Background: In 1603, a Tokugawa shogunate (military dictatorship) ushered in a long period of isolation from foreign influence in order to secure its power. For 250 years this policy enabled Japan to enjoy stability and a flowering of its indigenous culture. Following the Treaty of Kanagawa with the United States in 1854, Japan opened its ports and began to intensively modernize and industrialize. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Japan became a regional power that was able to defeat the forces of both China and Russia. It occupied Korea, Formosa (Taiwan), and southern Sakhalin Island. In 1933 Japan occupied Manchuria and in 1937 it launched a full-scale invasion of China. Japan attacked US forces in 1941 - triggering America's entry into World War II - and soon occupied much of East and Southeast Asia. After its defeat in World War II, Japan recovered to become an economic power and a staunch ally of the US. While the emperor retains his throne as a symbol of national unity, actual power rests in networks of powerful politicians, bureaucrats, and business executives. The economy experienced a major slowdown starting in the 1990s following three decades of unprecedented growth, but Japan still remains a major economic power, both in Asia and globally. In 2005, Japan began a two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

Golf and spa Asia » Japan » Chiba » Ichikawa
There is a group of "golfers" at Invesco. I wouldn't so much call them golfers as golf enthusiasts. They absolutely love the game, and hosted one of their two annual outings a couple of weeks ago in Chiba. Chiba is about a 2 hour drive outside of Tokyo. You have to drive under Tokyo Bay to get to it. Back in the bubble days here, the government built one of the most expensive tunnels ever running underneath Tokyo Bay. Otherwise, you would have to drive the coast of the Bay which would take an extra hour. They've since paid for the [View Full Entry]

At The Turn

I had such a romantic day today. It's a little bit of a shame that my romantic day was shared with a various collection of women and not with the a gorgeous, tall, muscley japanese dancing teacher, but that's the way these things work sometimes. I guess. If they have to. I don't see why they do though. Anyway, my date day started off with Sanae. We had set today aside to go exploring the prefecture of Chiba, famous for all the disney resorts and for the picturesque beauty of the seaside. Leaving disney aside we decided to check out the [View Full Entry]

Recovering Asia » Japan » Chiba » Ichikawa
Today, finally, I almost feel healthy again. Certainly well enough to resume class on Monday. I've felt very confined here, ill and unable to go anywhere or do all that much, and I really look forward to being able to get out to school. My host mom must have sensed my restlessness building up the last couple of days, and she has been phenomenal in keeping me company and helping me to recover. Thursday morning, I had my follow up from Wednesday's doctor's appointment. In the afternoon, we all, except for Otoosan, went to see Shrek 3, which was a really [View Full Entry]

Almost Done Asia » Japan » Chiba » Ichikawa
I know that this experience here in Japan is a once in a lifetime chance, but I can't help but look forward to when I can go home, exactly a week from now. I've loved being here with my host family, learning from them, traveling with them, and sharing our cultures with one another has been the best part of the entire experience here in Japan. Yet there are some things I'm starting to miss about home, things that I've taken for granted as normal. Like a bed. I've been sleeping on a futon here, and every day I feel older [View Full Entry]

Assimilation  Asia » Japan » Chiba » Ichikawa
Surprisingly, I think I'm starting to really assimilate. And not just because of the fact that I sit on my heels on the floor and use chopsticks at every meal, but the small things that I've started doing without even noticing. Today I started looking inward and wondering how I've changed, and I've seen a lot of things that have changed in the short time I've been here. The first thing that I really noticed was my umbrella usage has blended with the Japanese way. Not only is it an umbrella, but its also a parasol at the same time. And [View Full Entry]

Karaoke Asia » Japan » Chiba » Ichikawa
And life is good again. A few hours ago, I went for some karaoke with my host mom and sisters. You can't imagine how wonderful it is to go shake off some stress in high Japanese style. This time, we spent two hours in karaoke, and before that, my host mom showed me a local closing sale, where I managed to buy some more souvenirs for family at home, and an omiyage for my host father, a cute yellow necktie with chickens and eggs printed on it. I doubt he'll ever wear it, but I want to show that I'm trying [View Full Entry]

Elementary School Visit Asia » Japan » Chiba » Ichikawa
Many things have happened since the last time I updated in this journal, yet while it feels like I was just here updating yesterday, a whole week has already passed. Japanese class is basically the same as ever, frustrating, long, and boring, but its the life outside the classroom which makes up for it. On Tuesday, the UNC group went together to a nearby elementary school, broke off and went to visit with separate classrooms for the remainder of the school day. I was assigned to a first grade classroom, and the children, of which there were about 30, were incredibly [View Full Entry]

Saturday with the family Asia » Japan » Chiba » Ichikawa
Today was one of the most culturally immersed days I have experienced thus far in Japan. Because my host dad came home from Korea a few days ago, we have a lot more freedom about moving about and going places, and we all took full advantage of it. For starters, in the morning, we all went as a family to Yuzu's kindergarten (called youchien here) because today they were hosting a bazaar, an event where all the students and teacher come together to create a fun family social event with games, food, prizes, and a mini kiosk full of random things, [View Full Entry]

An Exhausting Week Asia » Japan » Chiba » Ichikawa
I think that my euphoria over arriving in Japan finally wore out sometime near the beginning of this week. I haven't quite hit that "depression period" that I'm told I will experience while abroad, and I hope I never get there, but this week really has tried my patience. There were problems with communication between the teachers, students, and director of the program, and the third year class was not being handled very well for the last several days. Several of the students (including me) wrote to notify the director, and hopefully things will be settled by the beginning of next [View Full Entry]
