It continued to snow today. The locals don't seem to share the same admiration for the snow as we do. They were eager to get rid of it- our neighbours were awake before us, shovelling snow out of their driveways and wiping it off their car windscreens. We set out for Edomura (Edo Wonderland) this morning, but Yoshiku stop us in our tracks. She insisted on driving us to the train station to catch the shuttle bus. Oh Yoshiku, for a Bed and Breakfast hostess she really does go above and beyond. We arrived at the station 12 minutes after the last train. We were happy to wait, but Yoshiku insisted on driving us the whole way to the historical theme park. I should point out that it was a 30 minute drive completely out of ... read more

On our first morning in Nikko we awoke to sight of sheets of pure, white snow. Tiny, delicate, flakes of the the stuff were falling everywhere. We had no choice but to go outside and experience it for ourselves. We had to touch it, stomp on it, throw it! It was magical! It had turned the already beautiful, small city into a sparkling wonderland. Any more attempts to describe it will not do it justice, nor will the photos I put up. We decided to head out and explore this snow-encrusted city. We headed for the hills to see a collection of shrines and temples. Our amazing host Yoshiku had warned us it would be hilly- she wasn't wrong. There were many steps and steep inclines to get to the top of Toshogu Shrine. We didn't ... read more

Well, we know and we can tell you a fair bit after visiting the Osaka Science Museum. The Osaka Science Museum is a four-floor building filled with wonderment and fun. We were immediately impressed when we found 'Cubekon'- a robot that solves Rubix cubes. It is in this museum that you can interact and learn about astronomy, technology, geology, chemistry, physics and biology. We looked through old astronomy equipment, played with circuits and sniffed fragrances (including gross pizza and takoyaki). One of the best floors was the second floor, called: 'Science is fun'. We completed a series of marble runs and played strange musical instruments. James enjoyed checking himself out in the hall of mirrors. After a morning of exploring we went to the science show. The theme was 'static electricity'. This topic could really make ... read more

It's not that I haven't been doing anything or traveling - on the contrary, I've been all over the place these past 8 months. The problem is instead that I have hit a point in my time abroad, the phase I once found called the "dissonance" phase, and for those at this phase, there are two possible trajectories: assimilation or departure. Either the person assimilates completely and assumes the societal values and norms, or they do not, unable to merge their own beliefs and moral code with that of the new culture. It's not much of a secret which path I will take. Japan, as an experience, has changed me more in the past 4 years than almost anything else in my life has changed me. It's not bad - it's amazing. I have grown and ... read more

Like usual, I picked an early train to maximize my touring time. It takes three hours to get to Nikko, my destination for today. I debated last night not going and staying in Tokyo because of the travel time, but so many guide books and blogs recommended it, I decided to still go. I had to switch trains in Tokyo to catch a bullet train out. I had to switch again to get a local train out to Nikko (it's a small town part way up a mountain). On that train I made a new friends. His name was Rob and he was in Tokyo from Maryland for work, (something to do with bio engineering). He had a three day weekend (I'm thinking he works with the government as a contractor and gets memorial day off ... read more

Spending our first 5 days in Tokyo, we decided to allocate 2 of these days to sightseeing outside Tokyo itself and chose Nikko and Lake Kawaguchiko (for Mount Fuji). Part 1 – Nikko…UNESCO World Heritage site and lots of renovations! After stopping off at 7-11 to pick up some croissants and jam for the train ride, we headed to Asakusa station. We were a little disappointed that the better value World Heritage Pass had been discontinued, so had to buy a 2 Day Nikko Pass (issued by the Tobu Railway) which includes the round trip train journey and bus rides around Nikko. The lady in the ticket office spoke excellent English, gave us a whizz-bang guide to Nikko and said the next train was leaving in 3 minutes…off you go! Knowing how punctual Japanese trains are, ... read more

Nasu to Nasu-dake A thin layer of snow had settled over night giving me the perfect excuse in which to build some snowmen. I hated how cold it was in the mountains yet the sight of my snowmen over breakfast gave me some warmth and encouragement. The 8km climb up to Yumoto Park today from my guesthouse was a relatively gruelling uphill ascent. Thankfully I was travelling light with my luggage remaining at my guesthouse. My uphill monologue normally going a little something like this: ‘F*&king s%$%"y w^&k, p*ss, c*&t b**%%$k m£$f, why the f*%k am I doing this? What kind of mug am I?’ And that’s even a toned down version as not to offend anyone’s Mum. But it also has to be said that I quite often offend myself with the physical assault of ... read more

Approaching Nasu should have been a straight forward affair. I made sure it wasn’t though and spiced things up by taking a country road that would essentially lead on for an eternity and further on into oblivion. Things always get a little nervy when you haven’t seen a road sign for a town for at least an hour, the only sign I did come across was a ‘BEWARE BEARS’ sign and a picture of an angry bear revealing his flesh rippingly spiteful gnashers, just to emphasize the fact that bears have the integral power to be nasty bastards. Statistically however it is most commonly old ladies that get eaten by bears when their out in the woods pottering about looking for mountain veg for their supper. I should imagine that they taste a little overly ripe ... read more

I awoke the following rainy day having had an odd dream, to clean my bicycle chain I use a toothbrush, a very oily toothbrush I might add. In the ethereal realm and against the science of hygiene it appeared to be perfectly acceptable for me to use this toothbrush in order to clean my teeth. I do worry about my sub-conscience sometimes and upon waking I checked my teeth. As a British standard, horrible, yet not oily. It was just a dream, I was thankful. As it was chucking it down I re-created a scene from 7 years previously by having a stroll down to Kanmangafuchi Abyss. An eerie, secluded gorge just outside of town formed many years ago by the eruption of nearby Mt. Nantai. A mood lingers in the air as a row of ... read more

The ascent up to Nikko was a steady one, yet despite all the training over the past week or so I found it surprisingly draining. I think every now and then the body just needs to recharge, all the physical exertion obviously taking its toll, which is exactly what I planned to do upon arrival at my hostel in Nikko, recharge. I’d been to Nikko some 7 years ago as part of a 6 month tour of Eastern Asia, and as I pulled into town it still all seemed so very familiar, like it was only yesterday that I was here. The central bus station in the town square, its perimeter aligned with souvenir shops and an Indian restaurant where I and a friend once dived into one evening to escape a sudden downpour. A succession ... read more
