Last night we transferred all unnecessary gear into one case and left it at the hotel in Delhi, we entered the car taking us to the airport at 4 am packed breakfast in one hand extreme cold sleeping bags in the other, we arrived at the airport in plenty of time for our early morning flight. The flight to the Himalayan city of Leh took a little over an hour and a half, the views of the mountain peaks projecting through the clouds were truly breathtaking. We were met at the city's tiny airport by Tharpa our guide who showed us to our hotel, the temperature is -8 degrees but the sky was clear and there was no wind so the cold was not too bad. Leh has a particular Tibetan feel about it, clean fresh ... read more

8 days spread over a 63 kilometres maze. 1040 ft to 13750 ft. Hot, humid and sultry to heaven beneath our feet. Six beautiful high-altitude lakes, personally designed by Nature. Sheep Horses Mules beware! A camp, surrounded by flowers, to share and that one warm blessed sleeping bag to wear. 10 kg rucksack and those dependable shoes with cracks. Walking 63 degrees uphill, 40 degrees downhill, on crooked wooden planks on top of water streams running in romance, minding every step on jurassic park-style boulders, finding our foothold on fresh snow corridors, sprinting through the green meadows, counting a hundred shooting stars under the moon's shadow. Kashmir Great Lakes. Was it a vacation? A tour? A journey? A sight seeing trip? A trek? I felt it was much more than that! It was an experience! An ... read more

Ladakh is and will be one of my favourite travel destinations ever. The picturesque landscapes and beautiful valleys always leave me awestruck. Nestled in the laps of Himalayas, Ladakh is an eye candy for nature enthusiasts. The numerous Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh give an insight into the religion and the teachings of Buddhism. The best way to reach to Ladakh is via road. Manali to Leh on motorbike is one of the most famous road trips and is on the bucket list of many people. I haven’t been on a road trip from Manali to Leh but have read that it is one of the most scenic rides and it offers a magnificent view of the Himalayas as you ride along. Since we had only a week off from work , we couldn’t plan for the ... read more

In Hinduism, Vaishno Devi, also known as Mata Rani and Vaishnavi, is a manifestation of the Mother Goddess or Durga. The words "maa" and "mata" are commonly used in India for "mother", and thus are often used in connection with Vaishno Devi. The words "mandir" and "mandira" are commonly used in India for "Hindu temple", and so these words are also often used in connection with Vaishno Devi. Vaishno Devi Mandir (Hindi: वैष्णोदेवी मन्दिर) (Punjabi: ਵ... read more

Ladakh is located on the Northern tip of India bordering Tibet (now China). Most people in Ladakh are of Tibetan/Ladakhi Buddhist lineage. It's an extremely friendly place with lots of foreigners, mainly from Europe. Reaching Ladakh is a pain given that there is not enough connectivity with the rest of the country. But that is probably what makes this place a great one since it is still less mainstream than other places in India. Here are some pictures on the way to Pangong Lake in Ladakh.... read more

I am rather fond of mountains. This fondness has taken me to some beautiful places around the world but had somehow not led me to the Himalayas. The first view from the aeroplane window on the short hop north from Delhi to Leh was cracking and had passengers scrambling over each other to take pictures. It was straight from a geography textbook with hanging glaciers, sharp arêtes, medial and lateral moraines and other such features that Mr Oakes of Edlington School will be proud that I remembered. You are advised to not do too much for a few days upon arrival at Leh in order to acclimatise to the altitude. Wise advice considering Leh sits at about 3500m and has the highest commercial airport in the world. You don’t have to fly there; the overland routes ... read more

Again 2 days in one. From Lhakang 4700m to Ramjak 4400m but over the HIGHEST pass of the trek: Shingo La 5095m! The day after Ramjak 4400m to Palamo 3700m and then.... So, first we went over the famous Shingo La, although it was our highest pass, it wasn't the hardest, we were now in top shape and very well acclimatized. Like you'll see in the video, after that it was all down hill. During the night we also had our lowest temperature of the trip -3°C. But it all went downhill with our horsemen too, we really wanted to stay in another camping that night as it fitted our plans much better, but as Shashi is more stubborn than his mules he chose differently. Now I told him what I thought of all this and ... read more

Today we went from the foot of Gumbarajon to the Lhakang, Shingo La Base camp (4740m). We didn't go over the pass today as after the pass there will be a long descend. And also it cuts a big climb into 2! But it's getting colder and colder. Today was also a very short day, so we had to wait at the base-camp for several hours. I didn't feel like climbing anything around us as it was to cold. So I decided to give this camping ground a major clean up! (In special honor of my sister Ann-Laure) You have to know that there is no garbage truck driving around here! With the previous horseman, we managed to explain to him that we wanted to keep all of our garbage with us so we could throw ... read more

First things first... On this first picture of our campsite you can see 2 bicycles. Of course they're not ours :-) They belong to a Polish couple who's traveling around the world with their bicycles! The have been around for more than a year now. But what's the most crazy, amazing, incredible, is that they are doing the same route as us since Padum! And as you could see there are no roads here. For some practical reason they had decided to go over the pass this way, because by road it would have taken them more than a month, while here they could do it in 10 days. But what they didn't realize was that there are really no cyclable roads here. So they ended up pushing there bikes for a couple of meters, going ... read more
