a bus turned ... read more

Today I visited a temple in Nikko. Luckily they finished renovating it before I got here so I could see it. Inside the temple were many beautiful works of arts. I think I need a giant gold statue like the ones inside. ... read more

We arrived into Nikko from Tokyo on a Shinkansen (bullet train) and immediately noted the change in temperature to the city. We took a short walk up the hill to the other station where the info office and bus ticket office is (a place to get maps and an idea of what to do). We dropped our bags off at the nikko park lodge (number 2) which we first of all couldn't find but it was actually directly opposite the main station entrance. This is directly related to the other Nikko Park Lodge hostel in the mountains where the owner will do a free shuttle pick up and drop off to in morning and evening. They were very accommodating here and gave us maps and directions to the shrine area of Nikko. Instead of paying for ... read more

...Changing trains at Utsunomiya for a more sedate ride to Nikko, we were looking forward to visiting this World Heritage area. We weren't sure what to expect but many people travel to this area for a day or two because of the magnficent shrines and temples. Mountains loomed in the distance, and as the little train rounded a corner about 50 trainspotters with telephoto lenses set up on tripods broke out in a frenzy. Never mind the magnificent scenery behind them. Alighting at the station, it was a fair walk up to our accommodation and after consulting with a helpful elderly man, we decided to check in and then find medical help. Suffice to say that Dean wasn't happy, Eleanor was tired and my ear felt like it was about to explode so the walk up ... read more

Saturday, March 17, 2012 Today is St, Patrick’s day in the US. We have not been home for St. Patty’s day in years, always been traveling. We are scheduled to visit Nikko today. This is about a two hour train ride. Cindy and Jenny slept in today, almost 8:00 am before they woke up. I got Michael up because he wanted to work out. Today was the only rainy day of our trip. It was light, but annoying and very cold. After a very quick breakfast (not as good as the Osaka Hilton), we reserved a train to Nikko. We had to take two trains, a JR rail and then a local train. This city is a fairly small and easy to walk around. We did not arrive until 1:30 pm, the site we ... read more
