This update is mostly just to get some pictures out there. We should be starting to work at the university in a few days. So, I should have some interesting things to say about our experiences with that, but for now we are just hanging out and exploring. Here, I share some photos of our exploring.... read more

For this entry I am going to keep it short. We found an apartment, and it is very nice. That is to say that it would meet most of the standards of an apartment in the United States. That might not sound like much, but I will just say that we were getting worried that we would not find such a place to live. We have electricity, gas, water, and internet set up. Well, internet was going to be set up. However, one of our student helpers got a call from the internet provider saying that it was going to take 2 weeks at least for us to get internet because our unit has "problem." So, going to a coffee shop for internet will have to be our standard for a little while. This coffee shop ... read more

We arrived in Chengdu in a somewhat more haphazard manner than we had hoped. First of all our flight from Shanghai to Chengdu delayed our boarding for about an hour and then our takeoff for another 45 minutes. Then, Dani and I were supposed to meet a student from Sichuan University at the airport to take us to our hotel on campus. However, our contact at the university was confused as to which day we were arriving because of the arrival time being 12:15am. She thought we were arriving Saturday night, but we arrived that morning technically. Eventually we were able to find a way to communicate our destination to a taxi driver. In our contract was an English and Chinese version of the university's address. So we showed a cab driver the address and he ... read more

Today we went to the Yellow Dragon River. I expected to get on a little boat and float down a huge river for a few good hours, so we packed on the bug spray. When we got there it was a completely different scene, the Yellow Dragon River is a tourist area with traditional Chinese decorations everywhere, and a beautiful manmade river in the middle of it. You can walk in or around the river and there are tons of little shops extending for at least a mile. Little kids buy water guns and shoot the people standing in the river. When we got there women came up to us with flowered head bands that EVERYONE there was wearing...so obviously we couldn't reisist buying them. We were a tourist attraction as well, at least 6 different ... read more

So we are kind of in rainy season and the ground is crazy slippery all the time. My friends actually did see a motorbike get hit by a taxi the other day! Everyone was ok but we were wondering how long it would take to witness an accident in the crazy roads here. The suprises here never really end. We went to a restaurant for a friend's birthday, and the main course was entire fish served from head to tail. Apparently the eyes are a delicacy. What was even more suprising was that there was a tank near the kitchen with fish. The same fish as on our table but in the living state... For desert we had cake, but this was no ordinary cake. There was fruit all over it, and by fruit I mean ... read more

First week of classes is done and we were asked by our program advisor to go get lost in the city. She said that we had been getting lost too much so she gave us locations in small groups to find using the busses. We found our location no problem, but when we had to meet at the restaurant that was to be our final destination we literally had no idea how to get there. We were supposed to meet at Tex Mex and there are apparently two in the same area. So I asked at least 8 different people in Chinese how to get there and we walked for miles and miles and miles trying to find it. After about an hour and a half of walking back and forth a woman took pity on ... read more

Today was the weirdest day yet. I started classes yesterday and they are hysterical. We learn a ton and being immersed in the culture makes it much easier to take in the Chinese vocab because we are constantly using it. Conveniently we are using the same book as I had at nova and they are starting from the chapter we left off at! I love my classes so far, and tai chi was the funniest thing I could possibly describe. At first the man teaching it seemed very slow and peaceful, and then all of a sudden he whipped out some crazy self defense moves that none of us were expecting. He is also going to help us all get tai chi outfits. I'm super excited and will be wearing it on the plane home. After ... read more

Today was awesome. We finally got some sleep and I woke up at 7am, which I'm sure you all know is pretty much impossible for me. I blame it on the jetlag. We got up this morning and as we left our apartment there were three women in red suits practicing tai chi with swords in the lawn outside. We had orientation in the morning and went over the schedule for our session. We are going to visit the panda reserve this weekend, but I found out it is about two hundred dollars in american money to hold a panda for thirty seconds....so I do not think I will be doing that. One of my roommates told me that there is a man who lives in the apartment next to us who trains pigeons, he literally ... read more

I'm still not really sure what day or time it is, I just know that I'm super tired. But luckily we get to sleep soon! Everyone I met is awesome, I really like the group of students that I'm with, and my roommates are great. The city is so much fun and the people are very nice. It's super busy, the driving is terrifying! The lanes are more like suggestions than regulations and pedestrians absolutely do not have the right of way. A group of students that are native to Chengdu took us out to see the city and get dinner. They were SO nice and so helpful, and literally some of the funnest people I have been around in a while. I got to try a lot of different Chinese food today, Japanese tofu, a ... read more
