Quinghai Railway. This was one of the highlights of the tour more so that the Everest Base Camp is now closed. After checking out of the hotel at 0800hrs I had problem getting a taxi and in the end had to settle for a motorised cycle rickshaw. It appeared that they were not allowed to carry foreigners as he was doing everything he can to avoid any police, there were plenty of them at every corner, on the route. The alternative was for me to hide my face to prevent recognition. The navigator maps were great as they were "off-line" which saved me a few times. The rickshaw was trying to take me to the bus station that run buses directly to the airport. So much for communication. At the station some of the information was ... read more

Two full days in Lhasa, also know as the "Forbidden City" due until recently its inaccessibility. While now a large city,Lhasa only has a small Tibetan Quarter renowned for its temples & monasteries in and around the ancient Barkhor Street. The street is round with tiny alleyways off to the side and surrounds the Jokhang Temple (sacred to Tibetan Buddhists) and is a place full of religious atmosphere with prostrating pilgrims and a world of exotic trading. The inside of Jokhang is incrediably ornate & inspiring with endless numbers of devotees following rituals that are difficult to understand. No photos allowed. On a hill overlooking Lhasa & Barkhor Street the skyline is dominated by the Potala Palace (meaning Nirvana), historically the home of all the Dalai Lamas. The palace was built in 2 stages. The red ... read more

Happy New Year!! Apparently it is 2072 in Hindu Nepal. If today was happy, I would hate to experience a sad day. A 1 hour plane ride took 9 hrs + 2 hrs time loss difference to get from Kathmandu to Lhasa due to very slow clearance through border security at both ends + a backlog of delayed flights. No food between early breakfast & dinner. The flight views over the Himilayas can be spectacular but today was cloudy & regardless nothing to see from the middle section of the plane. Lhasa sits at 3650 meters with considerably less oxygen in the air but surprisingly no noticeable change in breathing. Decided not to take Diamox based on previous altitude experience seemed like a good decision. Arrival in Lhasa was a massive contrast compared to Kmd. Cool, ... read more

Car 5 Unit 8 Bunk 32 … The Train from Lhasa to Beijing One of three major goals during this China trip was to take this train from Lhasa to Beijing. My excellent consultant from accesstibet arranged for the ticket. All the cold facts can be gleaned from the site below. The pic of Lhasa station I took from the internet. Its too huge for my little camera. It is the biggest station ever and has brought about massive change to the city of Lhasa ... positive and negative. http://www.tibettravel.org/qinghai-tibet-railway/scenery.html ....Derek Wong ... FACES OF TIBET. Some places you go because you have to...some because you need to...some because the opportunity arises...some because the road leads you there...some because you dream that nags your soul...and some because you can. Tibet was for those reasons and more...one of those destinations I dreamed about but never dreamed I could. Then one day I just did. ***** I'd had two trips to China...one with friends to a number of provences that put the taste of adventure deep in my psyche...one with Denise that I planned and led myself...that my Chinese friends said was to bandit country, putting Denise into danger...zig-zagging the country...fantastic times. Could see my kids growing in front of my eyes...18 and 20 then...want to do something special for them before they move out...something they'll remember me by...something they'll never ... read more

I spent days just wandering around the streets and alleys in Lhasa and was lucky enough to be there during a religious holiday. Thousands of pilgrims from all over the Tibetan plateau visit Lhasa to pray in front of temples on September 8th. Some have to leave home in May or June to ensure a successful journey to faith. Pilgrims and vistors usually crowd religious sites, such as Jokhang Temple, Patala Palace and Ramoche Temple, where the sound of people praying and local vendors shouting fills the air. It was a quite pleasant experience to follow the crowd, to witness the devotion of the pilgrims and to feel the passion of Tibetan people. It was not my first in Tibet, but still I was obviously distracted by such an awe-inspiring city and ended up spending much ... read more

I would never forget the trip I and my cousins Nini and Dewi had back in May 2011 to Lhasa. It’s not like we had planned it for a long time, even though it’s on my high priority places to visit (perhaps, I was inspired by Brad Pitt’s movie “Seven Years in Tibet”). First of all, it was a challenge to match everyone’s schedule considering each of us worked. Thankfully, we managed to get our visa and Tibetan permit in such a short time. We left Singapore at the wee hour with China Airlines (in hindsight, we should have flown with Singapore Airlines of which economy class seats were more spacious) and arrived in Chengdu at 7 am. We had to pick our Tibet permit in Chengdu as the tour agent in Lhasa didn’t have sufficient ... read more

Tibet-- the roof of the world. For centuries this mysterious Buddhist kingdom, locked away in its mountain fastness of the Himalaya. This is a saying in China, most of people go to Tibet when they lost their job, finish school or broken out, most people go their with story, or feel lost, it’s the place most close to heaven to figure life out. url=http://api.ning.com/files/L32IyIYNgMdwQzuEk0fB3isUO*ZVcnUw50xFxxS66eaeKlBNUJLbhTdx5a2tgOQxwxazg8m6d9e32D-Ri0kzOcEGWA25h1Nr/IMG_9201.jpgimg=http://api.ning.com/files/L32IyIYNgMdwQzuEk0fB3isUO*ZVcnUw50xFxxS66eaeKlBNUJLbhTdx5a2tgOQxwxazg8m6d9e32D-Ri0kzOcEGWA25h1Nr/IMG_9201.jpg?width=750 We went there; just it close to where we were. url=http://api.ning.com/files/vhkkuu3WVfOJDGg4sDNH*Jug4wdtP4MPxRBl39QjBXj58Vik9SYQMR*5lUPVZTCQ3z66hSfDTFSkY8AO5MQazPWGleHQoNl1/IMG_9162.jpgimg=http://api.ning.com/files/vhkkuu3WVfOJDGg4sDNH*Jug4wdtP... read more

Arriving in Tibet the landscape was grey and desert-like, a mountainous version of the grey and windy concrete streets of Chengdu, from where we had flown. The airport was very rudimentary, and I half expected to see some cowboy-town drama unfold over some luggage or a taxi, but we managed to collect our belongings and make our way to Lhasa without any problems. A simple and inexpensive hotel wasn't hard to find, although a subliminal sense of blasphemy for having come to this place with no real knowledge of its religious significance settled in the back of my mind, to become manifest in various ways later on. The views from the hotel encompassed the mountains surrounding Lhasa and some gilted rooftops, along with a beautiful blue sky crossed and framed by fading prayer flags. After dumping ... read more
