My place from the laneway
Lane way is a dirt road - and not busy at all - odd motorbike goes through - but mainly walking traffic and not much. Attached are some shots of my new 'flat' - a kind of bedsitter affair but quite roomy (for me anyway). AND.. for those thinking of coming to visit I am going to rig up a curtain divide and get a bed roll (for me) for such times - should work for the odd couple of nights - anything longer might not!
This place is actually physically attached to the building where the office I work from is - and upstairs is the home of the family of Sarita - the woman whose mother started this work (see next blog about the NGO itself).
I was not that enamoured at first with the prospect of a "room attached to the office" and was going to look at houses in the area. But having got here and offered the place until I did - I am now very happy to stay. First it's not like its part of the office - My entry is at the back lane and quite private and separate - one does not notice the physical wall attachment to the main building which is in the parallel main street.
So I get to walk to work
My courtyard
This is at the left side of the room (from the laneway but taken over a wall). It's private (the door at the end is to the main house but is not used) and is where I hang stuff out to dry. (OK - it's just around the corner - my entrance is in the back lane) which is very convenient - I get to duck home for lunch (and a nap if I like!).
The other thing is that on my first day I did get shown an alternative place that the NGO would rent for me (they are responsible under the partnership for providing my accommodation) - it was pretty disgusting and would have needed a lot of 'fixing' and equipping - with no guarantee that the landlord would follow through on things - plus it would have cost my NGO a packet vs this place which they own already (the rental market is very tight in Bhubaneswar at the moment and it's a landlord's market).
The bathroom is VERY tiny - it's a toilet space with a shower included (and also is the laundray)! But it all works (any bathroom in India is a 'wet space' so water going everywhere is fine - everything dries so fast anyway).
The place has been only recently renovated by the owners (Sarita's family) and done pretty lovingly from what I can see - clean and neat and lots of
Across room towards courtyard
My king size bed and the guitar I got in Delhi. equipment so's I don't have to go an furnish the place. The place was built to accommodate guest to the NGO etc... but has not been used much at all apparently.
The kitchen is great - gas top. fridge, utensils all there.
I use the two ceiling fans a LOT - one is on all night at the moment - sleeping under a mozzie net as well (one bloody mozzie was trapped inside last night the buggar - got me until I found him this morning - made a bloody mess when I squished the bastard!!).
The area is quite peaceful really - about 12 klms from the city centre - lots of small market shops just up the road for basic goods and necessities.
So.... pics tell the story
