We realize we haven't been blogging as much as we had the past 2 years living in China. I think part of it is the novelty of living here has worn off and things just aren't as shocking anymore. Don't get me wrong though everyday is still an adventure living here. For example, when we returned from our trip to Singapore and Malaysia and started teaching again we found out on Day 1 of being back that we would have the following 2 days off of work due to the 8th National Disabled Games being held in Hangzhou from October 10-19th. I highly doubt the officials planned this event over the National Day break but that is how information is kept on the totem pole. Higher ranked officials now the plan and the lowest ranked (foreign ... read more

After the birthday celebrations on Tuesday, Datri and I were looking at the calendar, and noting that we had no other breaks in the schedule after our current week off, decided that we needed to get out of town again, even though we'd just recently went to Putuoshan. We had to be back for a dinner with the Producers and Managers on the 20th, so that meant only one night away, and preferably somewhere relatively easy to travel too. After a couple ideas, we decided on Hangzhou, a city that the company will actually visit later in the tour, but only for one day, and that likely means that I won't get to see any of it, and she won't get to see much. Thus, we'll visit now. A few stops and two changes on the ... read more

We arrived safely in China after an eleven hour flight from Seattle to Seoul, Korea and a 90 minute flight from Seoul to Shanghai. Once we arrived we got through customs and received our bags quite quickly. We hit our 1st bump in the road when we called the Howard Johnson hotel to pick us up. I had booked it on the Wyndham Rewards website so we could get mileage for Rapid Rewards, they offered “Free Airport Shuttle” and it was the most reasonable in price and proximity to Pudong Airport. Well it seems the website lied as there was no free shuttle and it would take 40-60 minutes to get there. For those of you who know China it was located near Pudong not Hongqiao the airport on the other side of Shanghai. So we ... read more

Thursday 6/30: Lots of green scenes! West Lake, Tea Plantation, Buddhist Monastery Today toured Hangzhou's exceptional West Lake (Xi Hu), which is about 3 miles across and 9 miles around. The area around the lake is filled with islets and temples, pavilions and gardens, causeways and arched bridges, which have constituted the supreme example of lakeside beauty in China ever since Hangzhou served as China's capital during the Southern Song Dynasty. We began with a ½ hour walk through the beautiful gardens towards the boat dock. During the tour, we saw: Solitary Island (Gushan Dao), situated on the lake's northwest shore, connected to the mainland by the Xiling Bridge, dedicated to poet Su Xiaoxiao (picture of her tomb later), who was entombed here in AD 501; and the Bai Causeway (Bai Ti), which connects Solitary Island ... read more

Hello again friends! The last time I wrote to you I had just arrived in Hangzhou for the International Conference on Social Cognition and Neuroscience. That has now been completed and I am back in Jinhua! So, let me catch you up on all that I have been up to over the past week. After arriving in Hangzhou, we were driven to our amazing conference resort, where we were all given private suites to stay in for the duration of the conference. It was so nice! I had hot water for my shower, a comfy bed with an actual normal mattress, and even a balcony. On the first full day of the conference, we drove to Zhejiang Sci-Tech University for the opening ceremonies and initial presentations. Researchers from all over the world attended- China, Canada, U.S., ... read more

Should've taken my camera last night, but hadn't realised the restaurant would offer such a wealth of photo opportunities. We met up with the Russian family (parents, teenage girl and wee boy) and they suggested a favourite restaurant of theirs over the other side of the river. It's near a korean place we've been to, and on one of my running routes, but is quite expensive so not somewhere we've been before. It was very posh inside with a whole wall lined with fish tanks. I'd say 98% of the restaurants here have fish tanks, but you can tell the quality of a place by how clean they keep them, and these were immaculate. There were crabs of all sizes along with all the usual fishy creatures. The restaurant was a hot pot restaurant, which was ... read more

Hello again friends! It was yet another busy week here in China. On Sunday, I went with my friends Weifang, Liyang, and Haizhen to Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province. We had to get up VERY early in the morning (I was up at 4:45!) in order to catch the 6:00 train out of Jinhua. It was about a 2 1/2 hour train ride to get to the city. Once we arrived, Liyang's brother-in-law picked us up at the station and then dropped us off at Zhejiang University, where we met up with Liutao, a friend of Weifang's who is currently working on his PhD in chemistry. He gave us a tour of the campus and then took us out for lunch at a restaurant inside the university. By now, everyone has learned what my favorite ... read more

Exciting times in Tonglu. Rachael and I have lots of weekends away in the diary now, and our last mini holiday to book. We have four days off at the beginning of May and we're trying to decide between going to Suzhou, which is a city, and a beach. I've wanted to go to Suzhou for a while, but kind of feel that we've seen several in the last few months and that it might be nice to do something completely different. No doubt the beach will have temples in the vicinity anyway! I need to check the weather and accommodation etc but I've got my fingers crossed for a beach break. Actually, the weather's been gorgeous up until today. I'm very close to becoming addicted to the mango milkshakes from a new shop near the ... read more

We went to a new bar tonight. I went the first time I came to China, but, much like most of the bars in Glasgow, it's changed ownership many times since then. It's current incarnation is called something like 'musibar' and it's our new favourite place :) We went in peak time but it wasn't too smoky. The people were friendly but not in your face and thankfully didn't do that thing of coming to sit at your table and drink your alcohol. There were prostitutes there of course, but I think because Rach and i were there they left our table alone. The music was all western, and I recognised most of it. Some real classics as well as newer stuff. They did that annoying DJ thing of mixing between two songs so you never ... read more

I have returned to China with a vengeance! Flying into Hong Kong on a misty and rainy night I only stayed as long as it took me to get a new Chinese visa. I wanted a six month multiple entry, what I got was a two month double entry with the added rule that after one month I have to leave the country and re-enter it. So a great start to China you could say! The visa took 4 days to process in the meantime I spent my days in this great city staring moodily at the fog which didn't want to evaporate, looking glumly at the clouds overhead which sprinkled rain on my head as if mocking me and trying my hardest to discern the famous sky-line this town is famous for. To keep me ... read more
