We got to Osaka on the afternoon of the ninth after a long bus and trian journey! We decided to go to the umeda sky building to get a view of the city. It was really cool because we stayed up there all afternoon so we saw Osaka by day and night! There is a glass enclosed escalator on the way up which is supposed to be terrifying but really wasn't! Ideally we wanted to watch the sun set over Osaka bay with a cold beer but it was too cloudy :( The terrace was outside though which is why we look so wind swept! The views were terrific though as you'll see...... read more

Okay, Okay I know it seemed like I didn’t really like this place from my first blog and truth be told I didn’t. However, every time I visit the city it grows on me a little more. It is kind of like that misfit abstract painting in your friend’s apartment that you slowly become found of. Anyway, back at Osaka Castle and there is another protest next to it! This time it is some sort of labor union protest. All I could gather from it before wandering off was someone bellowing on a loud speaker about how national health care should be expanded to include more. At least this protest wasn’t hostile towards me. This castle visit was a quick one. We didn’t go inside, just chilled on the grounds enjoying takoyaki and the scenery. After ... read more

Hey friends and family! Although Locky told me I should set up a blog before I left, its taken me until now to realise how much easier than writing emails it is, and to finally get started on one. As you can tell, I've been fairly slack in the email department so far (unless you've written to me, then I've tried to write back), so the idea with the blog is mostly to put up pictures a bit more regularly that you can all see and thus see what I'm up to... In a nutshell, everything is going brilliantly (touch wood), better than I could have planned or even imagined... I've made a few different groups of Japanese friends, with whom I'm going out regularly: this week was a Acapella concert in Umeda Monday night, Dinner ... read more

Viimeiseksi yoksi olin varannut ja maksanut hotellin Osakan lentokentan lahelta, jotta siirtyminen lentokentalle kavisi sitten helposti. No siirtyminen hotelliin oli oma lukunsa. No sitten hotellista vastattiin etta englantia ei osata. Pyysin hostellin pitajaa soittamaan sinne. Selvisi milta asemalta minut haettaisiin (Rinku town) ja etta tanaan ei paikalla olisi englantia osaavaa henkiloa. Lipun osto Kiotossa kavi helposti (1770 jenia). Minun piti vaihtaa Osakassa junaa. Jalkimmaisessa junassa vastapainen kaveri alkoi... read more

Up bright and early (hey, it feels like early afternoon US time at 5:00 a.m. in Japan), we had the hotel's complimentary breakfast: tea, coffee and pastries. We began walking around the electronics district, but quickly figured out that we were facing the same problem: not much open at 8:30 or 9:00 a.m. A huge store said it would be open at 10:00 a.m. In fact, the only people awake seemed to be the business men and women on their way to work. And sumo wrestlers! That's right, we went past a gymnasium that seemed to be some sort of arena for a sumo tournament. There were drums being played and wrestlers converging on the place wearing kimonos and sandles. We decided to get on the subway and head for the civil rights museum we had ... read more

When we arrived in Osaka it was already dark and the city was bustling. We had a few moments of confusion: Which metro? Which way to the hotel? We were exhausted by the time we got to our hotel, a business hotel near the electronics district. Although we never really exposed ourselves to the nightlife or busiest parts of Tokyo, so our comparison may be unfair, but we found Osaka far more crazy than Tokyo -- a lot of neon, and fast moving people, bicycles and cars. The bicycles are just about as dangerous as the cars, as they ride on the sidewalks at about 20 miles per hour and you are the one expected to get out of the way. Our hotel room in Osaka was more "Western Style", but very tiny. It was more ... read more

Our accommodation location in Osaka seemed a bit seedy at first from the direction we approached.... a bit 'reddish' you might say. However a block away was a well known restaurant and shopping strip. There was no shortage of restaurants to choose from, and it had a carnival type atmosphere at night. Our room at the ryokan was quite large, and was the first time that the futons were rolled up during the daytime and laid out for us in the evening . Osaka is known as the 'friendly city', and they even did our washing for free. We visited the Osaka Aquarium on a very rainy day, it has the largest aquarium tank in the world. We may not have seen a whale shark in Exmouth (Western Australia), but we did see one in ... read more

Hi guys, Well, in Kyoto, we saw a temple called Hi-an Temple. It had heaps of gold statues. It was awesome! After that, we went to a market. Jack and Albert bought a minature sword on a key-chain. I got a book called Charlottes Web. ( In English thankfully! ) We had dinner and went back to the ryokan. The next day we went to see a golden temple. It was made out of gold-leaf. It was beautiful! We also saw heaps of gardens. They were lovely. We also went to a castle called Nijo-jo Castle. It was really cool because it had squeaky floorboards, so if it got attacked, they would know when people entered the castle. After that, we than went back to our ryokan. Our ryokan has only 6 rooms. It is a ... read more

March 21-25 We are having a day at sea and what a day it is. Since last night we have been tossing and turning in high seas and gale force winds. The barf bags are out, the women are in flats and we hang onto the rails whenever we are moving about. The stabilizers are out. The sea is rough with 7-12’ swells though the wind is 22 knots. I am on the lowest passenger deck. The crew quarters are one deck down. I am certain that the waves are crashing on the crew portholes as the foam is drenching my window two stores above sea level. I love it. I am forward and the bow rises and falls with the swells. It hits the water hard and the ship trembles. My stomach feels like I’m ... read more
