I would like to back to the old rehab center. but this is the sistem in Japan. そ... read more

Mum and Dad have been friends with Paolo and Mariko since before I was born, from when they lived in Montreal. Mariko is Japanese so they spend some of the year in Japan. I can't remember the last time I've seen them, probably at least 15 years ago or so, but dad emailed them to see if they would be in Japan at the same time as I was, and it turned out that they would be and were kind enough to let me stay with them for 2 nights at their home in Okayama. It wasn't far from Hiroshima to Okayama - about 2 and a half hours. Mariko met me at the bus station but we nearly missed each other because I didn't recognize her and she wasn't sure if she recognized me (but ... read more

Every year on the 3rd Saturday in February, one of the coldest night of the year, a crowd of 100s gathers around Saidaiji Temple in Okayama city at midnight. Pushing, crushing each other they vie for space and wait for the chance to receive a blessing, good luck for a year. When the stroke of midnight finally occurs the lights are shut off and the head priest throws three shingi (sacred sticks) into the masses for the participants to grapple for. Of course what I’m leaving out here is that the crowd is entirely composed of nearly naked men clad only in fundoshi (a Japanese style loincloth) and who are completely juiced on sake. Hadaka Matsuri literally means naked festival. There are several in Japan every winter, but the largest and most notorious is held in ... read more

I will always look back at this day and think swelteringly hot. August in Japan is not a good time to do site seeing. The best thing to do during the hot muggy days of summer is to stay inside and worship the air conditioning. Despite the heat I wanted to go across the Inland Sea to Honshu and explore. Okayama is the first major city across the Seto Ohashi Bridge on Honshu. Every time I’ve gone to the main island I switched trains at Okayama Station, but I never went into the city before today. Okayama is home to Korakuen one of the three most scenic gardens in Japan. Even though it was really nice, I feel like it paled in both size and grandeur to Ritsurin. (I may be biased since I am a ... read more

Ohayoo Gozaimasu, as I lay out my futon this evening, the sun is just breaking over the skyline and Chicago is hoping for another day closer to spring. Just 1 month is left before school semester ends, and then the children will have two weeks off to enjoy the coming cherry blossoms, play with friends, and prepare to enter into their new grade. In just three years, these students go through remarkable changes, the 7th graders who are fresh out of primary school and full of childish tendancies. The 8th graders who are suddenly aware of their awkwardness and their place amongst their peers. And the 9th graders who are suddenly given responsibilities and entrance exams which will begin to lock in their future. I will use my two weeks to bask in the glow of ... read more

Yes, every single week there is at least one festival happening somewhere in Japan! This weekend it was off to Okayama on the shinkansen (bullet train) to watch the Hadaka Matsuri (English translation: NAKED FESTIVAL!) I was keen to get there early on Saturday to get my sightseeing fill. Laura “I don’t do mornings!” Lewis decided to join me later on so I arrived in Okayama around lunchtime and after a drink and sandwich set off for Okayama castle and the famous Korakuen Garden (translated: Garden of Pleasure After) and is listed as one of the top 3 gardens in the whole of Japan. As the sun was shining, I visited the garden first and had a fabulous time trying out all the settings on my camera to capture the beautiful flowers which had started to ... read more

First of all, congratulations to Amit for having bathed with Japanese Yakuza and telling them that their tattoo is "delicious." I feel like I've missed out on an authentic japanese experience. Ok, so the town of Kurashiki is known for a beautiful stretch of canal, lined with warehouses that eventually turned into museums. Of course, by the time we got to the city, all the museums were closed. The total length of the canal of interest was maybe 200 meters. And in fact, the entire city could be traversed in a matter of 30 minutes. Given that, it was actually a really good night. The canal was infact very picturesque, and in our search for a restaurant (the entire city pretty much shut down after 7PM), we were able to find an authentic soba restaurant bwhere ... read more

Kōrakuen translates as 'the garden for taking pleasure later'. Apparently it is named after a Chinese proverb which says the emperor should suffer sorrow before his people, and pleasure after them'. Kōrakuen is rated as one of the top three parks in Japan. I personally disagree with rating everything, I prefer my own opinion to the official version ;-). That said, it's a nice place and even with the thankfully not too big a crowd (comes with being in the top three I guess) there's spaces to sit and soak it in. It was a beautiful day, but at that time of year you have to go without the cherry trees in bloom, the leaves turning red and the snow scenes. "You've got to check out Kurashiki" I'd been told. 'Hmm, yeah, I spose I have ... read more

"Yeah, sure, that sounds like a good weekend away" I thought when the invite email came around. A weekend with friends (some I hadn't yet met in person, but knew they'd be good company) somewhere I hadn't been before - I'm always up for that. I checked out the place online, the Hattoji International Villa, 20 km from a middle of nowhere train staion. Yep, that's what you call getting away for a quiet weekend. Hang on...... that's the weekend of the taiko (Japanese drums) festival. B****r, I was going to go to that. Can't be helped, already have my name down for the Okayama trip. (I had recently started going to the group's practises, but was very much still in the beginner department :-) A month or so later when the taiko practises picked up ... read more
