Return to India 7 (click on 'previous' below the panoramas for earlier blogs) 28th January 2018 Continuing the travels of two somewhat elderly brothers, David (of ‘the grey haired nomads’) and the younger, Mike, (aka, ‘keep smiling’). OK. Hands up. It's a year since my brother, Mike, and I, trod these glorious paths on yet another journey of discovery through India - and one or two of you might have noticed the story was unfinished. No excuses. Sometimes hobbies other than writing blogs get in the way. The following four: Return to India 7 - 10, will open the door to the final few days of our adventure. Come in out of the cold and I'll tell you all about it. Varanasi to Jaipur - Birds, Parties and Leopards The moon passed through earth's shadow as ... read more

Jaipur is named after its founder, Jai Singh II ( a warrior/scientist). It was Northern India's first planned city. The old city was painted pink (colour of hospitality) by Maharaja Ram Singh in 1876 to welcome the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII). Our tour today started with a trip or the magnificent Amber Fort which dominates the city. Residents of the old city are compelled by law to maintain the pink colour for all buildings. In Jaipur you see not only cows and dogs roaming the streets but also camels!!! The wall of the fort is 18 kms long. We took an elephant ride to the top accompanied by hawkers who follow you the whole way from the bottom to the top. There are many palaces within the fort with interiors of paintings and carvings. ... read more

Jaipur 5 (Elephants) Day 21. Thursday 21st December 2017 We had a late(ish) night due to planetarium so a late breakfast (8am). Shirl had arranged a visit to an elephant painting place who said they would send a taxi at 11am, which they did although it was just a single tuk-tuk, so we were cramped up. We were taken to Amber (again) and shown places we had already seen on our previous visit. We had to insist that we just wanted to see the elephants! A guy with a motorbike took both kids with him, leaving more room in the tuk-tuk for us adults. The kids loved it. At the elephant place was one elephant 18 years old, but another came soon afterwards. The kids got to feed them both with what looked like large corriander ... read more

Jaipur 3 (Pink City Day) Day 19. Tuesday 19th December 2017 So a quite early start. Mal pays her food & drink tab and I explain that I will pay her room. We all see her off with Manu in the big cab, hope it all goes well for her return, she did manage to get Atithi to print off her boarding passes for this internal flight and tomorrows international one. We all got a tuck-tuck to the Pink City and walked through numerous back-alleys, remeniscent of Varanasi. This was where the dalits (untouchables) live and they were quite surprised to see us mob amongst them, very friendly though. There were goats in coats and one goat wih enormous teats (possible mastitis?) They gave us directions and weeventually arrived at the City Palace (the nearby Jantar ... read more

I wake at 6am today so manage to make it to the yoga class which starts at 6.30am next to the swimming pool. As its so early I am the only person taking the class. It is different to the classes I am used to and the teacher comes over and pulls and pushes me further into the positions. She explains all the postures and what they are good for and ends the class with some chanting, very peaceful start to the morning. As I wander back to the room, I hear a man playing the flute under one of the pavilions and realise he is playing for the guests who are eating breakfast on the veranda. What a treat, the hotel really has pulled out all the stops to make the guests feel like royalty. ... read more

Our first morning in Jaipur and I don’t manage to wake up in time for the yoga at 6.30am, there’s a surprise. Today we are hiring a moped and with the help of google India we mange to find a man who will rent us a bike. The place is by the Ajameri gate at the entrance to the pink city and is very “local”. We soon realise after the transaction has been made that he is not really meant to be renting motorbikes to foreigners, he says ‘Please sir if you get stopped please tell them the bike belongs to a friend’. He gives Shenton two helmets and as one of them is only a half helmet that does not have a chin strap Shenton asks for a better quality one for me, his wife. ... read more

We arrive in Jaipur hoping that the hotel is good...called Shaphura House. Raj said good but not upper but not lowest so that confused us a bit. In fact a wonderful Heritage property and we have a lovely room. The common areas are just beautiful billiard room etc. Built in 1940s. We have lunch ..a Caesar Salad and an Apple & Asparagus...they were good but not quite right eg no asparagus...! Had a swim and then Raj picked us up at 4...I bought a tee shirt at a sports shop ( Puma dry. .) and we looked around local mall. Back to hotel at 6 GnT in room and went down for dinner at 730. Very happy with accommodation. 2/10...we had cancelled the tour of Fort and Palace of Winds. Instead Raj drove us through the ... read more

We drove past the impressive City Palace to the Window or Air Palace (Hawa Mahal) so named because it has many windows which are unglazed so that the air flows through. It is built in the shape of the crown of Krishna. The upper stories are just a facade but the royal women could watch street festivals from the lower stories. Our guide assured us that they led a very good life but I seriously doubt it compared to the life of modern women, but I did not think there was any point in arguing this. We then drove about 10 k to the Amer fort commonly known as the Amber Fort. It was really nice for us to see hills again after the flat country round Agra and Delhi. This is a huge complex situated on ... read more

Our second full day in India we traveled to Jaipur, in the state of Rajasthan. The drive was entertaining as the road passed through inhabited villages and interesting landscapes. Although I had experienced the bewildering sight of cows laying down anywhere and everywhere on the roads, this time we also saw camels, and even monkeys on the way. Again, I kept cringing watching those motorcycles carrying whole families, and none even wearing a helmet. I must say, though, that I failed to see any accidents on the road, in spite of the suicidal cows creating obstacle courses, or daredevil motorcyclists avoiding them. As we approached Jaipur, we passed a couple of hill forts that I would have loved to have been able to visit, as they looked amazing. We also passed the dazzling white sights of ... read more
