Day 7Lijiang at Last Bad news all round today. I succumbed to Beijing Belly last night and had a very bad night. No breakfast but managed to ride all day on very little to eat, three biscuits in the morning and a bowl of rice at lunch. The road this morning was quite cool until late again, I think because of the altitude, which was about 2300m and rising. After morning coffee we turned up the old Lijiand Road, which was 10km of hairpin bends followed by more hairpin bends and 2km of further climbing on to a plain where potatoes were the main crop at 2,800m. However on the descent of a very rough road indeed Roger fell off on a very poorly surfaced bend and when the next rider arrived he was unconscious for ... read more

Geo: 27.8205, 99.7074From PanZhiHua I decided to get the bus to Lijiang firstly which is around 9 hours away, from the hotel I tried to get a taxi but they were all full and I was getting tight for time after collecting my visa in the morning. One of the ‘minivan' taxi's said he would take me for 12 yuen but that's double the taxi fare so I declined, instead one of the guys hanging around the hotel (looking for work I think) said he would take me for 6 yuen on his motorbike so without hesitation I jumped on and I was handed a yellow hardhat to wear, I must have looked a picture! Although helmets are not compulsory here, many wear their work hard hats on their bikes as helmets, they're all red or ... read more

Wow! It feels like we haven't stopped for the last few weeks. It's been a very busy time getting through Western Sichuan (way back when we were in the mountains) and Yunnan (from Shangri-La until now). There was a lot to see and that meant only stopping for a few days at a time in one place. While we have been constantly on the go, we were able to see a lot and definitely made the right choices along the way. This section of China has also been the most difficult mentally; after we left Chengdu (the city with the Panda reserve) we also left English menus and English-speaking locals behind. The only time we came across English-speaking locals in the last month was at our youth hostels front desk or the odd student wanting to ... read more

Day 6Jinchuan Old TownThe road to Jinchuan today in constant sun, as usual, although coolish on bare arms until later in morning. The first 30k was along the valley heading North along what is a very busy route for lorries and every conceivable vehicle known to China, mostly the small trucks driven by donkey engines (single and twin cylinder diesels which make a loud knock when accelerated). The small trucks looked like they were in convoy there were that many of them heading to town. Those heading our way almost gassed us unless we could pass them, which was not always difficult especially on hills. The hills came in a big way with hairpin after hairpin for 25k and with a rough road surface in many places, especially on the bends. On the descent we also ... read more

Day 5Eryuan Hot SpringsFlat riding today except a hill just above Shaping as we left the top of Lake Erhai. This hill is on the edge of a quarry producing slate for roof tiles, pillars and other fancy stonework and marble for tiles and a huge range of vessels. These products can be seen at the side of the very narrow and busy road and in the small businesses producing them by hand and with very basic machinery. We saw ploughing with two water buffalos pulling a one furrow wooden plough and just behind it a large tractor ploughing with modern machinery. This was the sixth large tractor seen this trip as opposed to just one when I came three years ago.As we approached Eryuan we saw a coal briquette yard where coal is ground to ... read more

The beds are so hard that I am struggling to sleep. It took several hours and many shifts of position to get any sleep at all and the the next I heard was my phone ringing at 9am. It was our guide David wanting to know if we had gone to the wrong restaurant since he had not seen us. Us being myself and room mate Jeff from Oz. Today was a steady day roaming around the many streets of this ancient city established in 1382 but much of it rebuilt in the last 20 years or so as a major tourist city occupied by mostly Bai minority people in their distinctive white and blue dresses and fancy head dresses not unlike the American Indians without the feathers. The city is set out in a grid ... read more

Dali, City of Minorities Eight ’o’ clock breakfast of noodles and some spicy stuff, no bacon and eggs yet, and then off at nine following 42 miles round Lake Eyrian anticlockwise. No sooner had we set off than John’s pedal fell off as we were travelling through the edge of town. The threads were damaged so we put the pedal in from the other side to clear the threads and it went in again, thankfully, so off we went again. The ride north along the lake started with tar macadam which eventually reduced to dirt and loose stone. The scenery was very interesting with first of all fishing in the lake. There were boats out on the lake fishing with nets and many fishermen at the lake side with nets going out on ropes using winches. ... read more

Mount Jizu Temple We were looking at a long day today so up at 6.35 for 7 'o' clock start to have breakfast of noodles and some unknown things to help us on our way. The one thing about Chinese meals is that you know the format of rice, noodles, cabbage etc but never know how hot the peppers are going to be until 2 minutes later and your palate shrieks out in pain. The first thing after breakfast in the lock up garage was to go up Mt Jizu by way of a 10 seater golf type buggy to the Gondola. Once out of the gondola about 300 steps got us to the top puffing and panting at 3,200m altitude. The temples up there were quite impressive with all the Buddha's on display and the ’Teapots’ where the ... read more

Binchuan or BustDay 1 Up at 6.50 for shower and breakfast. Then theory was that we would be away at 8.30, but as is usual it got to 9 'o' clock before we were off on our 200 mile + journey by coach to Binchuan. Lunch was had 10 miles before Binchuan at a restaurant which cooks fish caught in the lake outside. This was very good but we must have dawdled because when we got to Binchuan and our bikes put together again it was after 4.30. Theoretically it was 27k to Mt Jizu but it turned out to be 25 miles of hard climbing of well over 1100 m, to a height of 2,800m and we arrived in the dark at about 8 'o' clock. We were a bit strung out by then and ... read more

Here I am at home just about ready to set off for Kunming for the 2012 tour of the area from Binchuan to as far north as the Tiger Leaping Gorge on the Yangtze just above the first bend in the river. I have packed my bike in a soft bag and a small suitcase for my hand luggage. On a tour like this you need to travel light and wash your clothes frequently, which I do in the showwer each night, wring them out in a towel and hope they are dry next day. This was a problem in N Vietnam due to the high altitude and cool weather for the first week. I am not looking forward to the flights, which seem to take forever, and the airport boredom and officialdom. We get in ... read more
