Day 15: Cochin - Thekkady 2 October 2017 This morning after breakfast, we drove to Thekkady (191 km/ 4.5 hrs approx.). It was another beautiful drive with better roads. There were rubber plantations, coffee trees, pineapples, and as we climbed higher, tea plantations. On arrival to Thekkady, we found a casual restaurant which had a lot of Indians so we knew it would have good food – and it did. After lunch we checked into our hotel. Soon after Debbie and I decided to have a massage on the recommendation of Mohar. It was one of the most ‘interesting’massage I have had. I totally undressed and was put on a firm table on my back and a large amount of heated ‘medicinal’ oil was poured over me. The lady whipped me into shape!!!! I wasn’t comfortable ... read more

Day 13 & 14: Ooty & Cochin 30 September - 1 October 2017 After breakfast, we left Ooty, and drove to Cochin (a journey of about 300 km/ 7 hrs drive approx). The commercial capital of Kerala and the most cosmopolitan of the state’s cities, Cochin or Kochi have long been eulogized in tourist literature as the ‘Queen of the Arabian Sea’. Strategically located on the east–west sea route, Cochin is Kerala’s major port, boasting of one of the finest natural harbours in the world, which forms the hub around which the city revolves. With its wealth of historical associations and its setting on a cluster of islands and narrow peninsula, the city of Kochi perfectly reflects the eclecticism of Kerala. Apart from being a major commercial hub, Kochi is also a major tourist attraction in ... read more

I had been reluctant to leave our houseboat and the tranquillity of the backwaters, but when I saw Turtle Beach, the hotel at our destination in Marari Beach, in Alleppey my spirits soared. The hotel was a series of detached cottages spread over beautiful grounds including a large swimming pool, fishing lake, organic vegetable garden and a butterfly garden leading on to a private beach. It was the largest and most westernised of our accommodation, but it looked like an ideal place to end the trip. I had lost track of time during our tour and was under the impression that we were staying for one night and leaving in the early hours the next day. When I found out that we were in fact staying two nights, I was delighted - it felt as if ... read more

Asia » India » Kerala » Periyar National Park August 10th 2017

After a very early breakfast of croissants and omelettes, we set off for a forest hike in the Periyar wildlife park, one of the largest national parks in India. It is set high in the cardamom hills and is home to many species of animals and birds including sloth, tigers and elephants. As we were visiting in the monsoon season, we knew that our chances of spotting wild life were limited, but we set off feeling optimistic. We were kitted out with leech socks to protect us from the leeches that are particularly prevalent in monsoon season. The five of us headed off into the forest led by a park ranger as a guide. Unfortunately, he wasn’t very talkative or proactive and it was more a case of us stopping him to ask him to name ... read more

A trip along the back waters of Alleppey in a beautiful houseboat has turned out to be a holiday highlight. The change in weather was immediately apparent as we stepped off the tour bus into glorious sunshine with a gentle breeze - vastly different from the cooler climate in the cardamom hills. We loaded our kit onto a small boat which chugged us upstream to board the houseboat that would be out accommodation for the next day or so. I couldn't get over how comfortable and spacious the boat was - there were three large double rooms with ensuite bathrooms, and Charlie was thrilled to have his own room for the first time this trip. There was a dining table and chairs on the front deck, and six armchairs were arranged around the side of the ... read more

The northern leg of our tour complete, we headed south on a four-hour flight to Cochin. The flight was straightforward, but it took us another two hours to drive to our hotel in Cochin (now renamed Kochi) due to heavy traffic. It was immediately noticeable that we were in the South, as there were palm trees everywhere, the roads were in much better condition and the signage was in the curly script of the local language - Malayalam. We finally arrived at The Old Harbour Hotel, a few minutes from the waterfront, in Fort Cochin. It was our most luxurious accommodation on the tour so far. We were delighted to find that our rooms had been upgraded, and Nigel and I had a cottage room that had an outdoor shower and French doors that opened on ... read more

Since I started travel blogging, most of my trips were backpack trips without much prior planning. However, that's not the case when I go on vacation with family. Having 3 children, unless I choose a destination which has a lot of activities for children, my vacation would probably be spoiled. So, every time I plan a trip, the first challenge I have to face is, whether this is going to be a backpacking trip or a family vacation. This travel story is all about a backpacking trip to Kuttikkanam, which is an unspoilt holiday destination in the Kottayam - Kumily road, pretty close to Thekkady, the popular tourist destination in Kerala. A backpacking trip usually means business to me, combined with a break from the busy life in the office. That's the best part for a ... read more

Kerala, a state on the Malabar coast in southern India is probably one of the most popular Indian tourist destinations. It has been popular among tourists - couples, families & backpackers alike for the longest time - perhaps because geographically it is the complete travel package - It has everything from serene beaches to scenic hills, from tea & spice plantations to dense forests & calm backwaters. Apart from scenic beauty, it is popular for Ayurvedic treatments, classical dances - Kathakali & Mohiniattam, Kalaripayattu & of course, it’s delicious cuisine. We’ve had Kerala on our bucket list for the longest time, Not wanting to miss out on anything, we planned a tight 5 days trip covering Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady, Allepy & Poovar, planning to stay in each place for a day We ended up booking hotels ... read more

Planning a trip is overwhelming, from narrowing down to the place to selecting what to see and do, to all the reservations. Having received mixed reviews from my friends and colleagues, I turned to trip advisor and many travel journals for essential information, for example, package cost, weather, travel, food and so on. I had planned for “God’s Own Country—Kerala”. I have had Kerala on my bucket list for the longest time, not wanting to miss anything; so I planned a tight four days trip with a travel agent covering Munnar, Thekkady, and Alleppey planning to stay for a day each in Thekkady, Alleppey and in Munnar for two days. Many had told me about Kochi’s culture and historic importance, but I was far more interested in getting rid of the hustle bustle of the downtown. ... read more

The Secret Garden Heritage Hotel is aptly named as I find out on my twisting and turning tuktuk drive to find my final hotel of this amazing trip to southern India. I'd found the hotel by chance online and as soon as I saw the photos showing off their gorgeous antique Indian furniture, the elegant balconies, the wooden carvings, the four poster beds with beautiful Indian design coverings and the pool I just couldn't resist splashing out and treating myself to three extra days on my own at the end of my G-Adventures trip. I am welcomed with a freshly squeezed pineapple juice and then taken to my gorgeous room. The standard is quite a notch up from those I'd gotten used to on my adventure travel tour. So I'm blown away by the luxury and ... read more
