Woolly says – Our last day in Kochi arrived with the sun blazing in, a slow get up and the need to pack everything back into the bags, it never ceases to amaze me how much mess can suddenly disappear into two backpacks and three rucksacks, but it does. A breakfast of boiled egg and toast hit the mark well and we set off to amble around the fort town for the last time. Fort Kochi has little left and is now more about the small town rather than the fort itself, the Fort was built in 1538 as a Portuguese settlement and remained in their possession until 1683, when the Dutch colonial troops captured the territory and destroyed the Portuguese institutions. The Dutch held the fort in their possession until 1795, when the British took ... read more

Woolly says – As we stood waiting for our days transport to arrive I hoped that we had made the right decision in booking onto a tour, Jo, bless her, had worked out a route to take us from Kochi an hour down the coast to Alleppey, which had involved two longish rickshaw rides a train journey and the chance that on arrival we might not be able to find a boat to take us out. All things considered we had voted unanimously to try another tour, I tapped my paws as the minutes passed and decided that I might have time to give the girls some much needed information on our day out……. As he retrieved several pieces of paper from his backpack I had an inkling as to what might be coming. Woolly says ... read more

Woolly says – Our journey from Madurai took around nine hours, it just seemed like a lifetime. Having been unsuccessful in procuring train tickets we had our first bus journey to look forward to. Climbing on board and finding our seats was the easy part, the lack of space, even with legs as small as mine and Jo’s, once the seats were reclined, was small, it also meant that the person who was reclining towards you had their head nearly on your lap. It was a long night as we went over huge bumps in the road at speed nearly jolting my tusks out of place, listening to the constant barrage of honking and blaring horns in between the snores from the gent in front of us. Our arrival in Kochi at six in the morning ... read more

For different people, oceans can mean different things. For some, it may mean beaches and seashores with a lot of surface adventures. To others, it means something deeper than that. My entire perception of the oceans got altered in a major way recently – Thanks to Bond Safari of Kovalam in Kerala. One may have seen a lot of marine life videos from sources such as Discovery and Animal Planet and even YouTube these days. But when we watch such videos, we think that such activities are really complicated to be carried out by the majority of ordinary people who do not have much knowledge of the marine life. Thanks to Bond Safari, having such experiences are not impossible in Kerala anymore. During November 2017, I visited Kovalam and enjoyed the beauty of this coastal village ... read more

I booked the Crowne Plaza Kochi hotel thinking I had picked free cancellation option - for 3 nights over the Christmas period - apparently I was sorely mistaken. Unfortunately I had to book 2 rooms as there are no family suites which is why I was looking for free cancellation option. Now that I have found something else that suits our needs better with young children, I have tried to cancel but am being hit with not 1 but 2 cancellation fees. Both rooms x1 night. I selected the waive option in booking.com to no avail. I have also contacted the hotel via booking.com explaining my mistake and offering to pay for 1 room for the first night. No dice. It's like as if it's not peak holiday season & they won't be able to re-sell ... read more

After a short flight from Colombo we are back in India in Kerala State , Cochi which is an old Portuguese town. The airport is in the new commercial part but we are picked up by "Reggie" and taken to Fort Cochi which is the old port and Old Harbour Hotel which is a lovely old colonial building. We are here for one night but then back in 6 days for another night and then to Bangaram Is for 4 nights and back to hotel again. We are quite keen to have a drink and the hotel has beer and Indian wine but we decide to go out to find a wee bar. We pretty quickly find out that there is no such thing and in fact there is only one government wine shop (wine shop ... read more

Day 18: Kumarakom - Cochin - Australia 5 & 6 October 2017 Today was home time. I decided to do a workout in the gym at the hotel. That was great, even though some of the equipment didn’t work. Unfortunately, they were fixing the pool so there was no swimming allowed. Tom went down to breakfast while I was at the gym. I later went to breakfast and the rest of the day was spent packing and getting our blog and travel diary and photos up to date. We were picked up at 4.30pm by a driver in a car and taken to the Kochi International Airport. This was a 3-hour journey in the peak hour traffic of India. The final cold beer in the airport bar was an opportunity to think about the last 4 ... read more

Day 17: Alleppey - Kumarakom 4 October 2017 Kumarakom is a popular tourism destination located near the city of Kottayam famous for its backwater tourism. Debbie was keen to buy some copper pots and Moran said there might be some for sale in the markets of Kottayam. We parked the van and walked along the busy market street, moving from one shop to another. The results where that we both bought sari material and Deb also found several small copper bowls but sadly, no large ones were found. The men also found a café which sold excellent cappuccino so we all had one, including Mohan. Fishing, agriculture and tourism are the major economic activities in this area. Kumarakom's perfectly balanced tropical climate is very conducive to cultivation. The place has expanses of mangrove forests, paddy fields ... read more

Day 16: Thekkady - Alleppey (or Alappuzha) 3 October 2017 This morning, we drove to Alleppey (130 km/ 3.5 hrs approx). The drive was moving down the tea-covered slopes, again, admiring the scenery the deep valleys offered. Upon arrival, we boarded the traditional rice boat, which offered an on-suite bedroom with fan and air conditioner. It had everything we needed on board – fridge, hot water, dining room, a large balcony above the dining room, a chef, captain and 2 waiters for the 4 of us. Before we got onto the boat, Mohan took us to an alcohol outlet, all of which are owned and controlled by the government. We saw a line of men in front of the non-premium grilled-secured counter, buying cheap spirits and beer. There was also a secured premium wine outlet which ... read more
