Making our way to the guest house (Comfort House) that we’d booked via email we got lost a couple of times, lugging our luggage around. I was relying on my 10 year old memory of the place and despite asking for directions still managed to get lost a few times. Brens showed remarkable tolerance, she was tired and starting to get annoyed probably but kept her cool and soldiered on. Perhaps being in H.K. had something to do with it. It’s vibrant (a word I’ll be using often) and exciting. It’s a place that busying around is the natural thing to do even if you’re busy getting lost! And get lost we did, often, though most folks in H.K. speak English and asking for directions is easy, the place itself is pretty congested and it’s easy ... read more

I made it to Hong Kong and awaited the arrival of my first traveling partner from home....Joe Cov. We were only in Hong Kong for a quick night and left the next afternoon for Beijing. I will be back in Hong Kong later this month and will explore it then. It was a bit cloudy and thus my photos are a bit grey. We did manage to venture up to The Peak which overlooks the Harbor. You cant help but be amazed at the tremendous buildings in Hong Kong (even though I hail from NYC). To get to the peak, we took a double-decker bus and sat on top of the driver. He must have forgotten it was a huge bus as he drove like a formula one driver. While I usually like fast driving, I ... read more

Summing up April - Part 2 April 10 Big day off! What shall we do? I know, let’s kill Martha with an exceptionally fast hike in 85 degrees /100% humidity with cloud cover at 25 ft. Late start. What’s new. Figure out which bus to take to Aberdeen because that’s where we shall pick up the Hong Kong trail. Catch one on Queens Road & it turns out to be a rather a long bus ride taking us to the southern part of HK Island to a bus terminus on Aberdeen Main Rd & Aberdeen Reservoir Rd. The day is dreary and dripping and since it is late, we don’t stop to explore Aberdeen, though it’s worth a look some other day. We walk up Aberdeen Reservoir Rd, then cut off on Peel Road which quickly ... read more

Headed out to Macau on 2nd May, the point was to take advantage of the cheap flight on AirAsia to Macau and then take the ferry across to H.K. First sight of Macau from the air was cool, the plane circled around the city giving us a great view of casinos, the tower and the double humped bridge. Macau international airport seemed deserted. Caught a taxi to the ferry terminal (50HK$) and had no trouble getting a ticket to HK (Kawloon) for 150HK$ each. Ferries depart every 15 min. We caught the ‘First Ferry’ line which was ok. Went through immigration and down to the boat. We were asked to store our bags in the luggage area (in this case in the front) and got to our seats. Noticed that the ticketers would give couples and ... read more

26th Thursday ñ The Airport transfer is painful. We wait (for the rest of the transfer passengers from other hotels to arrive) n we wait (for the bus to come) n we wait (for our turn to alight at our hotel). ñ (@ Dinner) I am absolutely satisfied with the night tour because I am convinced we would not have attained so many things w/o professional arrangement. And of course, the dinner at 全聚德 rox! We had the honour of being the last to leave the tables and cleaning every single morsel of Peking duck off the plates (we convinced ourselves we should not waste food). ñ (@ Z Peak) Victoria Peak Night View is simply stunning. Equally stunning are some apartments up the hill. Am so so so … in love with the scenery. I ... read more

Summing up April - Part 1 April 5 Finally got the Internet access up and running! Had the usual Language Barrier when it was installed the previous Saturday - I asked if my other connection via SBC needed to be removed, but that did not compute with the tech. The install tech didn’t know much about Macs, but then I don’t know much about Macs either. Signed off on his installation and it worked fine till he left, then kaput. I fiddled with it all weekend, then relented and called the un-helpdesk at PCCW. Very nice & polite, but clueless. They set up a tech appointment (as if this would solve the issue). In my fiddling I found my way to the correct screen and removed the SBC connection. Gee, it worked. Now I have loads ... read more

April 3 It’s Sunday and we’re going to Lamma Island today. The usual late start gets us to the ferry pier off of Man Kwong St in Central by the early afternoon. The piers are all clearly marked so there is not a problem getting to the right one. However, there is plenty of construction going on by the harbor that makes it hard to find your way sometimes. Construction is the biz to be in here - it’s unusual to see a street without something being repaired, renovated, or razed. And we pay for the trip with our _______ card (fill in the blank). A rather large crowd of families and tourists is forming in the waiting area, so it’s going to be full boat. Piling in, we head to the top deck and grab ... read more

Hong Kong is a city of contradictions, from bird's nest shops in one street to Pizza Express in the next. It is possible to walk from the hustle and bustle of Soho and find oneself in front of the Man Mo temple, an oasis of incense. Some of the most interesting streets are those near Hollywood and Possesion streets where shops sell herbs and spices in canvas bags, fish lie drying on the pavement and antiques stores sell vast quantities of jade. We saw skyscrapers being built using scaffolding made of bamboo which went all the way to the top of these huge buildings. On our first day in Hong Kong, we took a trip on the Central-Mid-Levels Escalator, apparently the longest in the world. For me, it was a bit of a disappointment, it was ... read more

I had been to HK for a week in November on my way home for the summer and had been impressed by how much of the place was NOT a city. 70% of Hong Kong is 'green' i.e. tress and stuff, and 40% is designated as country parks. I was so impressed by this that I wanted to investigate the region more and hence it is my first stop outside the land of OZ. As well as this however, the trip to this region is also with an eye to business. China by the middle of this century will become the dominant economy of the world and it is the region directly above HK that will be and is the place were this will or I should say is occurring. So it was while I was ... read more

Our last day in Hong Kong didn’t go as planned. We planned to go to Ocean Park, but when we awoke this morning it was pouring rain which means, shopping again. POOR DAD! One great thing about this city is being able to get from place to place without ever going outside. The subway is so perfectly connected that we can go from shopping mall to shopping mall for days on end without getting wet. How long Dad can hold up is another question! Yesterday we took the tram to Causeway Bay. We were missing “good old” American food so we were excited to eat lunch at Outback Restaurant. You might be thinking… that’s Australian food not American., but it was our favorite restaurant in Orlando so we felt like we were back home. We ... read more
