Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

For my birthday weekend, we decided to take a trip to Kanyakumari and sneak a peek at Kerala. Kanyakumari is a little beach town at the Southern tip of India. It’s the place where 3 bodies of water meet: the Bay of Bengal from the East, the Indian Ocean from the South, and the Arabian Sea from the West. This little area is of great spiritual significance - there is a Hindu temple devoted to Goddess Devi, an island devoted to Vivekananda, a memorial to Gandhi (where some of his ashes are buried), and sacred waters for people to bathe in. Well, now we've got to Kanyakumari. Narn's got a few days off work now which is nice and well timed to have a look at this area. We're right at the southern tip of the country here, where the arabian, bengal and indian oceans/seas all meet. Its a nice town, and the people are very friendly. After getting off the train at Trivandrum, we were picked by a friend and we took a car down to here - its around 80km in total and took about 2 hours. It was a bit strange because you are driving through populated areas the [View Full Entry]

Kanyakumari is the southern tip of Tamil Nadu, very close to the Kerala border. It's most known as the spot where three seas meet: Arabic, Bengal and Indian. It's best to see it during sunset or sunrise. Unfortunately I missed both! I did a day trip to Kanyakumari taking the train early in the morning at 3am with a local girl I met while in Virdhunagar. We could only get unreserved tickets since we were purchasing the day of travel, which meant I was riding with the locals in overcrowded compartments hoping for a seat.... on the ground! It was actually [View Full Entry]

March 20th Around noon, we set out for the tip of India. The hotel graciously allowed us to leave the majority of our luggage free of charge, so we swept around at high speeds and generally revelled in the lightness on our shoulders. Oh, how many sweaters have I been hauling around all this time that I haven’t even looked at (2)!? From Trivandrum, we changed buses in Nagercoil and rode with the local pilgrims to Kanyakamuri, India’s point. It’s an important pilgrimage destination; we went to see the sun set and rise from the same vantage point, and to dip [View Full Entry]

Only a few hours after our arrival in Goa it became clear that I was going to have to modify my boorish behaviour. Travel in India toughens you up, and after several months of it the words "please" and "thank you" had disappeared from my vocabulary almost entirely and I thought nothing of shoving old ladies to the ground in order to secure a bus seat. But in Goa things are different. People queue in an orderly fashion, there are pedestrian pavements, observed traffic laws, and littering is a punishable offence rather than an encouraged civic duty. Goa remained a Portuguese [View Full Entry]

South Tamil Nadu's tourism industry is thriving and surprisingly it is not on the back of the Euro, the Pound, the Yen or any other foreign currency. I expect that once we step foot over the border from Tamil Nadu into Kerala that things might just be a little different but in this part of the world Indian holidaymakers seem to outnumber foreigners by over 1000 to 1. With not much more than an ambition to swim at the very tip of south India we headed off from Salem extremely happy that we made the effort to see the orphanage [View Full Entry]

I have arrived in Hyderabad and found a connection that is fast enough to upload some photos. If you look at www.flickr.com/photos/11000760@N05/ you will find some new sets. India South 2009 has them all, but India Wildlife is also interesting. I do hope you enjoy looking at these. In the meantime here are some words to amuse you... or bore you. Christian Fishermen and Express Trains. When I say we had arrived at the southernmost point of the Indian Subcontinent, I was being inaccurate by a kilometre. We had actually arrived at the southernmost railways station in India. When we [View Full Entry]

Kanyakumari is the “Land's End” of the Indian subcontinent and we were keen to dip our toes into where the Bay of Bengal meets the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. It also has great spiritual significance to Hindus and there were a good few Indian tourists there, many keen to practise their English with us. We went out to two rocks about 60m apart and 500m out to sea in a ferry. The ferry looked decent enough but a wee flicker of doubt crossed our minds when we saw the locals frantically grabbing the life jackets as they got aboard. [View Full Entry]

Well lots to update you all on as we have moved a longway since we last updated! So we will go through the basics bit by bit. We last updated in Mount Abu and from there we got a bus (6 hours) to Udaipur. We managed to book into a nice hotel which had a lovely roof top restaurant with views over the lake and surrounding area. Although lake picolo has suffered from the monsoons and is not as beautiful as im sure it once was its still a really nice setting. The surrounding area is our favorite so far, all [View Full Entry]

I now have officially been in the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean, and the Arabian Sea all in one wading session. On Sunday we visited the southern tip of India, Kanyakumari where we toured a palace and two island monuments. The ocean was breathtaking, as always, and the windy boat trips from monument to monument were just the boating fix I needed. On this trip we saw our first glimpse of mountains and my first Indian beach. We also saw some of our first public garbage cans which are oddly shaped like bunnies and penguins and it was our first [View Full Entry]
