Ready to jump right into life under the sea, I wriggled and squirmed my way through 2 hours of very boring (though mandatory) PADI videos and actually had to study a few chapters in the manual. I felt a bit like a 12 year old student suffering through science all over again. Yes, yes, I know fish have gills. Yes, I know I need air underwater too. No, I don't care what that type of valve is called. Aaaaand so on. But the very next morning, bright and early, my lovely (and very patient) instructor Remy suited me up, tank and all, and in the water we went! What an incredible feeling, to breathe like normal 10 metres below the surface. Underwater, I was all over the place, floating around like a puffer fish as Remy ... read more

Finally here Hi. It has taken a bit longer to find time to post than I had thought. The life of a student diver is actually quite busy. A couple of dives a day and then study, study, study the rest of the time. But I'm not complaining as you will see. Getting here The trip down here was uneventful apart from massive delays on the flights. In Amsterdam they found a problem in one of the engines and we sat in the plane and waited for more than four hours. All in all I sat in that bloody seat for more than almost 18 hours. New record. I had a full day in Kuala Lumpur and tried to get a visa, but Indonesian bureaucracy is annoyingly inconsistent and everything I had read beforehand proved not ... read more

I'm starting to learn that bus terminals in Medan are not actual terminals, but rather one man standing on the side of the road with a book of tickets. The minibus dropped me off here, in front of this man who didn't speak a lick of English. I managed to make myself understood, at least in terms of my need for an overnight bus to Banda Aceh. Though he took this to mean that I was somehow able to understand Bahasa Indonesia because he continued to ramble on leaving me no choice but to smile and nod politely, and hope he wasn't putting some kind of evil hex on me, or asking something equally unpleasant like if I'd had any diarrhea yet. The Indonesians here are full of questions and nothing is too personal for them ... read more

Wij zitten in Iboih een klein plaatsje en moesten een heel stuk lopen naar Yuliah's place. maar dat was het waard! We zaten de eerste nacht in ... read more

Hi! We're still on Pulau Weh. We have been having trouble getting off the island due to the ferry being cancelled the last few days due to bad weather. Hurricane Lawrence has been close (not sure how close) and as a result the island has effectively been sealed off. Maybe tomorrow! Still, there are worse places to be stuck, we had another dive today! We are hoping to get on the ferry tomorrow (and for it to leave) and then maybe we'll get to Bukit Luang for Crimbo day. Merry Christmas to you all! Tim... read more

Hi! Well, we've finally got something to report! After a week of almost complete inactivity in KL we hit the road dramatically a few days ago, heading to Penang, just off the west coast north f KL. I say just because the ferry took 10 mins and cost approximately 24p! There's a bridge across as well, that's actually the longer distance! That was after the 8ish hour overnight train ride though, but 3rd class in Malaysia compares quite favorably with some British Rail trains I've been on in recent years. We stayed in Georgetown for a couple of days, taking in some of the Penang National Park (we trekked to Monkey Beach - sadly it was too late in the day for the monkeys who'd already eaten their fill of tourists.) Then we headed here, leaving ... read more

A nightmare with real pains woke me up in the morning. I have to take some pics of this place, I thought. Cleaned up the wounds and took some painkillers, still walking like a zombie I went downstairs took a book I been reading with me. Freddie and his crews said hi and asked how am I doing. I continued my walk down to the sun chairs on the terrace. That was the longest walk I had from staying 3 days in there. Sunbathing was punishing me but I felt good after. Checked out from the rooms but hang around at the restaurant for hours, I ordered beer because it was a hot day, my face swollen and it’d be nice to have sips of beer. “You ordered beer.” “Yes.” “You’re a local.” “Yes.” “Muslim?” “Why?” ... read more

Well i love Sumatra. I arrived in Medan, the gateway to sumatra about 2 weeks ago and quite liked it form the off. There were not loads of scam artists and rip off merchants, i think as tourism has dwindled here so have the numbers of mosquito men that follow them around. Any scamming attempts were pretty lame and offered some free amusement. I was there for a minute outside the terminal before one old gut followed me and sat down next to me in the cafe that i went in to escape. He pointed to the tourist office and said it was his office, then handed me his card, which was a bit of notepaper with his scrawled contact details on, with ' Tourist ofise' written above it. He can get me to my hotel ... read more

We were dropped in Banda Aceh at a really dingy hotel. And for people who are used to paying $5-10 a night for a room, we don't have high expectations. We decided to rather look around for something else, but after 2 hours of walking, we were stuck with the one miserable option. It turns out that since Banda Aceh was one of the city most devastated by the Tsunami (you can see a passenger ship lying beached about 3km inland!) there has been a flood of NGOs to the town, and the prices of rooms and beer have gone through the roof. Our new low in accomodation not only lacked windows or any form of ventilation, but when I asked where the light switch was, the manager showed me how to drag a rickety table ... read more

Hi all! A bit behind with the travel blogs, as you can see from the date that this was published we are doing a bunch all in Singaopore. But from Indonesia here we go.......................... Indonesia was brilliant! The journey was eventful to say the least, ferry crossing from Melaka in Malaysia was fine until we got off........where Meme got her bag searched for smuggling tampons! They didn't care about all the unlabelled vitamins and assortment of antibiotics and not forgetting those clean syringes-oh no just the tampons. Do you know how hard it is to tell 2 men that don't speak english what a tampon is (apperntly they don't have them in Indo!)...I tell you what bloody difficult, they just kept feeling them, they even smelt them! First stop was Bukkittinggi, which was a bit random ... read more
