We had the whole day to spend at Jiuzhaigou. The pictures speak for themselves. Who could have imagined such scenery existed in China. What is not captured in the photographs are the throngs of tourists. Jiuzhaigou however, is a massive valley, and the system of regular buses shuttling visitors up and down the passes to the scenic spots is very organized. The weather was perfect. This first photo of the beautiful lake was taken over 4,000m above sea level. This photo, and the photo of the sunrise over Pingyao and the "Road to Datong" have to be my favourite photos so far on this trip. Can’t wait to see Stel and Sin’s catalogue of pictures. Jiuzhaigou was simply breathtaking even despite Spring not being the best season to visit. I might consider coming again in Autumn. ... read more

Today was a driving day so we started off with a hearty breakfast of hand-pulled noodles with black bean sauce. We had to cover 400km of mountain roads in order to get to the Jiuzhaigou Valley. It was for refreshing to not have had to climb mountains on foot since this time we drove up with the open top down, to the border between Sichuan and Tibet and a maximum height of 3,100m before heading down to our destination. As luck would have it, we only had one puncture today, in the support car. The Landcruiser is supposed to be an ultimate off-road vehicle, but with two flat tires in two days compared to the MX 5’s one, I am beginning to think that the MX 5 might just be the ultimate roadtrip car. We’ve covered ... read more

I haven't had time to proof read this, my apologies. You'll find out why at the last paragraph (dangling carrot!) So on the 9th of November i set out from UST, HK heading for Chengdu, China with three Spaniards for company. After traveling to the Philippines with three cliquey Scandinavians i had made the Spanish promise me the majority of conversation would be in English - how naive. Once again a Brit is at a significant disadvantage due to a lack of emphasis on languages back in secondary school. The story of my life. But in all seriousness they were pretty decent about it. The girls, Marta and Irene, especially made such an effort and also took a proactive interest in developing their almost fluent grasp on the English language with the introduction on youth colloquialisms ... read more

Well I made it and I have to say that every bump in the road, every time I woke up with an aching back on those hard sleeper trains it was all truly worth it. The day started for me at 5.45 after a hearty breakfast of porridge and the much needed cup of coffee I was on my merry way. Jiuzhaigou National Park is famous for its turquoise lakes and rushing waterfalls. After an exhausting day wondering the paths of the park I wearily dragged myself back to the hostel. I will keep this entry brief as I think you will agree with me the photos say so much more. These are just a few photos as i just couldn't stop taking pictures, hopefully they will give you an idea. Just to let you know ... read more

Now it wasn’t until I got into China that I actually picked up the Lonely Planet and started flicking through its 1049 pages and started to have a bit of a plan, other than to just keep heading south and lets just see what gets in the way. Now since I have started on the traveling trail the Sichuin province has become a bit of a holy grail for me, the more I read about it the more there seems to do there and I have still yet to see the China I had imagined and this area may well be it. The first of the places I had ear marked was a National Park called Jiuzhaigou, now to get there I needed to get to a town called Guangyuan on the overnight train then on ... read more

Jiuzhaigou 九寨沟 is a highlight in any trip. There are many different lakes in the area, some have beautiful reflections, some are colourful due to the rich minerals and various algae in the water, others have waterfalls flowing into them, bonsai like trees growing in them, or reeds changing the lake into a long green belt of water flowing through white reeds. Even the mountains are very colourful - there are all different shades of green trees growing in the mountains, mixed together thus weaving different patterns of green blanket on the mountains. Once the mountains and trees are reflected in still lakes, the lakes take on even more colours. I last came to Jiuzhaigou many years ago. I remember staying in a guest house inside the gate, and walking out at night to appreciate the ... read more

Thur 04 / 11 Jiuzhaigou to Chengdu Leaving Jiuzhaigou today was about the start of our homeward leg with an easy flight to Chengdu With a 06:00 wake up call ready fo a pack and go by 08:00 it was a brisk morning around 0 deg As usual, it was impossible not to have a final spend up and on cue we stopped at a 'store of a neighbour from our tour guide's village' for more bargains. Arriving at the airport at around 10:45 we awaited an 11:40 flight and within ½ hour were advised of a significant delay with buses arranged to take us to the Min Tiang Hotel. A rather interesting 'lunch' was provided and we were allocated rooms to await the delay restarted: Coincidently we were down stairs trying to access the internet ... read more

Wed 03 / 11 Jiuzhaigou Today was the day most were looking forward to. A day in the Jiuzhaigou National Park - arguable the most beautiful National Park in the World and certainly the number one park in China If heaven is beautiful then this must be heaven on earth as this was certainly a very impressively beautiful place It was a relaxing 07:00 with a breakfast and on the bus at 09:00 for a short trip in the brisk morning to the entrance of the National Park. Temperatures were around zero or below and it was layered clothing that was the order of the morning The Park entrance is at 2930 m above sea level whilst the nearly 80 km length in a Y shape reaches over 3100 m above sea level Listed by UNESCO ... read more

Firstly sorry for the big gap between the last blog and this one! I place the blame squarely with the Great Chinese Firewall which randomly blocked various websites including this one and now in Australia where wifi and internet access seem to be either absent or really expensive.  The last blog was written whilst relaxing post trek and resting weary legs. We were aware at the time of a nationwide strike called by the maoist party in Nepal in attempt to get the prime minister to resign. This was similar to the one which held us up at the end of our trek but it was an 'indefinate' strike this time. It was due to start a week before we flew to China and when we asked any of the locals how long they thought it ... read more
