March 31st 2012

We started on 31st March 2012 toward Kanyakumari from Bangalore at around 4 PM in the evening. It took around 1 hour to dodge the traffic and get out of the city. But we all were excited for this long trip. I forgot to tell you guys that the entire trip was a road trip so lots of driving involved :) (Best way to travel in India). Our first stop was near Krishnagiri On a Fuel station. We had our dinner in McDonald’s. Just make sure fill your self here because you wont get anything good after that. We stopped to refuel in couple of places. Complete road is a 4 Way higway NH7 so you can speed upto 120-160KMPH but be careful of coming wrong side traffic. We reached Kanyakumari before the sunrise, but got ... read more

Today marked two important symbolic events. One, we visited the Southernmost point in India, yey! Two, it was the halfway point for our trip, boo! (well it was yesterday in truth but that ruins the symbolism of today). I should also note that this will be published well after the day in question, so the date of publishing is not the same as the day referred to above. The Southern tip of India is a fairly unremarkable place, much like Lands End is a fairly unremarkable place, in fact I imagine many countries extremities despite being major tourist attractions are actually fairly unremarkable, if not just plain boring. The Southern tip does have a few things going for it however. Firstly it is the Southern tip of India which is in itself an achievement. Secondly being ... read more

I felt a sense of achievement arriving in Kanyakumari. It took some getting to and there were many times during my trip to there that I could have altered my path. But for some reason I had fixated myself on getting there, despite the 5 or so people I had met that had been there saying it wasn't worth it, or that it wasn't worth writing home about. Well for me, I am writing home about it as it was one of the highlights of my time in India. I was there for 2 days along with thousands of Indian pilgrims and tourists. It is a very spiritual place for Hindus and there are a lot of local legends and myths regarding the place. I went for a swim where the Indian Ocean, the Bay of ... read more

There are very few places on this beautiful earth where one can witness both the sunrise and the sunset over the horizon. One amongst them is Cape Comorin which is the tip of the Indian mainland. Cape Comorin which is better known as Kanyakumari is the place where the three humungous water bodies namely, Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal meet up. After travelling for about 2 hours from Thiruvananthapuram, we reached the tip of India. It is a crowded little place with shops and hawkers selling shells of various shapes and sands of different colours. A small boat ride from the mainland took us to the famous Vivekananda rock, where the great philosopher had meditated. There are a lot books about his teachings which can be purchased. Next to this stands the massive ... read more

What else you can expect being a roadie to have machine under your butt and your girl on your back. This was the dream and it came true on me on my first long ride on my bull, after marriage, so officially I will call it a HONEYMOON TRIP. Day 1: Once all three of us got geared-up with our spares, we headed on towards Mysore early in morning. It was a prefect time I guess, Diwali was about to come and people were planning to be mamma’s baby. This gave us opportunity to have roads just for us. Started from home around 4:30 AM with speedo saying 58865. I preferred to go to Mysore via NH 209 don’t know why. But I like that route much, its being longer though. Filled tank in Mysore and ... read more

January 12th 2008........5:10PM.......we were at one of the southernmost tips in India. I can call it the only southernmost tip of India.....but we must not forget our dear Andaman and Nicobar Islands!! Though we were tired with the day-long journey from the arabian sea cost of Kochi....watching all the fantastic beaches of Kollam, Varkala and heading towards Thiruvananthapuram.....the excellent sea breeze of Kanyakumari has got us rid of all the strain!! By the time we reached the place.....there was a lot of rush on roads. It looked like some quarell was going on in the first place......but by observing closely I understood how wrong I was!! The first thing which we get reminded when we think of Kanyakumari is the famous "Vivekananda Rock"......where Swami Vivekananda has meditated and undergone spiritual excellence. The best thing which I ... read more

Just a bit about this place. Lonely Planet is fairly scathing about Kanya (the reason for all the different spellings is (a) I can't always remember the correct one, and (b) neither can the Indians). They are wrong - it really is well worth a visit, and we are so glad we went. Our original choice after Madurai was Ramesvaran, a peninsula between India and Sri Lanka. We only changed our plans because we would have had to return to Madurai again, and spent more time there before we could get to our next stop. Madness, of course - this is India, after all! Our hotel was right next to the temple down by the beach. And at 4.30 every morning, they started blaring Hindu chants from a massive speaker system; enough to rattle the windows ... read more

The tip of India, that is, though in places India is just one big tip. We went to a travel agent in Madurai on Monday and asked about trains to Kanniyakumari, the Southernmost point of India. "Sorry, the train today is full" "But we want to go tomorrow" Trains only on a Monday". OK, what are the alternatives. "You can get a bus. It runs overnight, about 6 hours. 250 Rupees each" (Thats just over £3). "Where do we get the bus?" "It will pick you up from your hotel about 9:30 pm". So we booked for Tuesday night. Madurai was 'exciting', but if you told a Scot you were planning to go there, he would probably reply "Mad you are; aye". Tuesday night we checked out of TM Lodge, and sat waiting for the bus. ... read more

November 27th 2009

Thursday, Nov 26th - Kaniyakumari & Pondicherry Yesterday morning I finally left Varkala beach. It was definitely about time. The place is nice and chilled and stuff, but you sometimes just gotta move on, cause all the convenience can get suffocating. Don’t really know, if that sounds logical, but I think everyone who travels, knows exactly what I’m talking about. So yesterday morning I left to take a train to get all the way down south to Kaniyakumari, the southernmost point of India. On the first train I found out, why there are railings besides the doors: So you can hold on to them, when the train is jammed-packed not to fall off the train. Get kinda hard with a backpack on my back, but I survived :-) No, sounds more dramatic than it actually was. ... read more
