December 27th2013 Been walking my mind to an easy time, my back turned towards the sun Lord knows when the cold wind blows it will turn your head around Fire and Rain, James Taylor We are well into Gujarat now, and the roads are good and uncluttered. I change to reserve tank and figure (as usual) that I will have no trouble filling at the next pump. Ha! I come up short by about 5 kms. This is where riding with someone is great. India is a country of workshops. Most Indian ladies buy fabric and get a tailor to make up garments specifically for them rather than buying 'ready made'. I decided to follow suit. On the recommendation of our guesthouse manager I went to look for "Bandhej" a shop well known for it's bandhani or tie-dye fabrics - a speciality of the area. Tie-dye is a simple but time consuming process. Material is folded in half several times until it becomes a small square or rectangle. A design is then marked on the cloth using a wooden block. A bandhani crafts person, who purposely allows the thumb and forefinger nail to grow long for use as a pair of pincers, ties the marked areas into tiny knots. Gujarat... A state not as well known to us Westerners as are other ones such as Rajasthan, Goa, Kashmir, etc... And it makes it very interesting because I can really feel like this is a more authentic indian place, where people are not as used to tourists as they are in more tourist-oriented places. It is not that remote, but still, it is far from the big markets you find in Goa, or the 10 page menus you see in restaurants trying to cater to everybody with american, italian, chinese and israeli food all in one place. Gujarat is very close to Pakistan with a mix of hindu and muslim cultures, a very dry and hot climate right now, and the same noisy organized chaos one can find everywhere in INdia!!!
