Contrary to what I assumed that Parasailing is another adrenaline-rushing activity, it is not. Rather, it is a very relaxing feat. I just had my first pay for my first job here in SG. So I want to treat myself and the person who made everything possible - my brother. I wanted to go wakeboarding. There is a cable wake park here in Singapore, but it seems they cater to the more advanced riders, or for my case, better swimmers. I just chanced upon this site cable-ski in Batam. It's just an hour away by boat and they are beginner-friendly. I tried to book us a package but they're full. Instead, we just went there with no plans. I just wanna check out the place if it's okay so I can book earlier next time or ... read more

Yes, everything is cheap in Batam compared to other cities in Indonesia. A quick comparison, you pay IDR 5000 in Medan for parking in a shopping mall, but in Batam you only spend IDR 1000 for parking in a major shopping mall. That's 5 times cheaper. This was not the first time I went Batam, but there are so much places to visit and so many cheap things that I would love to come back anytime soon. This is a 2-day 1-night trip. We booked the hotel online coz it's cheaper to do so rather than booking on the spot. We also rented a car for 1day and booked our ferry ticket a few days before departure. Saturday morning, our group of 5 people gathered and had breakfast at Food Republic, Vivocity. The ferry we took ... read more

A Typical Day Part of my job involved travelling to & fro from Batam and exchange the latest news with our counterparts. Departing on the earliest 7.55am ferry from Harbourfront Terminal, it normally took an hour or so to reach the Batu Ampar Ferry Terminal where our office was located. After clearing the customs' formalities and paying the USD25 working visa (that's daylight robbery!), our company representative would be waiting for us at the arrivals to drive us to the office. Visitors on vacation would never arrive at the Batu Ampar Ferry Terminal (aka HarbourBay) even though this is slowly changing. The ferry terminal have been upgraded and the nearby Harbour Bay Mall with anchor players like Carrefour is already opened for business. Instead, they would normally be shipped to the Waterfront City (Holiday Inn / ... read more

Hey everybody! Thanks for all who read my blog! I hope it wasn't too long. I was having some trouble last week adjusting to the island and I went through pretty serious culture shock. But who can blame me!? A naive young american flies all the way across the world and plants herself in the most unique culture where nothing is the same and everything is like one big giant puzzle I can't crack. With that week behind me I am happy to say that things are going a lot smoother and I am finding myself really happy to be here once I got used to everything. I had a really good weekend and have a whole different outlook on the island now. This weekend our boss took us out for lunch on Saturday because we ... read more

After sitting in one position for 17 hours on the airplane I arrived in Singapore. I dont know if I have ever sat for that long of a time in one position haha but I did get some good meals in the air as well as watched about 5 free movies which was a nice way to pass the time but I literally did not think the flight would ever land. I arrived in Singapore, one of the cleanest places I have ever been to in my life. I didnt get a chance to walk around the city but the airport was sparkling clean, and someone goes in and cleans the bathroom after EVERY person. I also learned that you can receive some hefty fines for chewing gum, jay walking, spitting and not flushing the toilet! ... read more

Saturday, 13th March 2010 A quiet 2 Day 1 Night weekend breakaway on the eastern shore of Batam Island, the url=http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g297717-d447157-r58529912-Batam_View_Beach_Resort-Batam_Riau.htmlBatam View Resort may be aging gracefully. But it provided an ideal avenue to spend quality time with friends and getaway from the city life. About 35 minutes from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal, we arrived at the resort sometime after 11am on Saturday. Our superior room was a mixed bag. While it was facing the carpark directly, the corner of the balcony offered breath taking view of the Batam Straits =) Throughout our stay, we took all our meals at the resort restaurant (that's 2 lunches, 1 complimentary breakfast and 1 dinner) as we were too lazy to join in the local shopping spree. Instead, we spent 3 hours whiling our time going through ... read more

According to the official Indonesian ferry service website (PELNI.co.id) there was a ferry leaving from Batam Island, near to Singapore, for Jakarta this afternoon. The ferry went about every four days, so getting the day right was important. And catching a ferry rather than the easier option of flying was important to me too. Ben and I left Little India at 7am and caught the clean and efficient MRT train to the Singapore ferry port, in order to catch a ferry to Batam in time for the 1pm Indonesian ferry. If that is beginning to sound complicated, keep reading and pay attention. The Singapore leg of the morning’s journey was relatively straight forward, including going through customs and immigration - although Ben unexpectedly had to pay a charge for excess weight in his backpack: a little ... read more

Jakartasta tulimme Batamin saarelle 5 tuntia myöhässä olleella AirAsia-lennolla. ... read more

Great time too with Paula and Arthur such a lovely size, views and lots going on, its the start of the festival there soon & look to be some good stuff on, including Black Watch which we saw in Sydney and was fabulous. 18th Feb Just another day left then we will be flying home but what a finale, I am sat in our 'colonnial' villa in the Banjon Tree in Binton absolutely beautiful, wonderful attention to detail and service. Great beaches, pools and food overlooking the South China Sea and it is very hot but the breeze off the sea makes it feel comfortable. Have spent time in our Jacuzzi, swimming, a walk and a paddle on the beach , eating out looking over amazing coasts. This afternoon we went to the mangrove forest not ... read more

"Batam, is a very holey city", we were told on arrival into Indonesia with our good friend Tony. "Every road is covered in holes! hahaha" Tony exclaimed right afterwards. We took the ferry from Singapore straight to Batam spur of the moment for a weekend getaway. We wanted a taste of third world country before Thailand, and before we knew it, we were right in the middle of it. Once we exited the Batam Harbourfront, culture shock hit us with a strong force. We drove through the streets towards Batam Centre with Tony to translate for our taxi driver. As we gazed from inside our protected vessel we witnessed Indonesian life before our eyes. Roadside vendors infested the streets along with mopeds and dirt bikes. Families of 5 were packed onto tiny suzuki bikes while speeding ... read more
