If you can survive the bus journey to Songpan, then this trip is a must. A combination of the rickety old bus, narrow winding roads up the mountain and very risky driving over 9 hrs makes it a bit of a trek. Songpan itself is a cute little place with traditional buildings, city walls and gates, tiered rooves and colurful temples. There seems to be a large muslim population living there also. We stayed in an awful place called the Traffic Hotel which is part of the bus station but for 40 RMB you can't ask for much. At least we had our own room, kind of..... All the rooms are partitions so there are gaps at the top ie no privacy!! Dont think that there is any decent accomodation in the town at all. ... read more

I finally made myself leave Lhasa, somewhere I think I could have spent ages just chilling out (especially once I discovered the cappuccino shop... absolute heaven after a month of the 3-in-1 super sweet instant stuff they have in China) and arrived in Chengdu to find it hot hot hot - sooo much better than the incessant rain last time I was here! I spent just one night in Chengdu... after the small towns and remote places I'd been to in Tibet a city of 10 million was all a bit too much!! The next morning saw me up at 6am (again) for a 9 hour bus ride to Songpan in the north of Sichuan provence. The journey was long but the scenery stunning, the flat area around the city becoming green forested slopes rising steeply ... read more

I know that this update is long overdue, but there is an extenuating circumstance. About a week ago, my computer went completely haywire. I initially thought it was a software problem, but now I am pretty sure that it is a severe hardware problem, so it has been sent back to the States to see what can be done. However, that has slowed down my updating and while I'm pretty sure that I've lost all of my photos from the past few months (other than those posted here and a few sent to my mother). On the bright side, I feel quite unencumbered and free, which is making life more fun on the road. Well, on with the fun stuff. Beginning on the first of May, China begins its May-Day holiday. I was aware of the ... read more

Headed off on a 5 day horsetrekking tour up in the north western Chinese mountains, close to Tibet. We finally reached our starting point, Songpan, after a gruelling 8.5 hour bus journey in what can, at best, be described as those old yellow "Bus Scoile" buses from the Middle Ages and driving as if the four horsemen of the apocolypse were chasing us along a winding hairpin road carved into the side of the sheer mountain face. That was enough to make us saddlesore before we even SAW a horse! In addition, he insisted on leaning on the bus horn, which was at a criminally high decible level, for no apparant reason, especially when travelling through towns and there was no vehicle nor person in front of him. First day on the horses was grand, with ... read more

Now i'm starting off from an early poit since i haven't had much of opportunities to write in some time, and especially not where i now intend to start. This Monday we left The small town of Langmusi after a visit to the local monastery. Before that i must tell you (!) me and James had a fun time writing the menu for a resturant down the road. They waved at us and tried to explain their imposition...and as a reward they gave us some yak-youghurt! Later we thought we'd go back there for lunch...but it turned out to be somewhat of a mistake... There we sat waiting for 1 hour!!! Not having recieved more than one of the five dishes we had ordered. Explanation: he couldn't get the fire started! :) So we had to ... read more

We had a long 10 hour bus (averaged 26 kilometres an hour) journey to reach Songpan. The towns that we visited in that area were quite isolated and all travel between them took a long time. There are no trains or planes, only road transport. Songpan however is the gateway to one of China’s premier scenic national parks, Jutzhaigou and does have an airport nearby, but with no flights to the Tibetan grassland areas. Most of the tourists would fly in from Chengdu, the closest large city, a 10 hour bus drive further south. We arrived late in the afternoon and passed a satellite town full of dozens of hotels and restaurants. Songpan itself though was pretty. Though the main street is mostly modern and lined with shops selling Tibetan souveneirs there were no large hotels ... read more
