Tuli siinä katellessa hirvee nälkä joten lähdin metsästämään ruokakauppaa, S-markettia ei löytynyt :D mut semmonen marketti jossa olin käynyt kaksi vuotta sitten, kauheesti kaikkee...Mul ei ihan noi merkit oo viel hakusessa joten en ihan mitä tahansa us... read more

A.K.A Capsule Hotel Osaka! Ok, so it's not much like a microwave then, save for the fact that the walls are white and metal, and it's a rectangular shape. I had to make an early trip to the airport, so I decided to overnight in osaka. Rather than sleep on a park bench (which i'm told a lot of students do for lack of funds), I booked a room...ahem....capsule for one night. The earliest train from my place (5.55am) would have resulted in my being at least an hour late to meet Danilo at Kansai airport, so this was the better option. It served 2 purposes. One, to be there at the arrivals gate on time, and 2, to fulfil a long time dream of mine, which was, yes, to sleep in a long white ... read more

Here I am, about to blog about Europe, while I'm already in Japan. How many times has this happened on this trip? Too many to count. Before I begin, let me just brag that by the time I get back to Canada I'll have been around the world two whole times in the last two years - once clockwise and once counter-clockwise. Though by the time we get to October I may well have been around it two and a half times as I've been offered a job as an au paire (nanny) for a beautiful family (with a beautiful house) in France, and I think I'm going to take it. Needless to say, I liked Europe enough to consider moving there. In fact, I LOVED Europe (even Greece!) with its inherent diversity, old world charm ... read more

Birthday celebrations in Osaka! I felt that an Osaka Birthday for my 24th sounded kind of special. Off I went on a Saturday afternoon, with no clear plan in mind, and only knowing that a friend from Kyoto was going to meet up with me somewhere, at some time, and his friend was coming too. I wasn't dressed in my finest, but I wasn't too shabby, dressed in humble jeans, black top and a headscarf. This would not have made me feel out of place in Kyoto, but hanging around Umeda station in Osaka, or walking to the HEP building (not a hepatitis building but an Entertainment Plaza, I believe) , everywhere I looked there were glamorous people. Men women, you name it, ALL FASHIONABLE. Japanese people are so COOL, they need a new word for ... read more

Leaving Tokyo, the next stop was Osaka. Kelvin and I stayed in the cutest hostel. It was pretty much like a house, with one open plan room upstairs which had just 6 bunk beds. Downstairs was the shower room and a little living room with a dining table, books, tv, computer, maps, comics... Straight away we met my friend Namiko (Namiko and I last year - AND ). Had some childlike fun on a big ferris wheel...ate at an Izakaya (of course) and had a good old catch up. Our first full day we decided to go to this huge electronics department store, just to see how advanced Japan is (and how crazy!). There was one section where you could try all these fitness machines. Some you had to stand on and the machine wiggled, maybe ... read more

Osaka is the 2nd largest city in Japan after Toyko. We arrived in Osaka you guessed it by "bullet train". Those trains are supper, our Japan rail pass paided for it's self before we even left Toyko. We arrived on the 17th May. Yet again we were near to all the sites and the subway station was located under our hotel. The only complaint I have about where we stayed was that there was no free internet, as the hotel was a business hotel. We went to Osaka Castle and to Universal Studios. A bit of traditonal culture and Janapnese-American culture, well if you could call it that. We visited Osaka castle on the Sunday. It was a very popular destination but alot of the information was lost on us in the museum as it was ... read more

Japanese Vocabulary: yokozuna: the highest rank a sumo can achieve fundoshi: sumo thong thing yowai: weak higashi: east nishi: west chanko nabe: a type of nabe dish (hotpot dish) that is specific to sumos...it, along with rice and beer, seems to be the staple dish of their diet. Like all nabe, it consists of a broth in which items are simmered, but I think chanko nabe is particularly high in protein. izakaya: japanese bar/eatery that serves a wide variety of drink as well as Japanese small plate bar food...like a Japanese tapas bar On Christine's birthday, we went to the second to last day of a big sumo tournament in Osaka a couple of months ago! Watching sumo is crazy…people drink beer and get noisy and when one of the yokozuna (highest ranking sumo) is defeated ... read more

We arrived by train from Kyoto and had a real struggle to find our hotel despite the assistance of one kind local. We were staying in Dotombori, not far from the subway, but our poor reading of Japanese maps and some very scant instructions from the Internet led us a little astray before we found our last Ryokan. Our rooms were large, with 12 tatami each and our first private bathroom in Japan (not much of a luxury as it turned out and we never got used to Japanese wc's with all their gadgets). Internet access was by means of one shard laptop for all guests, so a touch difficult. Dotombori is the hot-spot of Osaka where everyone goes to party and it is a massive neon-fest, swarming with businessmen out for the night at the ... read more

We spent today at universal studios..well there are only so many temples you can take! It was a bit out of the budget but loads of fun messing around on roller coasters (steve did perforate one ladies ear drum with his screams!). Saw Jaws, Back to the Future, Spiderman etc and generally had a great day, pictures really speak for themselves... We are now back at the hostel as we are knackered!! Tomorrow we are visiting Osaka aquarium and then we travel to Hiroshima for some more culture!!... read more
