This blog entry is a whole bunch of conversations I've had over the past week with various Japanese people. I have a really, really small vocabulary (100 words max) and I'm not at all good at putting them in sentences, but I do love the language and do try whenever I can, which isn't often, being forbidden to speak it at work and living with a fluent English speaker who studies translation. My favourite person to speak to is Sanaes mum because she speaks Japanese, I speak English and we understand each other perfectly. I have no idea how, but I've picked up most of my Japanese from her by having these conversations. Note: Where it says Dah dah dah is shorthand for they were speaking Japanese and I have no idea what it was about ... read more

I'm currently sharing a small fold out lounge with a lovely german. Her name is Kessy and you may remember her from previous adventures such as karaoke, the 6 floor sex shop and pachinko. Poor old Kess was done over by the language school closing early and needed accommodation for a week so she moved in last saturday and I have been exhausted ever since because with her, Sanae and myself in the one room it's like a never ending sleep-over and constant parade of funness. Happy Times. I'm not sure if it's because of the expansion of mine and Sanaes small family at home or the fact that my afternoon class of 3 year olds leapt on me at one point in a massive sqiggling cuddling frenzy (I know it's unprofessional to even let that ... read more

You may remember I made a sudden life changing decision last Friday after being accosted on the train by a pervert out for a cheap thrill. Well, not one to sit quietly by, I strode into the hairdressers bright and early Saturday afternoon (Well, i had to sleep in) and demanded that Fuse (Sanaes wonderful hairdresser) turn me Japanese. He questioned my sincerity by coolly raising one eyebrow in the mirror (I just love hairdressers) and I rebutted his skeptical gaze with a look of my own. "OK" he sighed "How dark do you want to go" What the hell I thought. And then I said the words I always, always say to hairdressers and always, always regret. "Oh, do whatever you like" Why do I give these creative types full license to do whatever they ... read more

7:00am - Wake up. Reset my alarm for 7.30 7:30am - Again with the bloody alarm, hit the snooze button 7:35am - Hit snooze button again 7:40am - ... and again 7:45am - Oh god I'm going to be late! Run to the shower 8:00am - Leave the house and run to the station 8:10am - Train arrives and is completely packed without a spare inch to move. I turn my back on the full carriage and force my way in moments before another ten people turn their backs on me and push me backwards into the sea of breathing suits behind me. It's very hot and everyone is sweating on everyone else. Gross. 8.23am - Ha! My station! I love living so close to work. I shove my way through the masses and get violently ... read more

I saw the greatest thing today. I left work at the usual time and plodded through the streets to the station. I was getting my travelcard out of my bag when a sound caught my ears. It was the beatles "Love me Do" which is not the usual sound of Kawaguchi station. I turned around, and there to the side of the station, in full view of hundreds of people was a suited up business man and a small CD player grooving away to the beatles. He wasn't even busking, he was just passing his lunch hour by playing air guitar at the train station. Small things like this are why I love Japan, and this man, this air guitar businessman of Kawaguchi is the inspiration behind my blog today. Top Five Reasons Why I love ... read more

It's a day for firsts for me today. - I was in my first ever typhoon - I received my first ever pay check in yen (If all those zeros had a dollar sign in front of them, I would be loaded ) - I received my first ever phone bill from docomo (If all those zeros had a dollar sign in front of them, I would be bankrupt) - My first definate case of frottage on a crowded tokyo train (You can't always be sure, as the trains are so crowded, but unless someone was holding their umbrella incredibly awkwardly it was a definate case of unmutual sexual gratification, or as I prefer to call it "intimate-public peversion") Note: I was the object of love, NOT the giver of love - I saw Gaijin Nemisis ... read more

Sanae and I like having our Friday Nights together - we get wasted locally and run around our apartment or the outside world of Saitama in outfits made up of pyjamas, tracksuits and thongs (or flip flops for those of you who will giggle at the use of the word Thong) giggling and dancing loudly. Anyway, we've decided to spice it up by getting drunk to a theme, so in the interests of sticking to the theme: Bienvenido a la Noche espaƱola or as they say in English: Welcome to Spanish Night The first step of Spanish Night is the guests. We're tired of our Australian and Japanese selves so we have re-invented ourselves for the evening. For Sanae I chose the name Dolce which means sweet, which is Sanae all over. For me Sanae chose ... read more
