Last night when sussing how to get to our next stop, I did wonder why on earth were we going to this place Hakone? It is the longest journey that we are doing in one day this holiday and ends with a local line trip to what seems to be nowhere. But checking on my guidebook it does look awesome - hot springs, boiling walks through sulphur jets and hopefully views of Mount Fuji. Checking on Google Maps, there was a train leaving at 7am and so we got up at 5.30am to find out at the station that the train left at 8.06am. Oh. After a a few hours and on the second train, I spotted a mountain rather larger than the rest - was it Mount Fuji? I guess it was, it had to ... read more

Hello again So my stay in Hakone was very nice. It is the best hostel I have stayed in so far and the people are very friendly. I have met quite a few people and made new friends with them. I went to kamakura from here and hiked the most difficult hiking path in Japan which used to be one of the main highways for trade. It was an amazing experience because there were no people on the path and it was very misty. This gave the surrounding forest a very unique atmosphere as you can imagine. I have seen mount fuji from the lake today and that was breathtaking. I will leave for Takayama tomorrow which is situated in the Japanese alps. So far the mountains of Japan are amazing and I have been told ... read more

Bez jaj.

Mam nadzieję, że niestrawność nie skróci go ... read more

We had a great weekend away, staying in the Hakone-Yumoto Hotel which is a Ryokan - a Japanese style hotel where you sleep on a mattress on a tatami mat - in the town of Hakone-Yumoto which is in the southwestern part of Kanagawa, part of Fuji Hakone Izu National Park and renowned for the many hot springs In the area. Surrounded by trees perched precariously on the remnants of ancient volcanoes the hotel had much to offer; delicious Japanese food and the chance to enjoy their own hot springs. Knowing that we were going somewhere where there were hot springs we'd taken our cosies. We soon discovered that that was a silly move as you're only allowed in the hot springs in the all-together with separate bathing areas for male and female. It was all ... read more

We arrived at Tokyo Narita at 6am and met Brenton and Anne at Tokyo Central station. We travelled to Hakone by train and apparently did a travel loop that may have included seeing Mt Fuji. I don't remember it and Brenton says I was asleep most of the day.... read more

Destination: Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture (Distance from Tokyo: 96km, approximately 60 miles) Map → http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/location/regional/kanagawa/hakone.html Date: November, 2007 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Have you waken up early in the morning and injected a lot of fresh clean air of highland into your body? If so, you might know how it feels. It’s so nice huh? (unless you have a hangover). On the second day of our stay in Hakone, we got up around 6:00am and started the day with taking a walk in the hotel’s neighborhood to get that feeling. The whole Hakone area actually consists of several onsen towns from the foot of its mountains near Hakone Yumoto station. And the town we stayed is, called Sengokuhara (http://www.sengokuhara.info) the highest and deepest onsen spot in the area. The higher the better... read more

This post documents our two-day side trip during our week long trip to Tokyo in the summer of 2010. Part 1 of this series describes the highlights of our sojourn in Tokyo while Part 2 describes our climb of Mt Fuji. Prior to our arrival in Japan, I had booked a room at the excellent Moto-Hakone Guest House, and I also bought the Hakone Free Pass for JPY5500 on arrival at Narita. Both turned out to the excellent purchases; the guest house was friendly, homely and great value for money, and the Pass allowed unlimited rides within the Hakone area plus one return trip between Shinjuku and the Hakone area. Leaving Shinjuku around noon on Thursday, we took the local train to the town of Odawara. From there, we took a ... read more

Every October 24, on top of Mt Komagatake in Hakone, the Goshinkasai Motomiya Reisai festival takes place. It is an important festival for the Hakone shrine and it consists of lighting a fire of which burning coals will be distributed to all related shrines in the area. This year, the top of Mt Komagatake was covered in clouds which gave a special feel to this matsuri. In the photo to the right, two Shinto priests are using a bow drill to light a fire while two others are trying to keep them out of the strong winds. Once the torch was lit, the Guuji (head priest) of the shrine brought it to the pyre and light it. The ceremony continued with a miko dance and offerings of sasaki branches and prayers. By this time the pyre ... read more
